A critical review of four novels by Celia Brayfield considering their production and impact in the context of contemporary literature

Brayfield, Celia January 2015 (has links)
This critical review of four novels by Celia Brayfield, Getting Home, Mister Fabulous And Friends, Heartswap and Wild Weekend, outlines the themes that give the works defining coherence, which are a feminist evaluation of gender roles and an exploration of the relationship between space or place in millennial Britain. The author contextualises her novels in considering literary representations of the suburb in literature and use of the device of gender reversal in fiction. The review demonstrates that the novels make a significant and coherent contribution to knowledge as resonant and well-received creative works and provides an assessment of their international and national impact. In discussing the inspiration and influences of her work, her choices in characterisation, narrative and dramatised argument, and in particular her decision to create responses to two classic texts using the device of gender reversal, the author justifies the overarching approach and methodologies used for these novels.

La fécondité à Paris et dans sa région au XIXe siècle / Fertility in Paris and the surrounding region in the nineteenth century

Brée, Sandra 10 June 2011 (has links)
In the century of birth control in France, the capital and the surrounding region is a privileged analytical framework for deepening knowledge on demographic transition. Through an aggregative analysis appropriate to the sources and the issues examined, this work aims to understand the movement of fertility in Paris (at the district, borough and city level), and the surrounding region (at the departmental and municipal level) in the nineteenth century, to distinguish legitimate and illegitimate fertility (and cohabiting couples from unwed mothers for the latter); and then to consider it in relation to economic, social, cultural or demographic determinants in order to understand, through the spatial distribution, the social differentiation of fertility behaviours.

Pentecostalismo e lulismo na periferia de São Paulo: estudo de caso sobre uma Assembleia de Deus na eleição municipal de 2012 / Pentecostalism and Lulism in the outskirts of São Paulo: case study of an Assembly of God in the municipal election of 2012

Vinicius Saragiotto Magalhães do Valle 09 December 2013 (has links)
This research analyses the electoral dynamic within a pentecostal church of the denomination Assembly of God, in one of its main ministries, the ministry of Belém. The investigation approached both institutional and membership levels. In the institutional dimension, I analyzed the speeches, strategies and practices of the church in the electoral period. In memberships dimension, I analyzed the shaping of the points of views and them effects in the electoral level, considering the influence of the church and also socioeconomics issues. The observation conducted covered both proportional and majoritarian levels, aiming the broad investigation of the electoral dynamic in this specific place and electoral process. This investigation founds different kinds and intensities of the institution in the proportional and majoritarian levels. In membership dimension, I found a strong support to the candidate promoted by the church in the proportional level, deriving of the communitarians ties of the religious sociability. In the majoritarian level, the discussion of the socioeconomic issues was more present, and a part of the members disagreed with the indication of the church.

Kidane, Dina, Yasin, Abdulahi January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to understand how culture of silence effect the Swedish suburb and it's undermining effects. By interviewing people that work within different organisations in the suburb, we strive to pursue a deeper understanding on how they are affected by the culture of silence in their daily work. In comparison to the different areas, the Swedish suburb are faced with socioeconomic differences, high crime rate, as well as high unemployment. These and others factors that we are going to present shows that culture of silence consciously and/or unconsciously effects the Swedish suburb society. When we initially started this bachelor thesis, we found a limited research about culture of silence and its social effects on the society. Therefore, we seek to contribute to wider knowledge within the academic field of culture of silence. The study is based on a qualitative research method in which eight chosen interviews conducted among social workers, teachers, and police officers, all whom work preventatively. Additionally, we tried to understand if culture of silence was experienced within their organisation. Furthermore, the theoretical framework for this dissertation comprise of symbolic interaction, role theory, and labeling theory. Culture of silence is believed to have an unfavorable effect on the society, as the result of the study shows that it interrupts the interviewees daily work. But also that culture of silence exist within organisations and the suburb.

Vergara Guerrero, Daniela, Melki, Denise January 2019 (has links)
The study "Who you are (not)” was written by Daniela Vergara-Guerrero and Denise Melki. This study aims to examine how young adults view their living area Tensta. The intention is to examine how the respondents think society views their living area and how it affects their identity creation. The study was answered through the following questions: How do the respondents describe their living area? And how do the respondents feel about the representation of their living area looks in relation to identity creation? The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six young adults aged 16-20 from Tensta. The study is based on Goffman's theory about stigma and Hammaren & Johannsson's theory about identity.  The study's results show that young adults have an extensive sense of community and pride in Tensta and its inhabitants. Despite the heated discourse of crime and other social dilemmas in the media, the respondents point out that their reality in Tensta differs from the medias' opinion. The respondents are aware of the disturbance that occurs in the living area, but they feel that their residential area is not at all like the media portrays it and their positive view outweighs the negativity they hear about their suburb.

