Harlemites' Preconceptions of Unmet Human Needs and TheLoss of Harlem Culture: A Quantitative Study of The Causes of Conflict and Gentrification

Banks, Arnold John 01 January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the process of forced eviction (i.e., gentrification) and its influence on Harlem culture. The study quantifies four (4) significant factors involved in the influencing of a paradigm shift. The study explicitly examines the historical and traditional cultures of Harlemites' when framed in the theoretical context of unmet human needs. In this study, unmet human needs in association with theoretical constructs have demonstrated strong correlations in relation to altering attitudes that affect complex thought and human behavior. This study reports the empirical results and the investigated associations of theoretical constructs as they pertain to the various hypotheses outlined in this dissertation. Analytical measurements used in this study include both descriptive and inferential statistics. The sample population was 300 and six (6) statistical tools are used to examine and analyze the data. This study will show that correlations and regression results suggest unmet human needs shape the observation on the preconceptions of culture and the findings are conclusive. Psychological characteristics moderately influence culture and congruent with Maslow's and Burton's human needs theories. The researcher postulates that the theoretical models used in the study and working hypotheses in this exposition can be used in guiding impending research.

The Impact of Digitalization on Student Academic Performance in Higher Education : Investigating the change in academic performance of university level students after a sudden switch to digital education due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Case of Jönköping International Business School.

Halilić, Meliha, Tinjić, Dina January 2020 (has links)
As in any other sector, the Covid-19 outbreak has caused many changes in education, and there is a reasonable expectation for this intervention to have a significant impact on the students and their performance. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of the digital semester, imposed on students due to Covid-19 outbreak, on student academic success. Using a quasi-experimental methodological approach called dif-in-dif analysis, three empirical models were constructed to analyse if there is an overall effect when comparing our control and treatment groups, as well as if there were any group-specific differences when it comes to the performance across genders and educational levels. The study found a significant negative effect of the digital semester on student academic success, suggesting that students performed significantly worse after the Covid-19 outbreak caused the University to step away from face-to-face teaching and adapt to remote studies. Furthermore, it was found that gender-specific differences do not affect the academic performance of our treatment group; however, female students performed worse when the digital semester was implemented compared to the control group who had both the classes and exams face-to-face. Lastly, Master students were found to perform significantly worse compared to Bachelor students’ when the Covid-19 outbreak caused the education to transfer to the digital environment.

Social media usage and body appreciation : A quantitative cross-sectional study among Swedish adults

Karlsson, Greta January 2020 (has links)
Among Swedish adults, 50% are active on social media daily. Regarding body image, 50% of Swedish adolescents are happy with their weight, although no statistics are available among Swedish adults. Time spent on social media is related to body dissatisfaction, and viewing of body positive content increases body appreciation. Applying a salutogenic approach, a theoretical framework of sense of coherence was used in this study. The aim was to examine: if there is a relationship between social media usage and body appreciation in Swedish adults; if there are gender differences; whether this potential relationship is evident after controlling for age, gender, physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, and viewing of body positive content. A quantitative method was used. Data from 153 participants was collected using questionnaires, and analysed using correlation analyses and multiple regression analyses. The results revealed that there was no relationship between general social media usage and body appreciation – however, the less time spent on social media, the better body appreciation participants had. This relationship was only evident among women. The relationship was still observed after controlling for confounding. These findings were in line with some previous findings. Women’s body appreciation could possibly favour from decreased time spent on social media.

Managerial factors associated with hospital performance in Vhembe District, Limpopo Province

Greyling, Donna May 19 July 2020 (has links)
MPH / Department of Public Health / This study was aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding into the managerial factors that are associated with hospital performance. Out of all the contributing factors, managerial factors have the greatest impact on hospital performance. In South Africa, despite the availability of policies and guidelines and adequate funding, hospital performance is still poor. This study investigates the different aspects of managerial performance, looking specifically at organisational factors such as organisational culture, available resources, and performance monitoring methods; as well as personal factors of the managers; namely, their focus on quality, and personal leadership styles and skills. The study is a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey, utilising questionnaires distributed at the two largest district hospitals in Vhembe District. The study was aimed at a total population sample of managers, doctors and professional nurses in the two hospitals. The study highlighted areas of management in the two hospitals studied that were commendable, as well as those needing urgent attention. There was a statistically significant association between managerial factors associated with hospital performance, and better perceptions of hospital performance. In particular, leadership skills such as motivation and dedication, methodical and logical management styles, and a hands-on approach had a significant contribution to perceptions of hospital performance. The study also highlighted the importance of good communication between senior management and subordinates. / NRF

Social Determinants of Health Inequality and Life Expectancy Among Women of Edo State, Nigeria

Odekina, Daniel Aromeh 01 January 2015 (has links)
Health inequality conflates a huge number of economic, social, and political issues. These issues, together described as social determinants, determine a population's health through influencing health status and life expectancy. The research purpose of this study was to examine how social determinants affected the life expectancy of the women of Edo State, based on secondary data from Nigeria's 2008 demographic and health survey (NDHS). The theories that guided the study were self-efficacy beliefs of the social cognitive theory and physical self-concept of the health belief model. This quantitative cross-sectional study examined the associations between socioeconomic status, nutritional status, literacy/educational attainment, access to household sanitation facilities, and life expectancy. The dependent variables were health status and life expectancy (assessed using parity and age at first delivery). The independent variables were employment, ability to read and write, listening to the radio, type of place of residence, and persons responsible for reproductive health decisions. The analysis was based on data from 950 completed face-to-face interviews in the 2008 NDHS covering 846 households in Edo State selected using a stratified 2-stage cluster sampling design. Regression analyses showed that listening to the radio, persons responsible for decisions on reproductive health issues, employment, and type of place of residence had significant positive effects on parity and age at first delivery. Employment was the best predictor of both dependent variables. Ability to read and write had a negative relationship with the age at first delivery. The social change implications include the attainment of longer lives in Edo State, Nigeria, through effective policies on employment and education.

Lewerenz, Rico 23 October 2018 (has links)
