Narrative in the first person: American voices.Gomberg-Borodkin, Susan Grace. January 1992 (has links)
This study develops a theoretical paradigm of narrative relations. The study posits the first-person narrator as a figure of authority within the text, a problematic figuration which implicates the text in issues of social relations and ideology with reference to questions of the narrator's empowerment. The study analyzes the first-person narrator's progressive engagement in the narrative relations of time and language as a means to assess the relative empowerment of the narrator by his narrating activity. The study argues for a Puritan legacy by which language retains its ability to empower and to enact a progression which, over time, has become a paradoxical diminishment of spiritual fulfillment. The first-person narrator thus stands as inheritor of the Puritan ministers whose status as the first American narrators confers on them an authority of origination to be acknowledged and supplanted by their successors. The form of this study seeks to unfold a progressive engagement of narrative relations, and models a movement toward a narrator fully engaged in progression, in mimicry of the Puritan doctrine of progression toward spiritual fulfillment. Using textual examples from among first-person narratives credited as the canon of American literature, the study associates characteristic narrative relations and empowerment with narrators it characterizes as impotent, including Ernest Hemingway's narrator, Jake Barnes, in The Sun Also Rises, and the unnamed narrators of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," Henry James's The Sacred Fount and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. Characteristics of bachelor narrators are exemplified by Herman Melville's narrator, Ishmael, in Moby-Dick, and by Nathaniel Hawthorne's narrator, Miles Coverdale, in The Blithedale Romance. Affiliated narrators are discussed in terms of their textual enactment by F. Scott Fitzgerald's narrator of The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway, Tennessee Williams's narrator of the reading edition of his play The Glass Menagerie, Tom Wingfield, and Walt Whitman's narrator of his poem, "Starting from Paumanock."

Flyktingars upplevelser av mötet med hälso- och sjukvården : Att inte kunna göra sin röst hörd / Refugees’ experiences in the contact with health care : To not be able to make one's voice heardOdmyr, Tobias, Olsson, Linda January 2016 (has links)
Background: More people than ever before are now seeking refuge from war and terror in other countries (UNHCR, 2016). This has as a consequence that the health care in many Western countries faces new patient categories which don’t speak the language and are culturally different from what health professionals are familiar with. Ethical considerations are important, since being misunderstood and not met with dignity or respect can cause care-related suffering. This may increase the suffering already experienced due to loss of security, family and friends. Aim: To illustrate refugees’ experiences in the contact with health care. Method: This is a literature-based, qualitative study. 15 articles were selected to investigate refugees’ experiences of health care. The analysis resulted in 2 themes, each containing 3 subthemes. Results: The main themes that emerged were: Feeling acknowledged and respected, and Overcoming language and cultural barriers. The result mainly reveals that language barriers are common, and that refugees consider it important to be seen as individuals, which is not always the case in health care. Conclusion: The challenge in caring for refugees as a nurse consists in ensuring there is a common understanding. While being aware of a patient’s history, it is also important to see the individual in a person-centered approach.

The Metaphysics of Personhood in Plato's DialoguesSheffler, Daniel T. 01 January 2017 (has links)
While most scholars know, or think they know, what Plato says about the soul, there is less certainty regarding what he says about the self. Some scholars even assert that the ancient Greeks did not possess the concepts of self or person. This dissertation sets out to examine those passages throughout Plato's dialogues that most clearly require some notion of the self or the person, and by doing so to clarify the logical lineaments of these concepts as they existed in fourth century Athens. Because Plato wrote dialogues, I restrict myself to analyzing the concepts of self and person as they appear in the mouths of various Platonic characters and refrain from speculating whether Plato himself endorses what his characters say. In spite of this restriction, I find a number of striking ideas that set the stage for further philosophical development. After an introductory chapter, in Chapters 2 and 3 I argue that the identification of the person with the soul and the identification of the human being with the composite of soul and body make possible a conceptual split between person and human being. In Chapter 4, I argue that the tripartite account of the soul suggests an ideal identification of the person with the rational aspect of the soul rather than the lower aspects of one's psychology. Finally, in Chapter 5 I argue that the analogical link between rationality in us and the rational order of the cosmos leads to the conclusion that the true self is, in some sense, divine.

This bachelor’s thesis examines the question “How can diegetic sound design be used to guide players in first-person shooters?”. This is done with theories from authors including Michel Chion, Christine Jørgensen and Karen Collins, which are then applied in two analyzes of the games “Half-Life 2” (Valve Corporation 2004) and Shadow Warrior” (Flying Wild Hog 2013) to find out which techniques they use when working with sound. We then used these techniques in our own first-person shooter, a game without any form of visual feedback, in order to performe a game test and draw our own conclusions concerning guiding sound design. The results show that it’s possible to play a game without any visual feedback, as long as the sound design follows a set of specific rules.

Development of an Intelligence Scoring System for Human Figure DrawingsHickox, Sherrie Danene 08 1900 (has links)
This research proposed developing a multivariate intelligence scoring system for human figure drawings. The 115 subjects were drawn from clinical, medical, and noninstitutionalized populations. Initially, 72 of these drawings were analyzed for detail, proportion, perspective, and overall quality. The initial factor analysis revealed two factors corresponding roughly to the WAIS Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Organization factors. DAP items evidencing high colinearity with FSIQ were retained. Two-stage regression of DAP items within subtests onto the WVAIS FSIQ using the data from all 115 subjects yielded the final model (R = 0.85, p < 0.0001). Cronbach's Alpha and mean item commonality were computed as estimates of internal consistency (0.95 to 0.999). A second factor analysis revealed six factors associated with intelligence in the DAP.

It is a very current topic considering the number of traffic accidents and due to the fact, that this is an issue was affected by the re-codification of the civil law. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one discusses development of legal regulation of the insurance of liability for injury caused by operation of a vehicle in the territory of the Czech Republic. Chapter two defines the basic terms and legal institutes related to indemnification of claims of injured persons resulting from the insurance of liability for injury caused by operation of a vehicle, which are: operation, operator, insurer, the policy holder, insured and injured person, damage and...

The Effects of Structured Team Meetings and Performance Feedback on Person-Centered Planning ActivitiesVatland, Christopher, Vatland, Christopher January 2012 (has links)
The period of transition from high school is challenging for most adolescents. There are a substantial number of life-changing decisions that transpire during this time. Choices must be made regarding career paths, continued education, future residence, and avenues for social activities and general integration in the community. Person-centered planning provides a structure for addressing these questions, with the interests and aspirations of the individual at the forefront. While much has been written about person-centered planning, there is still a sparse evidence base to support its use and no formal examination of the fidelity of implementation of these programs.
This study utilized a multiple-baseline single subject design to assess the effects of structured meetings with performance feedback on fidelity of implementation of participants' action plan steps in their person-centered plan. Analysis of the results suggests a strong functional relation between the use of structured follow-up with performance feedback and activity related to the person-centered plan action plan. Quality of life data were also gathered prior to planning and prior to and following the performance feedback intervention, with little change in the scores across the three points in time. Social validity was also assessed. The implications of these findings are discussed.
