Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis comprises a critical analysis of the relationship between form and function in
contemporary iconography that contains religious themes. From the theoretical stance of Visual
Culture iconography can be defined as ‘context-specific visual language’. I suggest that meaning is
created not only through material usage but also through the hermeneutic content of images. By
means of a comparison between an example of what I deem literal iconography and another of
figurative iconography, I explore two divergent methods through which religiously-inspired
iconography can be employed in the construction of visual texts. The two examples comprise of
the evangelical poster Die Smal en Breë Weg (The Broad and Narrow Way) and Willem Boshoff’s
Bread-and-Pebble Road Map (2004). / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie skripsie omvat ‘n kritiese analise van die verhouding tussen die aard en die funksionering
van kontemporêre ikonografie wat religieuse temas bevat. Vanuit die teoretiese hoek van Visuele
Kultuur kan ikonografie gedefinieer word as ‘konteks-spesifieke visuele taal’. Ek stel voor dat
betekenis nie alleen gegenereer word deur die materiële gebruik van beeldmateriaal nie, maar ook
deur die hermeneutiese inhoud daarvan. Deur ‘n vergelykende analise tussen ‘n voorbeeld van wat
ek as letterlike ikonografie beskou en ‘n voorbeeld van figuurlike ikonografie, ondersoek ek twee
uiteenlopende metodes waardeur religieus-geïnspireerde ikonografie werksaam kan wees in die

1 Abstract: This thesis is entitled "Selected topics from the educational theme A human and his world; explored employing the methods and techniques of Drama In Education." The first section explores the theory. It not only deals with Drama In Education; its content, principles, form, methods, and planning; but also what a teacher of drama should be; the characteristics of children in the early years of education; the assessment of drama; and of course the theme - A human and his world. The practical section describes the elements of a range of methods and contains individual lesson script. Each lesson is underpinned by a particular method. This section goes on to deal with assigned goals; their verification in practice; and finally, conclusions drawn from the implementation of the planned lessons. In designed lessons I used selected methods and techniques of structured drama and preparatoried games and exercises. I found out that very different topics from this educational theme A Human and his world can be worked up by methods and techniques of drama education because I suggested different topics from this educational theme and I verified them in practice.

Esta tese investiga o modo de organização dos domínios nominal, verbal e dos adjetivos em Português do Brasil (PB), tendo como guia a aceitabilidade de sentenças com todo. Para o inglês, a natureza do parâmetro orienta a seleção de argumentos por operadores; já para o PB, o que importa é a oposição entre tipos de escala. O PB não tem determinantes que distingam entre nome contável e massivo, como much e many. O operador aspectual progressivo não modifica estados em inglês, mas em PB sim. Em inglês, very seleciona adjetivos de parâmetro relativo. Em PB, muito + adjetivo tem parâmetro relativo, e todo + adjetivo tem parâmetro absoluto. Todo é um operador interdomínios, sensível aos tipos de escala. Todo modifica a relação de predicação. Todo impõe condições (quantitativas) sobre como a saturação de um predicado por certo argumento deve ocorrer. Todo não é nem um modificador nominal, nem um quantificador canônico como cada. Todo não cria, apenas modifica uma relação existente. A distribuição que ocorre em sentenças com todo é uma entre as muitas formas de saturação de um predicado por um argumento: uma relação incremental. Se o argumento for quantizado, o predicado necessariamente também se tornará quantizado. Analisamos uma descrição definida (DD) como um sintagma de medida (SM). O artigo definido torna um predicado nominal em denotação quantizada, mas todo não. Relacionamos ser quantizado a ser argumental, e ser cumulativo a ser predicativo. E associamos sentidos diferentes às posições de todo na sentença. / This thesis takes the distribution of todo as a probe for the structure of nominal, verbal and adjective domains in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Todo is a Degree Modifier (DM) and is sensitive to scale structure. English DMs (e.g., very) select adjectives by their standards; the BP DMs select adjectives only by their scale structure. However, they produce phrases with standard specialization. Todo + adjective shows absolute standard interpretation. We claim that the domains show the same properties in both languages, but the nature of scale standard matters in a distinct level for each one. We claim that todo is neither a noun modifier nor a true quantifier. Todo is a relation modifier. Todo modifies the way the argument saturates the predicate. A quantized incremental argument will make the predicate quantized as well. Todo is not the true source of distributivity, since incremental relations occur even in its absence. Definite Descriptions are treated as measure phrases. The definite article relates noun predicates to situations. So it will change a bare noun into a quantized denotation, which todo cannot do. Each land site corresponds to a different meaning for floating todo. Read more

