Petersson, Cedrik January 2015 (has links)
In this work, you get drawn into a different and distant world than the one we are usedto. You get to know what shamanism is, in a basic and understandable way, easy to lookupon for a newcomer to this gigantic subject. The world of raging spirits and meddlingshamans with the belief of three worlds where spirits roam will be compared toreligions that we might know better, with big focus on the Aesir Faith. Oden and otherwell-known characters from this belief are in a historical way looked upon and relatedto beliefs, storys and findings. The archaic belief of the humans are intriguing and exciting, and I hope you find outthat yourself, when you dig in to this essay

Boundaries of the soul : the mythic imagination, place and shamanic consciousness in literary form

Hartley, William, University of Western Sydney, College of Arts January 2008 (has links)
In the Western cultural tradition there is a particular aspect of consciousness discernable in certain fictive literature; mythopoeic literary consciousness (MLC), the evolution of which may be traced back to its earliest manifestation in the cave paintings of the Upper Palaeolithic period in Europe. Researchers agree that those cave paintings are indicative of shamanic activity, which suggests an interesting relationship between shamanic consciousness and MLC. This research investigates contemporary experiences of this relationship in the context of place and the Imaginal Realm using a combination of empirical and textual methods. The evolution of the narrative psyche is described; beginning with recent interpretations of the aetiology and meaning of the European Upper Palaeolithic cave paintings. Shamanism is then examined and linkages are made with subsequent esoteric traditions such as Gnosticism, Hermeticism, the Imaginal Realm of the Sufi mystics, and the Romantic Movement in European literature. The Imaginal Realm, as a metaphysical construct, is posited in relationship to de Chardin’s Noosphere, Sheldrake’s Morphic Resonance, the Celtic Web of Wyrd and Jung’s Collective Unconscious. Empirical research is presented on contemporary expressions of this tradition. Three internationally recognised Australian authors, David Malouf, Thomas Keneally and Colleen McCullough, were either interviewed or completed a questionnaire on their backgrounds, the role of place relationships, states of consciousness when writing and reading, the role of literature and related questions. Five dedicated readers and two professionally credentialed practicing shamans completed similar questionnaires on their experiences and views on literature, the act of reading, and shamanic and creative consciousness. The responses are accompanied by textual analysis of the work of the three authors, drawing out themes of importance. Further discussion of the empirical and textual material in the context of broader literature establishes the epistemological dimensions of both mythopoeic literary consciousness and shamanic consciousness. The nature and relationship of consciousness and soul are examined from a perspective that unites them with the anima mundi and posits them in relationship with place and elsewhere-place. The concluding section revisits core themes to posit the mythopoeic writer and MLC within the heritage of a metaphysical tradition that delineates the existential boundaries of the psyche. It is argued that MLC is a manifestation of the narrative imperative of the psyche or soul to orientate itself along a place-elsewhere-place continuum, a continuum that parallels states of consciousness from the participation mystique to the de-centred self. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Voices of the « masters » et bird songs : Pragmatic study of the acoustic universe and the ritual communication among the Quechua of the Peruvian Amazon

Gutierrez, Andrea-Luz 05 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis aims at describing the use of the voice in ordinary an ritual interactions among the Quechua of the Peruvian Amazon (Pastaza), and the role devoted to communication in the transmission of animism. How do the Quechua represent the use of the voice ? Who talks ? This thesis examines the role of acoustic imagination in the quechua conceptualization of language and communication but also in the practice and representation of hunting and sickness among the Quechua of Amazonia. The use of « acoustic sound mask » and « quoted voice » mechanisms play a key role in the attribution of an « agency » to non human entities. Sound imitation appears as an effective perceptive and cognitive strategy, heavily used in the context of learning animistic representations. A close attention is paid to the various modalities of ritual communication through different styles of discourse, particularly in lyrical, therapeutical and cynegetical songs. Adopting a pragmatic perspective, the author describes the learning context of ritual knowledge and pays close attention to the embedding of spirit voices in ritual discourse. A linguistic analysis, sensitive to the discursive variations, shows that this technique of quotation of a non-human voice, observed during the transmission of ritual songs, has a remarkable echo in its own poetic structure. Through the study of these enunciative devices, the author demonstrates that the indexical use of sound symbolism plays a key role in the performance achieved, allowing the hunter-shaman to lend his voice to the spirits invoked. This study could open new perspectives for research on Amerindian ritual discourses.

Formighieri Giordani, Rubia 18 June 2012 (has links)
In the course of a study of evolving eating habits, this dissertation focuses on both changes and continuing trends among the Guarani who currently live in the indigenous territory of Itamaran, in the district of Diamante d’Oeste (State of Paraná, Brazil). By means of an ethnographic study, we have attempted to grasp the structures of Guarani eating patterns, from food production to food transformation, leading to an eating event. This work highlights the fundamental connections between the group’s specific sociology of food and their cosmology, the importance of kinship and affinity for production and consumption of food, as well as the related theories of body transformation induced by food ingestion, a key feature of the human condition as it relates to alterity.

Tra cattolici e protestanti maya. Het’z mek’, iniziazioni e conversioni in un villaggio dello Yucatán (Messico) / Entre mayas catholiques et protestants. Het'z mek’, initiations et conversions dans un village en Yucatan (Mexique) / Between catholic and protestant mayas. Het'z mek ', initiations and conversions in a village in Yucatan (Mexico)

Ghezzi, Andrea 15 February 2011 (has links)
In a Yucatan village, the main population has recently converted to Protestantism. This situation brought to a redefinition of some elements of local culture and its practical rituals . This process of redefinition, which is realized partly by rejecting the cultural system, practices and rituals of the Catholic organization, and, partly, by a selective manteinance and a reshaping of some of its terms. The het'z mek ', a ritual "traditional" practice, is also celebrated by Protestants on the basis of the emphasis on its functionality over the physical body associated with an "orthopedic" intervention. The shaman's initiation path is rather strongly contrasted by the use of the rhetoric of conversions tale to Protestantism.
