Sistema de recomendação para bibliotecas digitais sob a perspectiva da web semântica / A recommender system to digital llibraries under semantic web perspective

Lopes, Giseli Rabello January 2007 (has links)
Currently, researchers and academics have been benefited by the expressive growth of web technologies, due to the possibility of publishing and accessing research results as soon as they are achieved. This possibility is advantageous as it minimizes the time and space barriers that traditional publications present. In this context, Digital Libraries emerged as data repositories that, beyond digital documents or links to them, store associated metadata. To allow the interoperability among different Digital Libraries, the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) was defined and, to solve the problem of metadata standardization, the Dublin Core standard (DC) was created. On the other hand, the great amount of available digital documents in the Web has caused the phenomenon known as “information overload”. In order to avoid this difficulty, Recommender Systems have been proposed and developed. These systems intend to provide an alternative interface for information filtering and retrieval technologies, focusing on the prediction of items or information parts that are interesting and useful for the user. Therefore, Recommender Systems act based on information personalization, and the predictions are generally generated using each user’s profile. The personalization is related to the way the information and the provided services can be adjusted to the specific necessities of a user or community. This dissertation describes a Recommender System for scientific articles stored in digital libraries. This system is geared towards the Computer Science scientific community. Technologically, the proposed system was developed under the Semantic Web perspective, as it explores its emergent technologies such as: use of standard metadata for document description - Dublin Core, use of the XML standard for users’ profile description - Lattes Curriculum Vitae, and services and data providers (OAI) involved on the recommendations generation process. In addition, this work presents and discusses some experimental results; the experiments are based on quantitative and qualitative evaluations of recommendations generated by the system.

Estação da Luz: desenho e realização de um painel para o saguão 2 de acesso às plataformas de trem / Estação da Luz: design and realization of a panel for the hall 2 of access to railway platforms

Maria Teresa Kerr Saraiva 04 October 2007 (has links)
The work Estação da Luz: desenho e realização de um painel para o saguão 2 de acesso às plataformas de trem (Estação da Luz: design and realization of a panel for the Hall 2 accessing to railway platform) shows the trajectory of the Estação da Luz Panel creation by its author. The 120 x 85 x 1 cm panel is composed of 14 modules. It was installed on the walls at the sides of the Hall 2 fixed ladder that connects the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) and São Paulo Metrô lines integration area and the central platform of Estação da Luz. The panel\'s goal, besides aesthetic, is to engage in an immanent relationship with Estação da Luz, beneath which it is installed. That determined the choice of oxidized iron as its raw material as a reference to the railway station material, cast iron , and of its design. The latter originated mainly from the station representative signs. Besides dialoguing with the railway station, the panel interacts with the architecture onto which it is installed, in terms of adopted proposal, ambience and local conditionings. So, the analysis of that artistic object inserts in the discussion about relationships between Art and Architecture. In the panel\'s realization, aesthetic issues also commanded the study of raw material and technique, and in this sense several essays were made.

Political communication and virality in the US presidential campaign : A CDA analysis of the 2016 US presidential candidates’ discourses and performances in late night shows

SÁNCHEZ, FRANCISCO January 2017 (has links)
The current study set out to shed light on the performances that 2016 US presidential candidates used during their interventions on the late-night comedy shows. Following the methodologies ofCritical Discourse Analysis, the aim of the thesis was to uncover and, therefore, analyze, the type of discourses that candidates used in the shows and how they combined them. There was establisheda special focus on the rhetorical styles used by each candidate, as well as the emotional content ofthe discourses, unexpected situations and comedy performances, with the aim to find the elements which lead to virality. This study reveals the rhetorical strategies used by politicians through ananalysis of the political and personal discourses they used in late-nigh comedy shows. According tothe results, the political discourse is most prevalent during the interview than the personal, which isused to start conversations and evoke personalized emotions. The study provides insights upon the elements found in politicians’ discourses on the late-night circuit that lead to achieve virality on social media.

Context-awareness for adaptive information retrieval systems

Agbele, Kehinde Kayode January 2014 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This research study investigates optimization of IRS to individual information needs in order of relevance. The research addressed development of algorithms that optimize the ranking of documents retrieved from IRS. In this thesis, we present two aspects of context-awareness in IR. Firstly, the design of context of information. The context of a query determines retrieved information relevance. Thus, executing the same query in diverse contexts often leads to diverse result rankings. Secondly, the relevant context aspects should be incorporated in a way that supports the knowledge domain representing users’ interests. In this thesis, the use of evolutionary algorithms is incorporated to improve the effectiveness of IRS. A context-based information retrieval system is developed whose retrieval effectiveness is evaluated using precision and recall metrics. The results demonstrate how to use attributes from user interaction behaviour to improve the IR effectiveness

Heard but not seen: Instructor-led video and its effect on learning.

Holder, David E. 08 1900 (has links)
Educators and instructional designers are seeking ways to increase levels of learning. One of the ways this is being done is through cognitive load theory which attempts to reduce cognitive load through a better understanding of working memory and the factors that impact its function. Past studies have found that working memory processes visual and auditory information using separate and non-sharable resources (dual coding theory) and that by properly utilizing multimedia elements, information processing in working memory is more efficient (multimedia learning). What is not known is the effect that instructor-led video, which uses the visual channel but delivers no information, has on the cognitive load of the learner. Further, will the introduction of multimedia elements make the information processing of the learner more efficient? This study examined three ways in which instructional designers may create a more efficient learning environment through a better understanding of multimedia learning. First, by using the theories of multimedia learning, I examined a more efficient use of sensory memory. By minimizing extraneous load, which communication theory calls noise, on working memory through increased utilization of the visual and auditory channels, the effectiveness of instruction was increased. Secondly, the multimedia effect, defined as using visual helps and guides with spoken and written text, was shown to assist working memory in processing new information into existing schema. Last, by using the personalization principle set forth by Clark and Mayer (2008), I used both the video feed and multimedia together to foster a more social or conversational presentation to the learner.

