In search of a revised model of health : exploring the relationship between meaning and health

Van Wyk, Hanlie 06 1900 (has links)
Research in Logotherapy substantiates the influence of meaning on psychological health and Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) corroborates the effects of psychological health on physical health. This dissertation explores the relationship between meaning and physical health hypothesising that purpose affects physical health. Methodology Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), ANOVAs and stepwise regression were used to explore three possible models. Results EFA revealed four factors, purpose, fear, vitality and aggression. Significant correlations were found between purpose, vitality (0.42) and work application (0.53). Despite the significant relationship between purpose and vitality, the lack of Chi-square is significant, suggesting that additional variables should be introduced into the model. Conclusion People reporting high levels of purpose together with low levels of fear and aggression, can be characterised by high vitality and an absence of medical conditions. Future research should focus on evaluating meaning centred interventions on immunity and vitality. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

An Investigation Of 10th Grade Students

Oren, Duygu 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the present study is to identify 10th grade students&rsquo / use of proof schemes in geometry questions and to investigate the differences in the use of proof schemes with respect to their cognitive style and gender. The sample of the study was 224 tenth grade students from four secondary schools. Of those, 126 participants were female and 98 participants were males. Data was collected at the end of the academic year 2005-2006 through uses of two data collection instruments: Geometry Proof Test (GPT) and Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT). GPT, included eleven open-ended questions on triangle concept, was developed by researcher to investigate students&rsquo / use of proof schemes. The proof schemes reported by Harel and Sowder (1998) were used as a framework while categorizing the students&rsquo / responses. GEFT developed by Witkin, Oltman, Raskin and Karp (1971) was used to determine cognitive styles of the students as field dependent (FD), field independent (FI) and field mix (FM). To analyze data, descriptive analyses, repeated measure ANOVA with three proof schemes use scores as the dependent variables and a 2 (gender) x 3 (cognitive styles: FD, FM, FI) multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with three proof schemes use scores as the dependent variables was employed. The results revealed that students used externally based proof schemes and empirical proof schemes significantly more than analytical proof schemes. Furthermore, females used empirical proof schemes significantly more than the males. Moreover, field dependent students used externally based proof schemes in GPT significantly more than field independent students. Also, field independent students use analytical proof schemes significantly more than field dependent mix students. There was no significant interaction between gender and cognitive style in the use of proof schemes. The significant differences in students&rsquo / use of proof schemes with respect to their gender and FDI cognitive style connote that gender and FDI cognitive styles are important individual differences and should be taken into consideration as instructional variables, while teaching and engaging in proof in geometry and in mathematics.

Φιλίππου, Γιώργος 06 May 2015 (has links)
The fact that Fibonacci sequences appear so frequently in nature together with their interrelationship with almost any branch of mathematics, has resulted in an intesive research in this area particularly during the last two decades. One of the most wide extensions of the Fibonacci sequence is provided by the Fibonacci polynomials of order k. The study of these polynomials and thier relation with probability is the main part of this dissertation. The probability distribution of the r.v. Xk, where Xk denotes the number of trials until the occurrence of the kth consecutive success in indipendent trials, thas been called "Fibonacci Probability Distribution". The relation between the Fibonacci Distribution and the Fibonacci polynomials led to generalized probability distributions (Geometric, Negative binomial, Poisson and Compound poisson) which consists the second major part of this study.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:29:21Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 5039.pdf: 1656112 bytes, checksum: cefb288f9af3da8df733464289c391d8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-23 / One of the important consequences of trigonometry is the ratio that exists between sides of similar triangles. Such reason appears frequently in many everyday problems and can be quite explored in the classroom. The aim of this study was to explore the trigonometric ratio in the right triangle. The working hypothesis was that the ratios between sides are constant. So the approach was carried out in two ways: one using ruler and protractor and the other with the free software of dynamic geometry called Geogebra. The proposed activities were implemented in a classroom of the 3rd year of high school in the city of Franca, São Paulo State and the Didactic Engineering was used as a research methodology. In both steps of the implementation of the project the expected results have been achieved successfully, however, in the second stage, the use of the software was a motivator of the activity, not only facilitating the visualization of buildings, but also providing the exact value of the reason. Throughout the project implementation a number of other themes could be explored, such as the metric system and the error in the approximations. The use of information technology in the classroom contributed so that classes would be more dynamic and the students more motivated. It is hoped that the material presented here may be useful for other teachers employ in their classes or tailor it to other contents. It is expected that this work will stimulate other teachers to use the technological resources as tools to support teaching.

PN-triangle tessellation using Geometry shaders : The effect on rendering speed compared to the fixed function tessellator

Löwgren, Martin, Olin, Niklas January 2010 (has links)
With each computer game generation there is always a demand for more visually pleasing environments. This pushes game developers to create more powerful rendering techniques and game artists to create more detailed art. With a visually stunning backdrop also comes the need for high-resolution models. A common issue is that if all models in a scene are high-resolution it would not only require immensely powerful hardware, it would also be wasteful as only the models in the foreground are close enough that we would recognize the increased details. The common solution to this problem has been to load several versions of each model containing varying amounts of detail. However this solution has the drawback that it increases our memory footprints as more models are loaded into the memory. Tessellation offers a more dynamic solution to the problem as it only requires us to load a low-resolution model and higher resolution versions can be generated during run-time on the GPU. With the introduction of DirectX 11 tessellation is now supported in the hardware, however we are still a few years away from seeing DirectX 11 being used as the core of any 3D rendering engine. In a transitional period like this between hardware generations game developers has to tackle the dilemma that the current hardware generation has to be supported when creating games that will also utilize the next generation. This thesis focuses on comparing the performance of a tessellation scheme supported by the current hardware generation, DirectX 10, as opposed to a scheme developed for the next generation, DirectX 11. Two prototypes, one using the Geometry shader that was introduced in DirectX 10 and the other using the fixed function tessellator introduced in DirectX 11, were built to compare the performance of tessellated model rendering. Several different variants of each prototype were tested and the general conclusion is that the tessellator performed better than the Geometry shader.
