1878-1912. / Srednje srpske škole u osmanskom carstvu 1878-1912. / Serbian Secondary Schools in the Ottoman Empire(1878-1912)

Novakov Aleksandra 02 March 2015 (has links)
The best way for Serbian<br />people to preserve their national identity was by opening schools,<br />elementary and secondary ones, establishing book shops and<br />printing schoolbooks, and through the activity of ecclesiasticalschooling<br />communities.<br />The thesis deals with history of Serbian secondary<br />schools in the Ottoman Empire. There were six of them:<br />Seminary in Prizren (1871&ndash;1912), Serbian gymnasium in<br />Istanbul (1893&ndash;1902), Serbian gymnasium &ldquo;Dom nauke&rdquo; (Home<br />of Science) in Thessalonica (1894&ndash;1910), Serbian male<br />gymnasium in Skoplje (1894-1912), Serbian male gymnasium in<br />Bitolj (1897&ndash;1912) and Serbian gymnasium in Pljevlja (1901&ndash;<br />1912). The thesis explores the matter of foundation these schools<br />and their development in particular chronological framework.<br />Nevertheless, the thesis researches the schools&rsquo; syllabi and<br />curricula, their structure, social and ethnic background of their<br />students, students&rsquo; age and number, as well as their students&rsquo;<br />later role in society. Special attention is given to the schools&rsquo;<br />teachers, especially their rectors - directors, and a great portion<br />of the thesis deals with revealing parts of their biographies.<br />The establishment and activity of Serbian lower and<br />higher gymnasiums could be considered one of the greatest<br />achievements of Serbs in the Ottoman Empire. The Seminary in<br />Prizren was a school not only for education of priests, but also<br />teachers, who were in high demand in Old Serbia and<br />Macedonia. Founding this seminary enabled the creation of an<br />educated class of teachers who were subsequently opening new<br />schools. Also, the seminary provided literate priests who were<br />baptising, marrying Serbs and influencing the people to stay in<br />the Orthodox religion, thus slowing down the process of<br />Islamisation, which especially in Kosovo and Metohija often<br />meant denationalisation. First Serbian secondary school in the<br />Ottoman Empire was the Serbian gymnasium in Istanbul. Her<br />goal, beside education and upbringing, was to serve as a<br />paradigm for opening of other secondary schools within the<br />Ottoman Empire. Serbian gymnasium &ldquo;Dom nauke&rdquo; was<br />established in Thessalonica, which was the centre of the vilayet.<br />Its opening accelerated the issuing of licence for other<br />elementary schools around the Vilayet of Thessalonica. Serbian<br />male gymnasium in Skoplje was only opened after a long and<br />expensive diplomatic struggle with the Ottoman authorities. The<br />opponents of its opening were the centres for national<br />propaganda of other states (Bulgaria, Greece). For Serbs in the<br />Vilayet of Bitolj opening of lower Serbian gymnasium in Bitolj<br />marked an important turning point both in educational and<br />political sense. Serbian gymnasium in Pljevlja was the oldest<br />secular secondary school in the Metropolitanate of Ra&scaron;ka-<br />Prizren. The gymnasium became cultural and educational centre<br />which educated local Serbian intelligence, and presented a<br />counterpart to Austro-Hungarian influence.</p>

A legal and historical study of latin Catholic Church properties in Istanbul from the Ottoman conquest of 1453 until 1740 / Une étude juridique et historique des propriétés de l'Église catholique latine à Istanbul de la conquête ottomane de 1453 jusqu’à 1740

Obaldia, Vanessa de 18 December 2018 (has links)
This doctoral thesis addresses the subjects of Latin Catholic ecclesiastical properties and their affiliated religious orders in Istanbul’s traditionally Christian districts of Galata and Pera from the perspective of Ottoman legal doctrine and practice. These themes are explored primarily through Ottoman primary sources from the conventual archives of the Dominicans of SS. Peter and Paul in Galata and of the Capuchins of St. Louis of the French in Pera. Part I situates the Latin Catholic community, religious orders and properties in terms of their location, demographics, legal status and representatives. Part II presents an overview of the land and property rights of minorities in Galata in general and of Latin Catholic ecclesiastical properties in particular. Part III examines three property disputes as well as the conceptual and practical implications of the Christian vakıf. Part IV focuses on the diplomatic role played by France and its influence over the churches’ affairs.

