[en] RAIN ATTENUATION TIME SERIES SYNTHESIZERS FOR TERRESTRIAL LINKS / [pt] SINTETIZAÇÃO DE SÉRIES TEMPORAIS DE ATENUAÇÃO POR CHUVAS EM ENLACES TERRESTRESFERNANDO JOSE DE ALMEIDA ANDRADE 19 January 2011 (has links)
[en] Rain attenuation is the main cause of unavailability in fixed terrestrial radio systems operating at frequency of above 10 GHz in tropical areas. Propagation impairments are expected to be quite severe in these regions. Due to these adverse propagation conditions, Fade Mitigating Techniques (FMT) are often needed. To design and optimize FMT, the knowledge of the cumulative distribution of rain attenuation and of the dynamic behavior of the propagation channel, as provided by fade durations and fade slope statistics, is required. This need can be fulfilled by the introduction of time series of propagation impairments in system simulation. If real data collected from propagation experiments are not available, typical fading time-series may be generated making use of climatologic characteristics as well as geometrical and radiowave parameters of the link. Three models for long-term rain attenuation time series synthesizers are presented and tested in this work using data measured in five terrestrial radio links operating at 15 GHz. The first one was originally developed for satellite systems in temperate climates whereas the second one is a modified version proposed in this work for terrestrial links in tropical areas. A third model is proposed in this work and is based on a different approach using the Gamma distribution. Time series were synthesized by the three models and stationary and dynamic statistics between synthesized and experimental data were compared. The first two models provide good results in some cases but the third model provides significantly better results for cumulative distributions of attenuation and fade-slope.

regiões do Brasil,
realizadas no período de desenvolvimento deste trabalho,
além de medidas de
várias partes do mundo, disponíveis no banco de dados de
propagação da União
Internacional de Telecomunicações (UIT-R). Os modelos
desenvolvidos
região do enlace. Embora existam diversos modelos
reais. / [en] The development of new technologies for broadband wireless
access, using
increasingly higher frequencies, points to the necessity
of more accurate methods
for rain attenuation, that represents the most serious
impairment for radio systems
operating in frequencies above 10 GHz. This work presents
semi-empirical
models for the prediction of rain attenuation in
terrestrial and satellite links. The
models were developed using data obtained in concurrent
measurements of rain
attenuation and point rainfall rate in different regions
of Brazil. Some of these
measurements were performed as part of this work and some
were already
available from previous measurements campaigns. Data
available in the UIT-R
data banks of propagation measurements were also used, in
order to develop
global methods. The models that have been developed allow
the prediction of the
cumulative probability distribution of rain attenuation
from the cumulative
distribution of point rainfall rate in the region of the
link. Although several
methods with these purpose can be found in the technical
literature, the ones
developed in this work present some important features
that are not found, as a
whole, in any of those models: they use the full rainfall
rate distribution over the
entire range of time percentages of interest; the
terrestrial and satellite models are
consistent, that is, the elements used in the terrestrial
prediction model are kept in
the satellite prediction model that involves a mor complex
geometry. Besides that,
the models proposed show an excelent performance in terms
of prediction error,
when compared with measured data.