A Lei 10.639/2003 institui a obrigatoriedade da temática \"História e Cultura Afro-Brasileira\" no currículo escolar, abrangendo os estabelecimentos de Ensino Fundamental e Médio das redes oficiais e particulares. Segundo esta lei, esses conteúdos devem ser ministrados no âmbito de todo o currículo escolar, incluindo, assim, o componente disciplinar inglês. O objetivo desta pesquisa consiste justamente em investigar as possibilidades de sensibilização para a temática étnico-racial, junto a um grupo de alunos de Ensino Fundamental da Escola de Aplicação da FEUSP, por meio da aplicação da lei nas aulas de inglês. A metodologia empregada está voltada para a criação e aplicação de materiais didáticos, bem como para a análise desse processo. O trabalho está embasado na teoria sócio-histórico-cultural de Lev Semenovich Vigotski, seus colaboradores e seguidores, principalmente no conceito de ZDP e de desenvolvimento humano por meio de ações mediadas, sejam por instrumentos como material didático ou por outros seres humanos o professor-pesquisador. Os resultados indicam a adequação da disciplina para a aplicação da lei, especialmente no sentido de promover engajamento e participação dos alunos, no uso da língua como meio de acesso a bens culturais e de promoção de reflexão, ao invés do estudo apenas de seu léxico e de suas estruturas gramaticais. As conclusões apontam para a necessidade de frequência das ações, bem como para a diversificação das estratégias didáticas. Também se evidenciou a relevância da lei como um esforço para a conscientização acerca das contribuições dos afrodescendentes na história e na formação da identidade e da cultura brasileiras como um todo. / The law 10.639/2003 establishes the obligation of \"history and Afro-Brazilian Culture\" themes in the school curriculum, comprehending the primary, secondary, public and private schools of the official educational system. According to the law, its contents must be taught in all curriculum subjects, thus, including English. The aim of this research is to investigate the possibilities of raising awareness about ethnic and racial themes with a group of secondary pupils at Escola de Aplicação da FEUSP, through the law implementation in the English lessons. The methodology involves the elaboration and use of teaching materials and the analysis of its process. The research is based on the historical sociocultural theory of Lev Semenovich Vigotski, his co-researchers and followers, mainly in the concepts of ZPD and human development through mediated action, either by tools or other human beings, seen here as the teaching material and the teacher-researcher respectively. Results show the English subject adequacy to implement the law, especially in terms of students\' engagement and participation, using the language as a means of access to cultural assets and reflection upon them, instead of lexicon and grammar practice only. Conclusions point to the need of frequency and diversification of didactical strategies, as well as to the relevance of the law as an effort to raise awareness about the afro-descendants importance in the history and in the formation of the Brazilian identity and culture as a whole. Previous issue date: 2008-05-19 / Even it has been conceived to claim the entertainment, not the education,
television is endowed with enormous strength training, as it can unite two great
powers: the information and entertainment. Through the approach of the viewer daily
life, achieved mainly through the fictional narrative, television can create more
identification between the viewer and characters, transmitting the desired information.
This research aimed to analyze the fictional narrative addressed to brazilian teens,
holding as object the program "Confissões de Adolescente . The problem that we
tried discuss was: Through the fiction, can we discuss subjects deemed controversial
or dense? How is its approaching? Our hypothesis is that this idea is plausible. Due
to the structure of episodes, "Confissões de Adolescente" had the possibility of
working each theme in more depth. As such, abortion, drug, policy, among others.
The objective of the research was to examine structurally the program, bringing to the
highlight the resources used to capture the attention of teenage public and create
identification between them and the program itself. It was intended also to identify
how the themes were entered and treated in the episodes and how the program was
positioned in relation to them. The research had as theoretical basis on authors as
Arlindo Machado (analysis television), Ana Maria Balogh (fictional speech), Joan
Ferrés (socialization through television), besides Sigmund Freud (Psychoanalysis),
Contardo Calligaris e Sérgio Ozella (Psychology Social-historic) / Mesmo que tenha sido concebida com a finalidade de entreter e não de
educar, a televisão é dotada de uma enorme força pedagógica, pois consegue unir
dois grandes poderes: a informação e o entretenimento. É através de uma
aproximação com o cotidiano do telespectador, conseguida principalmente por meio
da narrativa ficcional, que ela consegue criar maior identificação do telespectador
com as personagens e situações, transmitindo, desse modo, a informação desejada.
Esta pesquisa buscou analisar a narrativa ficcional dirigida aos adolescentes
brasileiros, tendo como objeto o seriado "Confissões de Adolescente". O problema
que se procurou discutir foi: Pode-se, por meio da ficção, abordar assuntos
considerados densos ou polêmicos? Nossa hipótese é a de que essa idéia é
plausível. Devido à estrutura baseada em episódios, "Confissões de Adolescente"
obteve a possibilidade de trabalhar cada tema discutido, como, por exemplo, aborto,
drogas, política, entre outros, com maior profundidade. O objetivo da pesquisa
consistiu em analisar estruturalmente o programa destacando, assim, os recursos
utilizados para capturar a atenção do público adolescente bem como criar a
identificação desse público com o programa. Pretendeu-se também identificar como
foram inseridos e abordados os temas nos episódios e como o programa se
posicionou em relação a eles. A pesquisa teve como base teórica autores como