Body Builder

Yurga, Emre 18 December 2009 (has links)
My thesis is a critical essay thematically focused on the fate of the body in the postmodern condition. In this thesis a fundamental question is posed: What happens to the (postmodern) body under the double pressure of postmodern technology and culture? Is the postmodern body altered under the pressure of postmodern technology and culture? How contemporary thought and architecture impact the body will also be examined. This thesis discusses the above questions through several key concepts such as exilic conditions, heterotopias and ‘trans’ states of being. After elaborating on these issues, this thesis attempts to design an architectural project “Hamam Complex” on a unique natural island in the Bosporus strait that separates the Western and Eastern worlds.

The Anti/alternative-globalization Movement: A Case Study On Turkey

Ergul-yilmaz, Mujgan 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the framing processes within the Anti/Alternative-Globalization Movement through a case study on Turkey. The purpose of the study is to supply a descriptive analysis of the diagnostic and prognostic framing processes within the movement which identify the targets, goals and the strategies of action for the movement. This is an exploratory research based on a purposive sample achieved through snowball sampling and qualitative data gathered through semi-structured interviews. The movement in Turkey has not been able to propose a concrete goal for the movement. The participating organizations or activists have different visualizations of the &ldquo / alternative futures&rdquo / they are fighting for / there is no consensus on the strategies of action to be followed, but there is a belief in an evolutionary &ldquo / becoming&rdquo / process which eventually will provide a totally new alternative. There are many frame contestations besides power claims existing within the movement / however, there are two major consensus points supplying the basis of solidarity within the movement: According to the movement the cause of the current discontent within the world&rsquo / s societies is globalization, which is mostly equated to neoliberalism or capitalism, and secondly the movement is seen as being able to shape a better future. It is possible to conclude that the movement has a potential tobring about concrete social changes, and therefore the new organizational forms and strategies of action -developed within the movement- which do not fit to the existing conceptions of the social movement literature should be evaluated with different theoretical perspectives.

Ombasic, Maya 08 1900 (has links)
Istanbul is for Pamuk what Paris is for Baudelaire: an inexhaustible source of inspiration and spleen. But, if the French poet is more conscious of his states of mind, the most widely read contemporary Turkish novelist seems at first to deliberately disregard the fact that any discourse on the external world is also a discourse about himself. At first, in emulation of other Turkish novelists, Pamuk seems to thoroughly enjoy mapping the hüzün, the much talked about collective feeling of melancholy, reputed to be intrinsic to the city and its ruins. Nevertheless, as soon as Pamuk starts to follow in the footsteps of foreign writers and artists who have visited Istanbul, he notices that the apparent melancholy of the ruins is only one layer among many fluid layers. While following the tracks of the otherness, Pamuk discovers the heterogeneous character of his city but also of himself and notices that the collective melancholy widely accepted by most his compatriots is fabricated by a certain socio-political narrative, within a specific social class. Indeed, by tracking the reflections of his own imaginative twin, the novelist is suddenly aware of the elusiveness of his own subjectivity but also of the world and the others. If such is the case, the urban space that preoccupies and obsesses Pamuk is only a reflection of his mind and the will to fully access to the presence, is nothing but an illusion. As if the disturbing uncanny of his unconscious, by revealing the elusive side of the world and the self, encourages Pamuk to challenge a number of views and opinions taken for granted, inside his own culture but also inside the culture of the other, his European twin. For, if everything is fluid and malleable, there is no reason not to question everything, including tradition and state politics, the latter making him, "a person well more political, serious and responsible that I am and ever whished to be". Thus, Istanbul: memoires and the city questions the relationship between the subjectivity and the heterogeneous layers of Istanbul in order to come to a deconstructionist conclusion: everything is a substitute; there is a general absence of sense. If the city lacks a tangible raison d’être or sense in its history and topography, then it must be the same in places that are far from Istanbul. Thus central characters in The House of the Silence question not only the very foundation of their identity and subjectivity, but also the relationship between tradition and modernity, center and periphery, East and West, not to mention the destructive and ephemeral nature of time and space. In Pamuk’s most recent novel, The Museum of Innocence, the protagonist engages in an even more obsessive and destructive quest for another kind of space and time — an imaginary in-between space allowing for a seamless traffic between reality and fiction, East and West, and tradition and modernity. This in-between space or identity clearly anchors Pamuk among the most interesting postmodern novelists of our time. But, this in-between positionality, however, can only be attained at a price: Pamuk’s work, illuminating insight or a precarious balance is more often than not achieved through the sacrifice of the female figure.

