This paper proposes to investigate the effect of incorporation of waste, as the sludge from wastewater treatment of the metal-mechanics industry, on piezoresistividade in a cementitious composite. The waste is a residual metal mechanics industry from the wastewater treatment of the coating process of steel. The piezoresistividade is an electrical property that describes the variation of electrical resistance of some materials when subjected to forces and mechanical deformations. For this study were prepared specimens cubic with a mixture of cement, sand and water were added different percentages of residue to be compared with the reference sample. The piezoresistividade test consisted in the application of compression charges that ranged from 0 to 2.1 kN and simultaneously we recorded the changes in electrical resistance of each sample. Effets des ondes électromagnétiques de très basses fréquences sur des systèmes biologiques complexes : les procédés aérobies de traitement biologique des eaux usées et la formation de biofilm / Effect of very low frequency electromagnetic wave on complex biosystems : waste water biotreatment by activated sludge and biofilm formation

Omri, Noamen 27 May 2013 (has links)
The first part of this work concerns the coupling of VLF electromagnetic waves treatment and the processes of wastewater treatment by activated sludge in order to reduce excess sludge. Experiments are made at real -scale ( Penthaz , Switzerland),containing two parallel lines and at lab-scale with SBR pilots. The electromagnetic treatment of very low frequency ( antennaemitting harmonic frequencies F1 and F2 <10 kHz) is applied via 5 (2,3x1m) antennas in the aeration basin of the real plant. Other type of antenna (30x 5 cm) was configurated for one of the labscale assays. In the other lab-scale experiment, tubes emitting the same frequency are used for recycling the mixed liquor. With the WWTP, the amount of excess sludge produced in the treated line is reduced by about 42.5%, compared to the control line. In addition, the electromagnetic treatment does not affect the quality of treated water. In this case, outlet COD concentration was similar for the the two lines (REF and EM) and the reduction of or ganic matter yield was about 94% for the two lines. Electromagnetic treatment had no effect on the amount of excess biomass produced in all tests conducted at lab-scale. No significant effect has been noticed regarding depollution yields. The second part aims to better understand the interaction between an electromagnetic wave of very low frequency and biological material and, in particular, the effects on the development of microbial biofilms. Electromagnetic fields are covered weak fields a few milli-Tesla (voltage of the order of tens of volts and intensity of the order of one ampere) with frequencies between 0 and 10 kHz, two waves of harmonic frequencies are transmitted simultaneously. The biofilm was quantified over time by measuring different parameters (optical density, COD, protein, ATP, exopolysaccharides). The experimental results how that the electromagnetic wave limit biofilm formation ( close to 50% of untreated biofilm) if the hydraulic continuity is ensured between the electromagnetic coil. However, the effect appears bacteriostatic and no antibacterial : the application of the wave does not destroy the biofilm but reduced its establishment and upon discontinuation of the wave, the growth increases. Measurements and modeling of electromagnetic fields in the air give intensities of very weak fields that can explain a thermal or ionizing effect on the biofilm.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Tecnologia, Sa?de e Sociedade, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / Brazilian agribusiness and family agriculture have a great potential for development considering the country's soil and climate conditions. One of the main factors favoring plant development is the characteristic of the substrates used for the production of seedlings, considering that the productive development of the plants is closely linked to its initial development phase. Considering these aspects, the objective of this work was to evalue the phytotechnical development of fruit and vegetable plants, using substrates developed from fibrilose residues from the paper and sewage sludge plant of the Te?filo Otoni MG sewage treatment plant. The fibrilose residue was collected in the waste disposal yard of the Santher paper mill, located in Governador Valadares - MG. The collected material was taken to the water and soil laboratory of the Federal University of the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys, located in Te?filo Otoni, MG. The material was sieved in a 0.5 cm mesh sieve for uniformization of its particles and kept under ambient drying for one week. The treated sewage sludge was obtained from the Te?filo Otoni ETE, collected in the drying bed and taken to the laboratory, being autoclaved and sieved in 0.5 cm mesh sieves to standardize its particles. Then the mixture of the fibrilose residue with the sewage sludge was promoted in the proportions: T1(4,5:5,5), T2 (5,5:4,5), T3(6,5:3,5), T4(7,5:2,5) e T5(8,5:1,5) (Fibrilose: sewage sludge) (vol: vol). the materials were mixed and kept in styrofoam boxesfor 28 days, aiming at the stabilization of the blend. The other treatments used were: organic soil, Fertilize organic? compound and Bioplant? substrate. After this step styrofoam plates were used with cells to produce the seedlings. After filling the cells for seedling production, seeds of Papaya (Carica papaya) were sown; Passion fruit (Passiflora sp.), Eggplant (Solanum melongena), bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) and Tomato (Licopersicum sp.) 36 cells were used per experimental plot and the experiment with five replicates. The experimental design was entirely randomized. After germination, one seedling per cell was maintained. The following variables were evaluated: seedling survival index, shoot length, root length, root dry weight and aerial part. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Program of Unesp. The chemical analyzes of the substrates were performed according to UESPA 3051. The results indicated a higher index of survival of the passion fruit compared to the other species tested and chemical analyzes indicated that the substrates produced from sewage sludge and fibrillose are in agreement with the standards of CONAMA 375/2006 and ing agreement with the MAPA, which has Standards for the use of substrates in agriculture. The elevation of manganese and potassium levels potentiated the death of eggplant and passion fruit seedlings, respectively. In relation to the development of the seedlings, it was verified that the fibrilose/ sewage sludge mixture, in the proportions T3 and T4 (Fibrillose / sewage sludge) presented positive results and in many cases higher When compared to the commercial substrate and other organic materials.