[en] FOG AND RAIN ATTENUATION MODELS FOR THE DESIGN OF FSO LINKS IN 5G+ / [pt] MODELOS DE ATENUAÇÃO DE NEBLINA E CHUVA PARA O PROJETO DE ENLACES FSO EM 5G+CLARA ELIZABETH VERDUGO MUNOZ 22 August 2022 (has links)
disponibilidade sob quatro condições climáticas: (i) somente chuva, (ii) somente
neblina, (iii) chuva e neblina, e (iv) e todas as condições. Finalmente, eventos
do efeito atmosférico estudado: chuva estratiforme, chuva convectiva, chuva
leve, vento, neblina pesada, neve e outros. / [en] Free-space optics (FSO), initially studied in the 60s, is attracting attention in the frame of 5G+ systems, which demands wireless back-hauling
technologies with extremely high data rates over distances up to a few kilometers. The current lack of a global path loss model for FSO motivates studying
the optical link s behavior under different atmospheric conditions. This thesis deals with the development of models for predicting the attenuation due
to fog and rain for designing FSO links in 5G and beyond technologies. We
study extensive surface measurement databases worldwide as a benchmark for
analyzing FSO responses considering available long-term data. We find that
the highest impact on visibility worldwide is caused by fog, snow, and rain.
Thus, we select fog and rain as the focus of this study. Several path loss models
based on visibility are assessed. We propose lower and upper-bound models to
estimate the specific attenuation, gamma, due to fog which considers uncertainties
as the sensitivity of gamma to the visibility at 1.550 µm and a micro-physical model
of fog. Regarding attenuation caused by rain, we study models available in the
literature for microwave links and modify them for application to FSO. When
the multiple scattering effects are considered, a significant reduction in the
rain attenuation has been found. From the findings, we build a method to statistically combine the attenuation effects on FSO caused by different weather
conditions. The performance of FSO links is assessed in terms of the maximum
link range against availability under four weather conditions: (i) rain only, (ii)
fog only, (iii) rain and fog, and (iv) all conditions. Finally, experimental events
for FSO and mmWave links implemented at Leonardo Campus of Politecnico
di Milano are classified and analyzed depending on the studied atmospheric
effects: stratiform rain, convective rain, light rain, wind, heavy fog, snow, and
others.

[en] DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF RAIN ATTENUATION IN TROPICAL REGIONS / [pt] ANÁLISE DA DINÂMICA DA ATENUAÇÃO POR CHUVAS EM REGIÕES TROPICAISMARIA CRISTINA QUESNEL DE FLAINVILLE RAMOS 09 July 2008 (has links)
[en] The main effect causing non-availability in radio
communication systems
operating in frequencies above 10GHz, is the rain
attenuation, particularly the heavy
convective rain that is predominant in tropical regions.
This thesis presents a detailed
study and modelling of the dynamics of rain attenuation in
terrestrial links and earthspace
links, based on data obtained in long-term experimental
measurements in Brazil.
The dynamic aspects of rain attenuation can be described by
probability distribution
functions of three variables: the rate of change of the
attenuation with time (fade slope),
the number of events of a certain level of attenuation to
be exceeded and the individual
duration of these events. In other words, the level
crossing applied to the attenuation
time series. In contrast to the cumulative distribution of
the attenuation, from which
limited information can effectively be obtained, the
separate statistical analysis of each
level of attenuation can provide a complete understanding
of the phenomenon, allowing
the development of adaptive power control techniques,
methods for signal adaptation
using codes, modulation or bits rate and the design of
spacial, routing, site and time
diversity strategies. The work is based on rain attenuation
data measured in terrestrial
and earth-space links operating at frequencies above 10 GHz
in 6 Brazilian locations.
The study includes the analysis and modelling of the
statistical behaviour of the rate of
variation of the attenuation with time and the event
durations. Also considered, is the
level crossing problem applied to the availability concept.
As mentioned, the
information obtained from the dynamic analysis results and
modelling can be used for
the treatment of various fundamental problems in the radio
communication system
project. A contribution to increase the database of dynamic
attenuation mainly in
tropical and equatorial climates, where data is scarce, is
also a result of this thesis.

