Leading lights: The promotion of garden suburb plans and planners in interwar Australia

Nichols, David, david.nichols@deakin.edu.au January 2001 (has links)
This thesis explores interwar town planning in Australia, focusing on the period of large-scale urban expansion in the 1920’s. It problematises aspects of Australia’s urban planning history, particularly the 1920s ‘garden suburb. It also investigates the question of the use of international planning ideas in Australia, and the assertion or creation of authority by the Australian planning movement. The thesis additionally investigates the use of authoritative planning rhetoric for commercial or creative advantage. The thesis argues that the majority of innovative planning projects in the interwar years took place in the formation and foundation of the garden suburb. It shows that the garden suburb – assumed in much planning history to be an inferior form of Ebenezer Howard’s ‘garden city’ ideal – has, in fact, a number of precedents in 19th century Australian suburbia, some of which were retained in 20th century commercial estate design. Much of the Australian town planner’s authority at this time required recognition and awareness of the interests and needs of the general public, as negotiated through land vendors. As Australians looked to the future, and to the US for guidance, they were invited to invest in speculative real estate development modelled on this vision. The thesis concentrates primarily on the lives, careers and work of the British-Australian architect-planner Sir John Sulman; the Chicagoan architect-planners Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin; and the Australian surveyor-planner Saxil Tuxen. These individuals were among the most prominent planners in Australia in the interwar years. All designed Australian garden suburbs, and combined advocacy with practice in private and public spheres. The thesis examines images and personas, both generic and individual, of the planner and the vendor. It shows that the formulation of the garden suburb and design practices, and the incorporation of international elements into Australian planning, are important in the creation of planning practice and forms. It also outlines the way these continue to have significant impact, in diverse and important ways, on both the contemporary built environment and planning history itself.

Towards a Suburban Agora: Expanding an intermodal node into a community marketplace

Lo, Joseph 16 September 2009 (has links)
This thesis investigates the condition of the contemporary suburban landscape and the potential of transit infrastructure in re-establishing the continuity of the fragmented social fabric. It follows the emerging discourse in addressing low density environment as a phenomenon that is becoming the dominant form in our individualistic and consumption-based society. The investigation focuses on Mid-Scarborough, Ontario, as a case study of a suburban ethnic community. Recognizing that high-intensity activity nodes are potential incubators of density and social meaning within the otherwise dispersed and fragmented suburban setting, this thesis proposes to expand an existing intermodal station into a mixed-use complex. Th rough diversifying the function of transit infrastructure with public and commerical programming, the design proposal channels existing intensity towards activating the social potential of interstitial public space. Ultimately, improved interconnectivity and communications between public fragments will foster social integration and the development of regional identity.

Om jag säger Rinkeby, vad tänker du då?

Tihic, Esed January 2013 (has links)
The objective of this research was to study how two newspapers in Sweden, Aftonbladet and Expressen are creating an image of the Stockholm suburb Rinkeby. The method used to do the study was qualitative content analysis. Ten articles were chosen, five off either newspaper and were found on the internet homepages of the newspapers on 15 November of 2013 and 27 January of 2014. Several theories were used in the study. Agenda setting theory, a media theory that explains the power of media, Figuration theory developed by Norbert Elias that deals with power struggles between different groups in society. Labeling theory explains how society, by labeling someone a “criminal” may accept it as an own identity and become one. Mats Franzén theory of power and how it can be understood thru discourse, context and resources. While studying the subject I realized that for long time the suburbs of Sweden have been portrayed in a negative context, especially “famous” suburbs like Rinkeby. The suburbs’ are constructed by the media as very dangerous places, with young people (often males) running wild and engaging in destructive behavior.

Gyvensenos ypatybės Žemuosiuose Šančiuose urbanistinės ir architektūrinės raidos kontekste / Lifestyle peculiarities in Žemieji Šanciai in context of urban and architectural development

Rimkutė, Laura 13 June 2014 (has links)
Žemieji Šančiai pasižymi savitu urbanistiniu tinklu, kuris nuo XIX a. pab. klostėsi savaimingai. Nors Pirmosios Lietuvos Respublikos metu buvo bandymų priemiestį perplanuoti, tačiau dėl tankaus rajono užstatymo, to padaryti nepavyko. Žemuosiuose Šančiuose dominuoja medinis užstatymas. Pagrindiniai pastatų tipai: sodybiniai ir nuomojami namai. Vietomis yra išlikęs ir miestiečio namo tipas. Juozapavičiaus prospekte stovi išlikę carinės Rusijos laikotarpiu statyti puskarininkių ir geležinkeliečių namai. Daugelis namų praradę savo autentiškumą, renovuoti panaudojant šiuolaikines, ne itin tinkamas statybines medžiagas. Kai kurie namai turi keletą savininkų, kurie namų fasadus remontuoja padrikai, nederindami vienas su kitu. Todėl kartais namai atrodo neestetiškai, primena ,,kregždžių lizdus“. Žemųjų Šančių istorinės, urbanistinės ir architektūrinės savybės nulėmė tam tikrus gyvensenos ypatumus. Tankus užstatymas suformavo glaudžius santykius su kaimynais, skurdesnio ir žemesnio socialinio sluoksnio gyvenamos vietos įvaizdis nulėmė savitą vietinių gyventojų mentalitetą, prie namų esantys... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Suburbs of Lithuanian cities did not gain scientists’ considerable attention. Old towns, new towns and districts with other valuable architectural features are the most explored. Meanwhile, fringes of cities are forgotten. Žemieji Šanciai were researched in accordance with historical approach, as well as part of the Kaunas fortress, but there is almost no information about urban development and peculiarities of wooden building. Žemieji Šanciai has a distinctive urban network, which since the end of nineteenth century has developed self-contained. Although during First Republic of Lithuania it has been trying to redesign the suburbs, but due to dense built-up area, it was failed. Wooden buildings are dominated in Žemieji Šanciai. The main building types are homestead and rented houses. Townsman house type also remained in some places. In Juozapavičiaus avenue houses of non-commissioned officers and railway workers are standing remained and they were built during Tsarist Russia. Many houses have lost their authenticity and were renovated using modern, not very suitable for building materials. Some houses have several owners, which repair their house facades disconnectedly, do not combine one with another. So sometimes houses look non-aesthetic, remind „nests of swallows”. Historical, urban and architectural features of Žemieji Šanciai have determined certain lifestyle peculiarities. Dense building formed close relationship with the neighbors, residence image of poorer and... [to full text]

Stigmatisering och identitet : Hur sex ungdomar i Husby upplever sitt bostadsområde

Eklind, Christoffer, Albro, Daniella January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how youth identity formation can be influenced by a stigmatized neighborhood. Therefore, we investigated how young people experience the medial representation of the residential area, and how it may affect their identity formation. The method was based on a qualitative approach where six young people were interviewed from the suburb Husby near Stockholm.Theories that have been applied in our analysis were Goffman's stigma theory, Ristilammis suburb discourse and a theory of “us and “them”. With these applications, we were able to identify how a stigmatized residential maintains and constructs youth identity formation. In summary, the results indicated that our respondents in the suburb of Husby were aware of the stigmatized image of their suburban is described. However differenced theirs own perception of the area in comparison with the assigned. The young people were concerned about the negative reputation of their location (suburb), but we noticed that the affinity outweighs this negativity.
