The Logic of Imagination in ArchitectureReed, Amanda 16 December 2010 (has links)
Spaces are determined not only by their physical qualities, but also by the narratives created during their occupation. These persistent yet ephemeral stories infuse our experience of space with meaning and can be the vehicle through which we consciously express our world view and explore our evolving identity. In architecture, the immaterial is explained as a ‘genius loci’, a spirit tied to a physical space that gives it a specific character and allows for deep connection and identification to occur. Through an exploration of metaphors that have traditionally conveyed the presence of immaterial forces, this thesis reveals how the relationship between psyche and space is embedded in a logic of the imagination; interpreting the experience of space in a language of light and shadow.
Additionally this thesis examines how spaces are transformed through the psychological process of mental projection and explores how associations that are deeply rooted in the collective unconscious affect the inner world of the individual. Architecture is therefore seen not as a practice that is psychologically neutral but one that is filled with rich emotional content. To build, constitutes a way to bring order, to set boundaries, to transform the apparent chaos of the world into a comprehendible form. This thesis investigates how the experience of inhabiting can be a catalyst for the imagination to project layers of memory, myth and symbolism onto a location, thereby facilitating the translation of space into place. For Architects the conscious incorporation and evocation of the immaterial is seen as a vital and necessary process that can uniquely contribute to the ensouling of architecture, and the creation of meaningful places.

Fratura psÃquica: o impacto da violÃncia no psiquismo das crianÃas da favela / Fracture psychic: the impact of violence in the psyche of the children of the slumSabrina Serra Matos 07 January 2002 (has links)
The critical situation in which the greater part of the capital of CearÃ‟s children live â subject to every form of violence â homelessness, precarious educations, child labor, sexual abuse, prostitution, alcoholism, drug abuse, unemployed parents, constitute in one of the most consistent expressions, a dying society. This qualitative investigation aims at understanding the impact of violence upon the psyche of children subjected to it from an early age in a socioeconomic environment of poverty. Twenty-seven subjects from 5 to 12 years of age, of both sexes, residents of Verdes Mares (Green Seas) slum, located in an area east of the city of Fortaleza, participated in the study. From a clinical point of view, aided by one the techniques of content analysis â thematic analysis, where open interviews, games, theatrical enactment as well as projective techniques (drawings) were conducted, and through which significant latent aspects emerged concerning the children‟s psychic structuring. These aspects confirmed the initial hypothesis that these children‟s psyches are being disharmoniously structured and that a âpsychic fratureâ might result, an expression that signals a misstep in the noetic and affective areas of development.

Enclosure, Transformation, Emergence: Space And The Construction Of Gender Roles In The Novels Of Charlotte BrontëLattanzio, Michelle Dawn 23 March 2010 (has links)
I am interested in the construction and meaning of space in Charlotte Brontë 's novels, and more specifically the idea of enclosure, in abstract and concrete terms. In a concrete sense, I wish to investigate the physical spaces the women in Charlotte Brontë 's novels inhabit: their homes, gardens, workplaces, clothing, and their bodies. In an abstract sense, I wish to investigate the cultural, psychic, gender, and linguistic spaces they inhabit: the cultural images and conventions women are enclosed within, the psychic space of the mind, and the narrative spaces they inhabit (and create).
Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, in their seminal text The Madwoman in the Attic, focus on the patriarchal enclosure of female characters in Victorian texts. As many Feminist critics of nineteenth century literature have noted (Vicinus, Agress, Auerbach), these enclosures are largely controlled by the patriarchy. Indeed, the protagonists of Charlotte Brontë's novels reflect the entrapment of the feminine protagonists in a patriarchal world.
However, focus on this entrapment obscures the power that characters like Lucy Snowe, Jane Eyre, Shirley Keeldar, and Caroline Helstone generate from their enclosure experience. Each enclosure these three characters experiences fuels their education. Lucy, Jane, Shirley, and Caroline generate power and transformation of self from their time spent in these various enclosures. The education of these characters becomes the education for real women. In order to reclaim and reaffirm the value of enclosure for women, one may trace the positive notions of enclosure through the Jungian model of a three-stage gestation of women's rites of passage: enclosure, transformation, and emergence, as proposed by Bruce Lincoln. This gestational process results in psychological and spiritual transformation.
All four protagonists participate in many cycles of the gestational pattern on micro and macro levels. This process results in their eventual transformation and emergence as wise women. It is vital to re-interpret the psychic and physical enclosures within Villette, Shirley and Jane Eyre as spaces that shape the identity of Lucy Snowe, Caroline Helstone, Shirley Keeldar, and Jane Eyre.

Etude des phénomènes groupaux en tant qu’amplification de l’inconscient selon un modèle quantique / Study of group phenomena as unconscious amplification in a quantum modelGalli Carminati, Giuliana 18 May 2016 (has links)
Mots clés : Dynamique de Groupe, Amplification de l'Inconscient, Model Quantique, Entropie / Group phenomena have been used since antiquity in therapeutic, social, economic and political domains. According to Bion, the interactions between group members generate a “group unconscious” and its behaviour is governed and oriented by Bion's “basic assumptions.” The present work has been conducted during group analysis training at the Basque Foundation for the Investigation of Mental Health (OMIE) at Bilbao, consisting of eleven sessions. The participants are presented with an “absurd questionnaire” proposing 50 pairs of images, in each of which one image has to be chosen. The results are used to search through an unconscious amplification for evidence in favour of the influence of group dynamics on individual choices of the images proposed in the questionnaire. Our analysis finds some significant evidence for an effect of group dynamics both on the initial choice of the pictures and on the evolution of the number of changes (swaps) of picture choices across the eleven sessions. We find also some relations between the orientation of the answers in the groups as results of Multiple Variable Analysis and calculation of the distribution of Bernoulli's Entropy. We interpret these correlations as group effects in the light of Bion's view of group dynamics, which postulates an immediate onset of a group unconscious and its evolution during the group activity. Keywords: Group Dynamics, Unconscious Amplification, Quantic Model, Entropy