Depuis 2002, la « décroissance » s’est imposée dans le débat sur l’écologie, l’économie et notre futur. Le présent travail interroge la théologie protestante à travers l’une des principales plumes de cette pensée hétérodoxe : Serge Latouche. Cet économiste français athée effectue une critique culturaliste de la société de croissance. Il en instruit un triple procès et appelle à la décolonisation créatrice de notre imaginaire partagé, afin de cheminer vers des sociétés d’abondance frugale autonomes, conviviales et heureuses. Cette position mène la théologie à s’interroger en premier lieu sur le croître. Au vu des données bibliques, il est constaté que l’imagerie chrétienne de la croissance augmente et contredit l’imaginaire dominant croissanciste. Partant, deux contributions sont apportées à une théologie du croître : l’une sur l’enrichissement commandé au disciple et à l’Église, où cette croissance est subvertie, l’autre sur la pousse des plantes et les proliférations d’animaux, où ces croissances sont réhabilitées. / Since 2002, “degrowth” has made its way into the debate on ecology, economics, and our future. The present work questions Protestant theology through one of the main writers of this heterodox thinking: Serge Latouche. This French atheist economist makes a culturalist critique of the society of growth. He puts it on a threefold trial and calls for the creative decolonization of our shared imaginary, so as to move towards autonomous, convivial, and happy societies of frugal abundance. This position first of all leads theology to question growth. Based on biblical data, it is noticed that the Christian imaginary of growth enriches and contradicts the dominant growthist imaginary. Hence, two contributions to a theology of growth are provided: one about the command to get rich addressed to the disciple and to the church, where this kind of growth is subverted, another about plant growth and animal proliferation, where these kinds of growth are restored to favor. This study highlights the stereotypical depictions of journalists in film using a narrative analysis of four major Hollywood productions, starting with All the President’s Men from 1976 through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2011. Its purpose is to highlight traits given to journalists in the movies and re-occuring themes in the portrayal of the media and the journalistic occupation. Differences and commonalities between the films are concluded in a discussion of ethics, personalities and the media’s self image. The paper can be seen as a contribution to the paradigm in which journalism in the movies is perceived at the moment. It offers a wide explanation to how the image of the journalist is conveyed to the public, an image that differs from how real life journalists go about in daily work life. This is essential, since most people never get to experience journalistic work in reality – but solely from popular culture – which distorts the perception of the media as the fourth estate.

The aesthetics of sadism and masochism in Italian renaissance painting /Taylor, Chloë January 2002 (has links)
This thesis analyses selected paintings and aspects of life of the Italian Renaissance in terms of the aesthetic properties of sadistic and masochistic symptomatologies and creative production, as these have been explored by philosophers such as Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, Marcel Henaff, and Gilles Deleuze. One question which arises from this analysis, and is considered in this thesis, is of the relation between sexual perversion and history, and in particular between experiences of violence, (dis)pleasure and desire, and historically specific forms of discourse and power, such as legislation on rape; myths and practices concerning marriage alliance; the depiction of such myths and practices in art; religion; and family structures. A second question which this thesis explores is the manners in which sadistic and masochistic artistic production function politically, to bolster pre-existing gender ideologies or to subvert them. Finally, this thesis considers the relation between sadism and masochism and visuality, both by bringing literary models of perversion to an interpretation of paintings, and by exploring the amenability of different genres of visual art to sadism and masochism respectively.

This diploma thesis is focused on accumulated experience of primary schools with the creation of school curriculum and the first practical experience with its implementation The first part of this thesis is devoted to the history of Czech education reforms, defines the basic terminology, discusses the different parts of general educational program and describes the creation of school curriculum. Another part is devoted to the research where we compare the experience of some primary schools with the creation and the implementation of school curriculum. In this case, it is used the method of questionnares and observation. The research is mainly focused on the problems of its own making and implementation.
