Hvalgren, Alexandra January 2011 (has links)
This essay examines the relationships between the different elements in Lisa Jonasson’s collage Existentiell Progg #6 and her very detailed technique. The essay has as its aims to understand and analyze both the details and the wholeness of the artwork and to try to put the collage in an art historical context. The thesis finds that Existentiell Progg #6 has a connection to the imagery of Africa and other collage artist such as Hannah Höch and Nancy Spero, which also gives the paper a perspective of feminism in the arts. The paper continues to create an understanding for the collage work by putting it in to Theodor Adorno’s theories about nature, the human being and the animal kingdom. The paper then comes to the conclusion that many of the elements in Existentiell Progg #6 are a part of its underlying meaning and purpose.

Examing the Nonroutine Acts of Emergency Workers and How They Become Routine

McDonald, Camille M. 2010 August 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine how nonroutine acts performed by iii trained emergency workers developed into routine emergency acts and skills. I will be specifically looking for concepts that are common throughout the different types of emergency workers that will be interviewed. The data is gathered from focus groups that were recruited from classes on campus. In particular the results depict some very common techniques used in training that allowed the workers to feel confident about their role in emergencies. These tended to include repetition of "classroom training, "but more importantly from the viewpoint of the workers, repetition of simulated emergencies. The development of autonomy in decision making was an important facet for workers whose work "territory" was varied; however, autonomy was rarely stressed for those in relatively constant surroundings such as pools. Several commonalities were found throughout each field. These included interruptions, self-efficacy, the use of judgment and tacit knowledge. Many of the participants also expressed the same sentiment towards their feelings of the training and its efficiency. Some research will also show attempts to change policy and training within emergency workers in order to improve job performance and enhance the safety of the public as well. I will include a small statistical appendix that looks at the satisfaction level of evacuees who fled to Houston, Texas when Hurricane Katrina hit. Five specific factors were examined and regressed to determine satisfaction levels. Only two factors showed any type of significance. As the discussion will indicate, certain previous factors, before the hurricane hit, are believed to be the cause of these particular results.

Heiding, Caroline, Kraft, Anna January 2015 (has links)

Petersen, Lucille Jacoba January 2010 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to investigate parents&rsquo / and educators&rsquo / perceptions of factors influencing high rate of academic failure of learners in Clarke Estate primary schools. A quantitative, descriptive study design was used in this study. A descriptive study is used to gain information about characteristics within a particular field of study. The instrument used was a research questionnaire as it is a quick and cheap instrument to obtain a lot of information covering a large area within a relatively short time. The study population was confined to two schools in Clarke Estate. The participants were randomly selected. The sample from the two selected schools comprised twenty educators and two hundred parents. The sample was heterogeneous, comprising both male and female.

Parodie et construction identitaire

Ategomo Ymele, Martial 23 April 2012 (has links)

Messengers and the art of reported speech in the Iliad

Hutcheson, Laurie Glenn 13 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on an aspect of the Iliad that at first might seem particularly formulaic, archaic, and, since Parry, characteristic of orality. When reporting messages, characters frequently repeat large portions of their messages verbatim. In contrast to other speakers, who reveal themselves through speech, messengers are supposedly constrained to repeat the messages that have been dictated to them. The Iliadic messenger has even been described as a “tape recorder” (Létoublon), or a voice “uniquely marked as ‘transparent’” (Barrett). Messengers in the Iliad have been thought to be defined and limited by the convention of verbatim repetition. Despite this prevailing view, I demonstrate, in example after example, the flexibility and expressiveness of messengers in the Iliad. The motif of messages draws attention to the choices messengers make, highlighting their emphases, omissions, and priorities. In diverging from their models and contextualizing their reports, messengers mediate and interpret their messages. These reports point to the poem’s concern with the dynamics of effective (or failed) communication. The Iliad dramatizes communication through messages, e.g., between Zeus and mortals, between the men on the battlefield and women in the city, between intimate conversations and public representations, between an isolated warrior and his community. Beginning with professional messengers, I show how heralds tailor their messages to their audiences, sometimes providing a buffer between kings and others (chapter 1). Iris, the divine messenger, uses a wide variety of approaches, demonstrating that a “faithful” report requires sensitive adaptation. Her interactions offer windows into the characters she addresses (chapter 2). Turning to major characters, I show how Hektor and Priam reveal themselves: Hektor projects a heroic image of Paris and himself, while representing less heroic, private speeches; Priam shows his doubts about divine communication and asserts his own desires (chapter 3). Thetis re-orients the directives she brings, adapting them to her relationships and priorities, thereby revealing divine and human perspectives (chapter 4). Finally, Odysseus and Patroklos are unsuccessful messengers, who both omit great portions of the speeches they report in their efforts to persuade Achilles, and who both fall short of their commissioners’ hopes for their messages (chapter 5). / 2020-11-13T00:00:00Z

Investigating neural correlates of stimulus repetition using fMRI

Abdulrahman, Hunar January 2018 (has links)
Examining the effect of repeating stimuli on brain activity is important for theories of perception, learning and memory. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive way to examine repetition-related effects in the human brain. However the Blood-Oxygenation Level-Dependent (BOLD) signal measured by fMRI is far removed from the electrical activity recorded from single cells in animal studies of repetition effects. Despite that, there have been many claims about the neural mechanisms associated with fMRI repetition effects. However, none of these claims has adequately considered the temporal and spatial resolution limitations of fMRI. In this thesis, I tackle these limitations by combining simulations and modelling in order to infer repetition-related changes at the neural level. I start by considering temporal limitations in terms of the various types of general linear model (GLM) that have used to deconvolve single-trial BOLD estimates. Through simulations, I demonstrate that different GLMs are best depending on the relative size of trial-variance versus scan-variance, and the coherence of those variabilities across voxels. To address the spatial limitations, I identify six univariate and multivariate properties of repetition effects measured by event-related fMRI in regions of interest (ROI), including how repetition affects the ability to classify two classes of stimuli. To link these properties to underlying neural mechanisms, I create twelve models, inspired by single-cell studies. Using a grid search across model parameters, I find that only one model (“local scaling”) can account for all six fMRI properties simultaneously. I then validate this result on an independent dataset that involves a different stimulus set, protocol and ROI. Finally, I investigate classification of initial versus repeated presentations, regardless of the stimulus class. This work provides a better understanding of the neural correlates of stimulus repetition effects, as well as illustrating the importance of formal modelling.
