Mental health services and social inclusion in remote and rural areas of Scotland and Canada : a qualitative comparison

Daly, Clare Louise January 2014 (has links)
Mental health has become an increasingly importantly focus in the UK policy landscape because of its social and economic impact. However, most research to date has focused on living with mental health issues, or providing mental health services, in urban settings. There is limited understanding of the experiences of rural dwellers with mental health issues or the role of the voluntary sector in terms of its contribution to mental health service provision in rural areas. Thus, this PhD explores the experiences of rural mental health service users and providers in Scotland and Canada, and also considers the contribution of mental health voluntary organisations in helping to overcome the challenges of social exclusion for service users, as identified in previous research. Two theoretical lenses were used to frame the research questions. First, the concept of social inclusion provided a lens to analyse the processes by which service users achieve, or not, a sense of belonging and connection in society (Philo 2000). Second, Putnam's (2000) theory of social capital provided a further analytical lens by which to explore the contribution of rural voluntary organisations. Social capital focuses on the features of populations such as social networks, trust and norms of reciprocity that shape the quality and quantity of social interactions (McKenzie & Harpham 2006). The aims of the research were to: To explore the impact of rural life for mental health service users' daily life and access of services To understand the contribution of rural mental health services to tackling social exclusion for service users The five research questions used in this thesis were: What does it mean to experience mental health problems in remote and rural areas? What are the challenges that service providers face in remote and rural areas? What benefits are there for service users attending voluntary groups in remote and rural areas?

Ekman, Louise January 2018 (has links)

The incorporation of social cohesion in an initial teacher education programme in the Western Cape

Sirkhotte, Widad January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / This is a qualitative study that explores social cohesion in terms of how it is understood by, teacher educators and pre-service teachers, and how it is incorporated, taught, and experienced in an initial teacher education (ITE) programme that is located within one university in the Western Cape, South Africa. It uses semi-structured interviews, observations, and a focus group interview to understand how teacher educators think about and teach social cohesion. Moreover, it focuses on how fourth year pre-service teachers experience the programme in relation to debates on social cohesion. Findings suggest that teacher educators’ understandings and pre-service teachers’ backgrounds influence their experiences of an ITE programme. It further suggests that pre-service teachers do develop attitudes and pedagogies for social cohesion, all be it unevenly so. This study contributes to better understandings of social cohesion as a priority of South African government, and how it is experienced by pre-service teachers in an ITE programme. In so doing, it contributes to how social cohesion may be realised in post-apartheid South Africa.

Deficiência e trabalho no setor informa

Tissi, Maria Cristina 17 August 2018 (has links)

Nesta direção, expressam-se os esforços realizados pelos entrevistados em reelaborar, a partir das dificuldades enfrentadas no dia-a-dia, as representações dominantes / Abstract: ln the field of rehabilitation to people with physical impairments work has been treated as a factor of social integration. Disabled's insert in the formal workplace seems to be complex in front of the current transformations in the productive processes. The informal section has being noticed as an altemative that could represent larger access and permanence conditions. The thematic deficiency and work was approached in relation to people with physical impairments that act in the informal section as street paddler in the city of São Paulo, in an exploratory perspective and of qualitative court. There were accomplished semi-structured interviews with disabled persons that act in the street trade, to colect testimonys that reveal the conditions in which the occupation takes place and the representations elaborated on disabilities, work, health and disease, using thematic analysis. The integration in workplace, although marked by processes of social exc1usiqh, accentuated in the specific context of repression to the street trade moved by the City hall of the Municipal district, contradicting, is an inc1usion way, facilitating opportunities of economic integration and of accomplishments, concrete and symbolic, in the plan of the sociability. ln another analysis plan the representations of disable elaborated by the interviewees oppose the representations about healthy people's, approaching to the conceptions of the sick people. However, they conceive their selves with the attributes that they use to qualify the healthy people, even so not extending these representations for disabled social segment. ldentifying themselves as disabled persons they oppose to representations that prevail socially concerning disabilities, associated to unproductiveness, uselessness, dependence, lack, among other elements. ln this direction, they expresses his efforts to elaborate the dominant representations, starting from the difficulties faced in the everyday life / Mestrado / Ciências Sociais em Saúde / Mestre em Saude Coletiva