Uma arquitetura de personalização de conteúdo baseada em anotações do usuário / An architecture for content personalization based on peer-level annotations

Marcelo Garcia Manzato 14 February 2011 (has links)
The extraction of semantic information from digital video is important to be used on personalization services because the content is adapted according to each users preferences. However, although it is possible to find several approaches in the literature, automatic indexing techniques are able to generate semantic metadata only when the contents domain is restricted. Alternatively, this information can be created manually by professionals, but this activity is time-consuming and error-prone. A possible solution would be to explore collaborative users annotations, but such approach has the disadvantage of lacking the individuality of annotations, hampering the extraction of users preferences from the interaction. This work has the objective of proposing a generic personalization architecture that allows multimedia indexing procedures to be accomplished in a cheap and unrestricted way. Such architecture uses collaborative annotations, but keeps the individuality of the data in order to augment the users profile with relevant concepts. The multimodality of metadata and users preferences is also explored in this work, which provides robustness during the extraction of semantic information, bringing benefits to applications. This work also presents two personalization services that explore the proposed architecture, along with evaluations that compare the obtained results with previously proposed approaches

Personalização e adaptação de conteúdo baseadas em contexto para TV Interativa / Context-based content personalization and adaptation for Interactive TV

Rudinei Goularte 10 November 2003 (has links)
The work presented in this thesis developed techniques with context-awareness support, based on the MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 standards, in order to personalize and to adapt Interactive TV content. One of the challenges in this area is the development of personalized programs with rich multimedia content, high interactivity and accessibility through a variety of devices (mobile and non-mobile). Most part of the problem is that the approaches found in literature do not provide context support, do not allow separation between programs and objects descriptions and have low level of segmentation granularity. These features make difficult or impossible, in some cases, the development of Interactive TV applications. The techniques developed in this work are based on MPEG-7 compliant schemes and on programs segmentation into MPEG-4 objects. The schemes are used to describe structure, composition and semantics of programs and component objects. An infra-structure to creation, delivery and consumption of Interactive TV programs was also defined. The joint utilization of infra-structure and techniques allows for the development of Interactive TV advanced applications. As an example of these applications, this work developed an automatic Interactive TV personalization and adaptation service. This service allows a user to access, on-demand, a program specially designed to match his interests and allowing content access through devices with mobile and non-mobile features.

A Recommendation system for News Push Notifications- Personalizing with a User-based and Content-based Recommendation system

Wiklund, Ida January 2020 (has links)
The news landscape has changed during recent years because of the digitization. News can nowadays be found in both newspapers and on different sites online. The availability of the digital newspapers leads to competition among the news companies. To make the users stay on one specific platform for news, relevance is required in the content and oneway of creating relevance is through personalization, to tailor the content to each user. The focus of this thesis is therefore personalizing newspush notifications for a digital  newspaper and making them more relevant for users. The project was made in cooperation with VK Media, and their digital newspaper. The task in this thesis is to implement personalization of push notifications by building a recommendation system and to test the implemented system with data from VK. In order to perform the task, a dataset representing reading habits of VK’s users was extracted from their data warehouse. Then a user-based and content-based recommendation system was implemented in Python. The idea with the system is to recommend new articles that are sufficiently similar to one or more of the already read articles. Articles that may be liked by one of the most similar users should also be recommended. Finally, the system’s performance was evaluated with the data representing reading habits for VK’s users. The results show that the implemented system has better performance than the current solution without any personalization, when recommending a few articles to each user. The results from the evaluation also show that the more articles the users have read, the better predictions are possible to make. Thus, this thesis offers a first step towards meeting the expectations of more relevant content among VK’s users.

Caractérisation du sous-marinage chez l'occupant de véhicule en choc frontal / Investigation of car occupants submarining in frontal impacts

Luet, Carole 27 September 2013 (has links)
Submarining occurs in frontal crashes when the lap belt slides over the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and is the principal cause of AIS 3+ abdominal injuries. Submarining is the consequence of the pelvis kinematics relative to the lap belt, driven by the equilibrium of forces and moments applied to the pelvis. The four main components playing a role in the pelvis kinematics are the lumbar spine, the hips, the seat pan and the lap belt. The purpose is to characterize the population behavior regarding submarining. This requires to identify individual parameters having an effect on submarining and to examine their distribution among the population. A nine post-mortem human subject (PMHS) sled test campaign was carried out on a simplified environment. Three test configurations were defined. Each configuration was realized on three PMHS. The test results were used as reference data for a human finite element model validation. The model was improved to better fit the PMHS corridor responses and then personalized regarding the geometry, the mass distribution and the lumbar spine behavior to obtain nine models matching each PMHS. The personalized models responses were consistent with the PMHS ones. Finally, the human model was used in a numerical study. The numerical study was aimed at deepen the understanding of the pelvis kinematics on the one hand, and investigate the influence of several individual parameters on submarining on the other hand. The mass distribution, the lumbar spine stiffness and the initial pelvis orientation have revealed an influence on the submarining observation. The iliac wing angle, the position of the ASIS relative to the H-point, the iliac notch depth and the thickness of the soft tissues between the pelvis and the lap belt were also identified to have an effect on submarining.