Treatment of faecal sludge from pit latrines and septic tanks using lime and urea : Pathogen die-off with respect to time of storage

Lindberg, Emma, Rost, Anna January 2018 (has links)
The study was made at Lubigi sewage treatment plant in Kampala, Uganda, during February and March 2018. The aim of this master thesis was to treat faecal sludge with two different methods, urea and lime, to investigate the efficiency of the chemicals to inactivate pathogens and to estimate the feasibility and the costs of the treatment. The chemical treatments were performed on sludge of two different moisture contents. The results from the treated sludge were compared with an untreated drying bed filled at the start of the study period to use as a control. The investigated pathogens were E. coli, bacteriophages and Ascaris eggs. The total solids and volatile solids were analysed, and the pH was measured. The results of the study including a calculation of costs were used to assess the feasibility of these treatment methods at Lubigi sewage treatment plant. The results show that the treatment using lime and urea reduces the level of active pathogens in the faecal sludge. The drying process in the beds at the treatment plant also decreases the level of detected pathogens in the sludge, but not to the same extent as when adding chemicals. The E. coli in the treated sludge were under the detection limit before the study period was done. Ascaris eggs were still detected in the sludge by the final sampling occasion. Further monitoring of the treated sludge might show an additional decrease of Ascaris since the time of storage after treatment enables pathogen die-off. The bacteriophages analyses only succeeded for two sampling occasions, although a decrease of detected phages is visible in the results. Again, the time of storage is significant for pathogen reduction, which is why a decrease of bacteriophages is expected if the sludge were to be further monitored. The feasibility of the two treatment methods is mainly restricted by costs. Lime treatment is approximately seven times more expensive than urea treatment and is also required in a larger amount to treat the sludge. On the other hand, using lime to treat faecal sludge is a proven and effective method. Further studies would improve the knowledge of the sludge characteristics at Lubigi and help determine the most preferable treatment for the sludge to protect the environment and public health. For example, by focusing on one treatment method, more detailed information can be gathered, and if performing a study in a larger scale, the representativeness would increase. To make sure there is no risk of spreading pathogens to the environment, further analyses should be carried out directly before selling the sludge to farmers.

Environmental Releases of Neonicotinoid and Fipronil Insecticides via U.S. Wastewater Infrastructure

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation is focused on environmental releases from U.S. wastewater infrastructure of recently introduced, mass-produced insecticides, namely neonicotinoids as well as fipronil and its major degradates (sulfone, sulfide, amide, and desulfinyl derivatives), jointly known as fiproles. Both groups of compounds recently have caught the attention of regulatory agencies worldwide due to their toxic effects on pollinators and on aquatic invertebrates at very low, part-per-trillion levels (Chapter 1). Mass balance studies conducted for 13 U.S. wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) showed ubiquitous occurrence (3-666 ng/L) and persistence of neonicotinoids (Chapter 2). For the years 2001 through 2016, a longitudinal nationwide study was conducted on the occurrence of fiproles, via analysis of sludge as well as raw and treated wastewater samples. Sludge analysis revealed ubiquitous fiprole occurrence since 2001 (0.2-385 µg/kg dry weight) and a significant increase (2.4±0.3-fold; p<0.005) to elevated levels found both in 2006/7 and 2015/6. This study established a marked persistence of fiproles during both wastewater and sludge treatment, while also identifying non-agricultural uses as a major source of fiprole loading to wastewater (Chapter 3). Eight WWTPs were monitored in Northern California to assess pesticide inputs into San Francisco Bay from wastewater discharge. Per-capita-contaminant-loading calculations identified flea and tick control agents for use on pets as a previously underappreciated source term dominating the mass loading of insecticides to WWTPs in sewage and to the Bay in treated wastewater (Chapter 4). A nationwide assessment of fipronil emissions revealed that pet products, while representing only 22±7% of total fipronil usage (2011-2015), accounted for 86±5% of the mass loading to U.S. surface waters (Chapter 5). In summary, the root cause for considerable annual discharges into U.S. surface waters of the neonicotinoid imidacloprid (3,700-5,500 kg/y) and of fipronil related compounds (1,600-2,400 kg/y) is domestic rather than agricultural insecticide use. Reclaimed effluent from U.S. WWTPs contained insecticide levels that exceed toxicity benchmarks for sensitive aquatic invertebrates in 83% of cases for imidacloprid and in 67% of cases for fipronil. Recommendations are provided on how to limit toxic inputs in the future. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2017

Arnroth, Cornelia, Chumpitaz Chavez, Gabriel, von Euler, Edvin, Hedar, David, Lindbäck, Klara, Stenerlöv, Oskar January 2018 (has links)
Deficiencies in biotreatment due to uncontrolled growth of filamentous microorganisms is a problem for wastewater plants worldwide. The project was assigned with the task of reducing the growth of filamentous bacteria at the paper mill SCA Munksund. 12 bacteria and 1 fungi species were presented to the project as problematic due to their filamentous properties. Operating parameters affecting filamentous growth was examined and presented. The information gathered showed that a decrease in filamentous growth for 5 especially problematic bacteria could possibly be achieved by raising the DO, increasing the concentration of nutrients and decreasing the sludge age. Other parameters affecting the growth of filamentous bacteria, such as pH, temperature and F/M were found to be too diverse among the examined species. Alternative solutions not focused on finding optimal operating parameters was also investigated. Promising results were treatment using a feast-famine approach, installation of an anaerobic selector and ozonation of return sludge. A statistical analysis was also performed on operating data. Methods used were Principal component analysis, Clustering and Logistic regression. These were used as a proof of concept rather than providing meaningful data for an operating window.