Psychological, Social, and Immunological Outcomes following Marital Separation

Hasselmo, Karen Elizabeth, Hasselmo, Karen Elizabeth January 2017 (has links)
Close relationships play an integral role in human health (Coan & Sbarra, 2015). It follows, then, that the dissolution of an important relationship can have a variety of negative health consequences (Amato, 2010; Kitson & Morgan, 1990; Sbarra, Law, & Portley, 2011), and social loss confers vulnerability to a range of morbidities and early mortality. Disrupted marital status is one of the strongest sociodemographic predictors of stress-induced physical illness (Somers, 1979) and marital disruption has long been reported as one of life's most stressful events (Bloom, Asher, & White, 1978). Robust evidence links divorce or separation to poorer health outcomes; however, the exact mechanisms through which relationship dissolution influences our health so profoundly are not yet fully elucidated (Sbarra, Hasselmo, & Bourassa, 2015). The current study investigated how changes in psychological responses to divorce are associated with changes in immune responding in recently-separated adults (N = 55). I followed participants over an average of five months, collecting psychological distress measures at three visits, each one month apart, and immune measures at two visits, five months apart. To assess how variability in social engagement is associated with immunological responses following the end of a marriage, I incorporated naturalistic, observational data using a new methodology. I found that an objectively derived composite of social behaviors including (a) time spent with others; (b) time spent socializing/entertaining; (c) time spent in substantive conversation; and (d) time spent receiving positive support predicted concurrent immune outcomes over and above the effects of psychological distress and/or loneliness, and that psychological distress may exert indirect influence on immune outcomes through social integration. Furthermore, attachment style revealed differential longitudinal associations between social integration and immune outcomes. This research expands current knowledge on the immune-relevant outcomes of divorce and separation, and includes new methodology for naturalistically-derived measures of social engagement in determining how this common life stressor is associated with health over time.

Community safety and social solidarity: the role of neighbourhood watch organisations in effecting social integration and cohesion in Cravenby, Ravensmead and Parow West

Mweyeleka, Tshipama January 2014 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The study explored and examined new forms of social relations at the interpersonal, community and institutional levels that have emerged in the social organisation of Neighbourhood Watch Organisations in Parow West, Parow East, Ravensmead and Cravenby, in the Western Cape. The objective of the research was to understand how social solidarities generated through participation in neighbourhood watch organisations, institutional partnerships and working principles influenced and fostered the development of social solidarity, social integration and social cohesion of local communities and a new sense of nationhood. Towards the above end the study made use of a Functionalist perspective based on Durkheim’s concepts of mechanical and organic social solidarity. These functionalist concepts were used to identify and to examine the new forms of social cooperation and associations that emerged in the context of local neighbourhoods, and formally in neighbourhood watch organisations and partnerships engaged in residential property crime preventive measures. The study design which was employed to probe social solidarities in neighbourhoods and local communities made use of qualitative research methodologies. The empirical data was collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews, as well as focus group discussions with all respondents belonging either to the neighbourhood watch organisations. Alternatively respondents were also drawn from related institutions involved in residential property crime prevention, such as the SAPS. And finally, the data was interpreted within a Durkheimean framework of social solidarity in order to reflect on the extent to which Neighbourhood Watch Organisations have played a significant role in building social solidarity, integration and cohesion in Parow West, Parow East, Ravensmead and Cravenby. This was ultimately done in order to establish an empirical basis to consider the extent to which South African society has moved from apartheid to liberal democratic values and practices from the ground up in Neighbourhood Watch Organisations.