Immigrant Domestic Women Workers In Ankara And Istanbul

Celik, Nihal 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study focuses on the relationship between global economy and women&rsquo / s labor within a feminist standpoint by examining the personal and occupational experiences of immigrant women doing domestic work in Turkey. The main concern of this study is to investigate how working and living experiences of immigrant domestic women workers in Turkey are shaped by their illegal worker and immigrant status. The aim of this study is to listen to the personal experiences of immigrant domestic women workers from themselves, and understand their working conditions and social life experiences in Turkey. There emerged a trend in trading domestic workers between the poor and rich countries since 1990s where many parties, including governments, illegal recruitment agencies, and individual employers benefited. The high unemployment, poverty, shortfalls in living standards, and loss of government-sponsored public services due to the IMF policies implemented by the governments of developing countries severely affected poor and women. For their family survival, women of developing countries forced to migrate in order to seek domestic work in richer countries, where there is a high demand of middle class women for domestic workers. On the other hand, since domestic work is devalued as informal work, policy-makers do not pay sufficient attention, and provide a legal framework regulating the recruitment process and protecting the rights of immigrant domestic women workers. Therefore, immigrant domestic women workers are in a vulnerable position and open to exploitation due to their illegal and immigrant status. Turkey has been one of the domestic worker exporting countries since early 1990s mostly from post-Soviet countries. However, she neither has bilateral agreements with the sending countries nor a legal framework protecting the rights of immigrant domestic women workers. Hence, immigrant women are subject to arbitrary treatment and exploitation both in their workplace and outside, and remained invisible.

Proměna městské části Pera na kulturní čtvrt Istanbulu (v druhé polovině 19. století) / Transformatıon of Pera into Cultural District of Istanbul in the second half of the 19th Century

Bayram, Muhammet Sami January 2016 (has links)
The second half of the 19th Century was a remarkable period in the history of the transformation of Istanbul's Pera district, which can also be detected in the history of its western type theatre buildings, passages, cultural activities, district regulations, planning and establishment of other public and private spaces. The scope of the study will focus on the period between the announcement of the Edict of Gulhane (1839) till Second Constitutional Era (1908). I have chosen the Pera district, also known as Beyoğlu/Taksim for this case study, because it had quite specific functions in the city. It had hosted various ethnical groups throughout its long history, which was also the case in the middle of the 19th century, and the cultural harmony influenced the district's social life. I intend to test this hypothesis by applying Charles Landry's creativity city concept with Pera's cultural district at the end of the thesis. I will apply the aforementioned concepts and examine the remarkable modern type constructions of the district and their history. I will show that gradual growth of the amount and intensity of interactions between the West and the Ottoman Society created a cultural infrastructure, which in turn created a cosmopolitan area in Pera. Social and daily life started to change with the...

Water and Wastewater Management in the Mega City Istanbul : A General Analysis from a Supply-Demand-Reuse Perspective

Mutailifu, Kalibeinuer January 2019 (has links)
With a population of over 13 million, Istanbul is one of the biggest city in Europe. The possible increase of population in the future may bring serious problems of water supply after a few decades. Therefore, it is crucial to look for good solutions to problems and potential challenges in water supply and water demand. This paper intended to investigate the currently existing problems in water and wastewater management practices in Istanbul from a supply-demand-reuse perspective; and to look for possible opportunities for a future improvement in order to achieve a sustainable urban water management system in Istanbul by promoting its wastewater management system. In this paper, two interviews of professionals, and a survey in Istanbul city area were conducted for obtaining gather primary data. Analysis of relative literatures is applied for grasping an accurate picture of water and wastewater management in Istanbul. According to the study, authorities are making great efforts to meet the ever increasing demand for water. From a supply-demand-reuse management perspective, Istanbul is still at the stage of supply management with sufficient wastewater treatment. However, there is not much sign of a demand management model, as inadequate effort has been devoted to controlling the increase of water demand. Although reuse management may still be a distant goal for Istanbul to achieve, a good preparation can be started by promoting and further improving the current wastewater management system, as wastewater reuse, if properly managed, will be the best solution that will lead to achieving long-term benefits.