[en] PROPAGATION EFFECTS IN LOW EARTH ORBIT SATTELITE LINKS / [pt] MODELAMENTO DE EFEITOS DE PROPAGAÇÃO EM ENLACES SATÉLITE DE ÓRBITA BAIXAMARTA PUDWELL CHAVES DE ALMEIDA 02 December 2003 (has links)
variante no tempo.
desenvolvido e a simulação. / [en] Rain attenuation is the most important propagation effect
to be taken into account in the performance calculation for
satellite systems operation at frequencies above 10 GHz.
The technological evolution of such systems and the
need for personal communication systems with global
coverage lead to the use of low earth orbit communication
systems, that not only have shorter propagation
delays but also allow the use of lower transmission power
than the traditional geostationary systems. Low earth orbit
(LEO) satellites have altitudes around 1.000 Km and are in
motion relatively to the earth stations. This mobility
requires a new approach to the problem of rain attenuation
prediction, particularly the need for a prediction model
that takes into account the elevation angle variability.
In this work, an improved rain attenuation prediction
method for the geostationary case has been developed as a
starting point for the analysis of the nongeostationary
case. Then, the rain attenuation in the a LEO system has
been simulated using measured data from fixed system
systems and the satellite constellation model. A general
method for slant path rain attenuation prediction
considering variable elevation angles is proposed. The
method uses the histogram of the elevation angles to weight
the distributions obtained for fixed elevation. The method
has been tested with simulations performed for the
Globalstar LEO system and a very good agreement was
obtained.

[en] New techniques of urban drainage have emerged in order to mitigate the negative effects of urbanization. Initially, in the United States in 1970 denominated Best Management Practices (BMPs) and then in United Kingdom in 1980 as Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). The goal of these techniques is to reproduce the natural hydrological cycle, mitigating flood peaks and reducing diffuse pollution through infiltration, retention and transport devices such as green roofs, percolation trenches and pervious pavements. (Canholi, 2014). Unlike traditional pavements, pervious pavements allow the infiltration of rainwater on the surface. The infiltrated water is stored temporarily before use, infiltration into the soil, or downstream controlled discharge. According to Field et al (1982) and Mullaney and Lucke (2013), all types of pervious pavement share the same objectives, which are: to allow the infiltration of water on its surface; reduce the increase in the rate and volume of runoff; and improve degradation of water quality resulting from urbanization and land use change. Depending on the soil permeability, they still have the advantage of allowing the recharge of the aquifers.

[en] A EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF AROMATIC PRECURSORS AND SOOT DISTRIBUTION FOR A LAMINAR ETHYLENE COFLOW DIFFUSION FLAME / [pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DA DISTRIBUIÇÃO DE FULIGEM E DE HIDROCARBONETOS AROMÁTICOS POLICÍCLICOS EM CHAMAS LAMINARES NÃO PRÉ-MISTURADAS DE ETILENO E DE ARJUAN JOSE CRUZ VILLANUEVA 01 March 2018 (has links)
[en] This work presents an experimental study of soot and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) distribution in axisymmetric ethylene-air non-premixe laminar flames using spectroscopic diagnostic in a co-flow target burner. For this purpose, are applied laser-induced fluorescence and laser-induced incandescence techniques with UV excitation. Spectral detection bands centered at 340, 400, 450, 500, 550 nm are employed to characterize PAH, using the infrared fluorescence spectra displacement phenomenon with the molecular mass increase. The incandescence is captured at 400 nm and the laser extinction technique is used to calibrate the signal, and, thus to obtain the soot volume fraction at the reaction zone. The soot spontaneous emitted radiation is used to measure the temperature by the two-color pyrometry technique. The comparison between results with prompt (0 ns) and delayed (50 ns) detection, with respect to the laser pulse, allows to discriminate the regions between soot precursors (PAH) and soot. The results show that, in the colder region, near the fuel inlet, PAH exist only. Following this region, in an intermediate warmer zone, both soot and PAH appear to coexist until the point of maximum integral soot volumetric fraction. A vertical displacement of the fluorescence distribution with increasing detection wavelength is observed, which is consistent with PAH size growth and with its progressive transformation into soot. PAH and soot distribution are investigated as a function of the fuel flow rate. The soot volumetric fraction exhibits a classical distribution, whose value increases with the fuel flow rate, whereas the measured temperature decreases, exhibiting a singular behavior in the region where the soot is formed.
