The Noble Brothers and Early Public Improvements in Indiana

Amos, Ruth Esther 01 January 1945 (has links)
The years from 1810 to 1840 deal with one of the most decisive periods in Indiana's history, first as a territory and later as a state. Few periods have seen greater political and material development. During these years great problems, such as the organization of the state government, the disposition of the public lands by the Federal government, and the construction of internal improvements by the national and state governments, had to be solved by those who bore the responsibilities of public office. Great national political movements were in the making. These matured into powerful forces, shaping not only national policies but reaching down and influencing state political and economic alignments and policies. Among the names of families who guided the political affairs of Indiana at the beginning of statehood, none is more prominent than that of Noble. Two Noble brothers, James and Noah, rose to the highest possible positions within the commonwealth. James served as one of the first two United States senators from Indiana, and he continued a member of that body fifteen years,- until his death in 1831. Noah, the younger brother, was elected the fifth Governor of the state in 1831. The third brother, Lazarus, held the Office of Receiver of Public Moneys in the Brookville Land Office. He died at an early age.

Manipulated Museum History and Silenced Memories of Aggression: Historical Revisionism and Japanese Government Censorship of Peace Museums

Birdwhistell, Benjamin P 19 May 2017 (has links)
The Japanese government has a vested interest in either avoiding discussion of its war-torn past or arguing for a revisionist take. The need to play up Japanese victimization over Japanese aggression during World War II has led to many museums having their exhibits censored or revised to fit this narrative goal. During the 1990’s, Japan’s national discourse was more open to discussions of war crimes and the damage caused by their aggression. This in turn led to the creation of many “peace museums” that are intended to discuss and confront this history as frankly as possible. At the beginning of the 21st century, public discourse turned against these museums and only private museums have avoided censorship. Some museums, like the Osaka International Peace Center, have been devastated by the censorship. This museum and other museums with similar narrative issues raise questions about appropriate narrative on display. What is appropriate to censor for the sake of respect for the dead? What must be included for the sake of historical accuracy and honesty about the past? These questions are investigated at four different peace museums throughout Japan.

From Containing Communism to Fighting Floods: The Louisiana Army National Guard in the Cold War, 1946-1965

Breerwood, Rhett G 18 December 2015 (has links)
In the decades following World War II, the Louisiana National Guard evolved due to world, national, and local events. In response to the United States’ Cold War policies to contain Communism, the Guard expanded, professionalized, and was occasionally called to federal service. In conjunction with Cold War fears of external attack and internal subversion, a civil defense mission brought coordination between federal, state and local response agencies. Despite the lack of large scale war service or an attack on the U.S. homeland , the skills and responsibilities acquired by the Louisiana Guard during this time period resulted in an enhanced ability to respond to Louisiana’s biggest practical threat, i.e. natural disasters.

Fighting Spirit: A History of St. Henry's Catholic Church New Orleans 1871-1929

Green, Alvah J., III 18 December 2015 (has links)
In 2009, the Archdiocese of New Orleans went through a reorganization that resulted in the closure of numerous parishes under its direction. This thesis will look at how one of the parishes closed during this reorganization, St. Henry’s, had already faced, and survived, numerous attempts at closure. A study of these previous attempts reveals that internal church politics were often on display and the driving force behind the decisions. Using documents from the Archdiocesan Archives of New Orleans, this thesis looks at the history and leadership of St. Henry’s parish, and examines how the survival of a church often has more to do with the personalities of those in leadership positions and less to do with the propagation of faith.

La Poste et les transports : la messagerie et l’apprentissage de la concurrence (1969-2003) / The french post office and transport : mail system and postal packages or the competition learning (1969-2003)

Henri, Camille 11 September 2014 (has links)
This analysis reveals the considerable change inside La Poste across the years: the evolution of the shipment, the expertise and especially the way how they improve their business because of their competitors. All this lead them to develop their business in the messaging field and to restructure the way of packaging inside La Poste Group. This study reveals that their business has grown considerably over the years and that shipment research has contributed to give them the knowledge inside the company. One of the assumptions of this thesis considers that the historical approach has lead the group to improve their way of shipment and to develop a change strategy : it's the reorganisation inside the group, the internal restructuring of the shipment and messaging, and also the new definition of a relationship between this exceptional way of shipment and the whole world. The aim challenge of the operator is to be able to develop the business of the company trying to have a pole position on the market and insure a public service. This thesis also reveals that one of the major issues of la Poste by the past, was to develop their business and to be identified as one of the leader in this section. This fundamental change linked to the expansion of the shipment messaging, make us consider that the influence of the shipment experience and the competitors postal service had contributed to define the knowledge of the firm, we consider it as a major step for la Poste and allow us to get more curious on the competitor's learning since the late 1970s

A History of Education in Pulaski County

Anderson, Savannah 01 August 1946 (has links)
The present educational status of Pulaski County has evolved through more than a century of slow progress. The causes back of the goals gained, whether they be natural consequences as in "the winning of the west," or the result of a brilliant stroke of genius on the part of some indomitable leadership, it is not the purpose of this study to determine. The purpose may be stated thus: (1) To preserve some rare materials in peril of passing into oblivion, such as primitive reports, given by the first trustees, pioneers of the primeval districts; the first notice issued by the commissioners to hold an election; a certificate nearly a century old, and some interesting material found in newspapers; and some verbal accounts. (2) To list and give the date of every commissioner and superintendent who has served as the head of the educational system of the county. (3) To make a record of the epistolary reports of the county superintendents of the different years, since they shed much light on the educational problems of their time. Since the geography of a country has much to do with the economical and social life of a people, and since all are factors in an educational program, the geographical features of the county have been included. An account of the historical background has seemed pertinent to an understanding of the peoples. The Academy Lands have been the most obscure chapter of this work. So far no source material in the form of records is available on the Somerset Academy. So far as known, there has been no written history of education in Pulaski County. The only things that approach it are some articles written by members of the D.A.R., by the Chautauqua Clubs, and by Enos Swain. A brief account of Pulaski County is given in Collins's History. Use has been made of some of this material. Clarice Payne Ramey has written a history of the county, but the writer has not had access to it.

The Development of the English Curriculum at Western Kentucky State Teachers College

Hall, Dorthie 01 August 1943 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to trace the development of the English curriculum and its related activities at the Western Kentucky State Teachers College. This development is not the product of the years 1906-1943 exclusively, during which time Western Kentucky State Teachers College has been a chartered stated institution, because the school that became Western Kentucky Normal School in 1906 had been growing for some thirty years.

The 1938 Kentucky Senate Election: Alben Barkley, the New Deal & the Defeat of Governor A.B. "Happy" Chandler

Hixson, Walter 01 July 1981 (has links)
Analysis showed that the 1938 Kentucky State primary became the focal point of a national political struggle over the New Deal. The Kentucky campaign was the most significant of the mid-term elections which represented a major test of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's political strength. Senate Majority Leader Alben W. Barkley gave unwavering support to Roosevelt and the New Deal while his opponent, Kentucky Governor Albert B. Chandler, represented conservative Democrats who sought to wrest control of the party from Roosevelt. The clash of two powerful Kentucky politicians and the widespread use of federal and state patronage distinguished the campaign. Barkley's victory is attributed to his political skills and the enduring popularity of the New Deal.