Rezidenční spokojenost domácností bytových domů v pražských lokalitách - role občanské vybavenosti / Residential satisfaction of households in tenement houses in localities of Prague - the role of civic amenities

Bursa, Otakar January 2018 (has links)
Residential satisfaction belongs to important elements of human's satisfaction with life. It is created by the unique set of different components to which the accessibility and quality of civic amenities in a neighbourhood may also be included. Nevertheless, the importance of this factor used to be underestimated and the real connexion between residential satisfaction and the presence of civic amenities has not come out so far (Swindell, Kelly 2005). Therefore, the diploma thesis focuses on the qualitative- analytical research of residential satisfaction in two differently served Prague's localities with the aim to deepen the current knowledge of this issue. The results show that the presence of civic amenities in the neighbourhood has a significant effect in creating residential satisfaction which is comparable to the quality of housing and neighbourhood features. However, this relationship is partly influenced by the assigned importance of services' presence that especially varies according to the locality type (housing estate or suburban) and the position of household in a life cycle. Keywords: residential satisfaction, civic amenities, Prague, housing estate, suburb

Remember the Future / Kom ihåg framtiden

Sandström, Nils, Wiklander, Jakob January 2014 (has links)
Remember the Future is a typological addition to the renowned Stockholm suburb of Fittja, an area built during the Million Programme in the early 70’s, and the project tries to weave itself into this unfashionable urban fabric. Fittja’s different building types share a strong common language, they remind us of a family, a group of siblings, all of the same generation. Our project enacts the return of a lost sibling, raised under very different circumstances, but unmistakably of the same blood, and its return changes the family dynamic forever.

Vi ville bara ha ett plejs för sånna som oss : Exploring the Swedish Punk Movement in Two Swedish Newspapers 1978-1980 / We just wanted a place for people like us : Exploring the Swedish Punk Movement in Two Swedish Newspapers 1978-1980

Ekström, Moa January 2023 (has links)
In 1920s Sweden the concept of Folkhemmet was born and described as a concept and an idea of the modern Swedish well-fare state where the nation was considered a family. Through governmental founding, a new modern Sweden was planned. The first suburbs was introduced in 1930 and the 1950s the next project was finished, the so-called ABC-staden (ABC-town in English). One of the suburbs belonging to the ABC-town project was Rågsved, a place which is associated with the Swedish punk movement and the cultural association of Oasen. In 1965 the next building project was introduced, now called Miljonprogrammet. Miljonprogrammet became criticized for being a constant working place and isolating citizens in the suburbs, leading to segregation. A furthermore consequence of the segregation was when working-class families got a better economy and left the traditional apartment housing for newly produced town halls it opened for low-income families to move in. Meanwhile, the media framing of the suburb also began to change. The narrative of the suburb had previously been a hope for a bright better future for families to live in, but it later changed to be a place for criminality, under-employment, alcoholism, and substance abuse. Teenagers and young adults stuck at the bottom of the economic chain were affected worst by this change. This also occurred with the oil crisis in the late 1970s, making the end of the Swedish record years. The Swedish punk movement was introduced in 1976 inspired by the British and American punk scene. The movement established itself in the suburbs among young adults who did not feel like they were heard. The movement was, in difference to previous youth cultures, political which affected the message of the movement. In the capital of Stockholm, punk rockers found themselves wanting something more, a place outside the centre of the city where they all could have a place to be. This project later resulted in the cultural association of Oasen in Rågsved. In 1979 after the city council of Vantör decided to throw out the association they answered by occupying the locale. They demanded a place to feel at home in the suburb they lived in. This thesis is discussing the modern Swedish suburb using the Swedish punk movement as a historic example. The thesis’s theoretical framework focuses on intersectionality, place, space, and journalistic framing.

Krajina, místo prostor: případová studie Vraného nad Vltavou / Landscape, Place, Space: a case study of Vraný nad Vltavou

Sequensová, Linda January 2022 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the suburban landscape, place and space of the Vrané nad Vltavou municipality located in close proximity to the capital city of Prague. The author approaches the suburban landscape as a specific type of landscape, which combines elements of urban and rural character. The author describes the manifestations of this landscape liminality using ethnographic methods and demonstrates the diversity of spatial structures with her own visual documentation, together with a depiction of the specificity of not only the researched landscape, but also the specificity of the suburb itself in the Czech context. Through the concept of the landscape applied in the socio-anthropological discourse, the author connects the material aspects of the natural environment with the social level of ideas, feelings, and experiences that everyone forms in contact with the landscape. In this sense, the landscape is never finished and neutral, but on the contrary, it is constantly negotiated and confirmed in the daily interactions of human and the landscape. The same holds true of the landscape, which is the subject of suburbanization processes changing its character. Therefore, on the one hand, the author depicts the character of the researched suburban landscape, on the other hand, she maps...
