Previous issue date: 2009-02-10 / The subject of this dissertation is the study of plants carried on by Alexandre
Rodrigues Ferreira (1756-1815) during his journey to Rio Negro between 1783 and
1786. The objectives were to gather plants references contained in the trip diaries, as
well as in botanic memories written by the author, in the attempt to establish the
disciplinary record that guided the naturalist s look.
The first chapter brings the biographical aspects of Alexandre Rodrigues
Ferreira, his graduation at Coimbra, his planning for the philosophical journey in the
context of the introduction of modern science in Portugal, as well as the destination
given to the naturalist´s work. The second chapter discourses upon the History of
Botany with the purpose of situating the reader in the scientific context in which the
naturalist was in, namely the XVIIIth Century s Portugal. In this same chapter is made
an analysis of the minor botany memories left by the naturalist. The third chapter brings
a discussion supported by information we gathered from plants references made by
Alexandre Ferreira in his Diary of the Philosophical Journey to Rio Negro. At the end,
in our Final Considerations, we present the conclusions based on the results achieved
in our analysis.
Along our research we identified the aspects referred by the naturalist to
describe the plants according to several disciplinary records. The methodology used
consisted in marking all Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira references about plants and
indicate which current knowledge context we believe they fit in. We found Alexandre
Rodrigues Ferreira references to plants according to the following areas and subareas:
Botany (morphology, physiology, and identification), Agriculture (food, planting,
economy/production, and general comments), Medicine (medicinal plants) and General
(food, drinks, construction, furniture, objects, clothing, textile, dye, no cultivated plants,
conservation and general comments). Our research allowed us to identify this mix of
approaches, bringing into attention, quantitatively, the agricultural focus. In our
opinion, Alexandre´s records were according to his background at
Coimbra University, as well as in tune with the botanical production of the period / O objeto desta dissertação é o estudo das plantas realizado por Alexandre
Rodrigues Ferreira (1756-1815) durante viagem realizada ao Rio Negro entre os anos
1783 e 1786. Os objetivos foram os de realizar um levantamento das menções a
plantas presentes dos diários dessa viagem, bem como em memórias botânicas
escritas pelo autor, procurando estabelecer por quais registros disciplinares guiava-se
o olhar do naturalista.
O primeiro capítulo aborda aspectos biográficos de Alexandre Rodrigues
Ferreira, a sua formação em Coimbra, o planejamento da viagem filosófica no
contexto da introdução das ciências modernas em Portugal, bem como o destino dos
trabalhos realizados pelo naturalista. O segundo capítulo apresenta um panorama da
História da Botânica com a intenção de situar o leitor no contexto científico em que
estava inserido o naturalista, principalmente em Portugal no século XVIII. Nesse
mesmo capítulo é feita uma análise dos conteúdos de pequeninas Memórias de
Botânica deixadas pelo naturalista. O terceiro capítulo traz uma discussão, alimentada
e permeada pelo levantamento que realizamos das menções a plantas feitas por
Alexandre em seu Diário da Viagem Filosófica ao Rio Negro. Ao final, nas
Considerações Finais, indicamos as conclusões derivadas dos resultados alcançados
ao longo de nossa análise.
Em nossa pesquisa, identificamos os aspectos utilizados pelo naturalista para
descrever as plantas de acordo com diversos registros disciplinares. A nossa
metodologia consistiu em marcar todas as menções feitas por Alexandre Rodrigues
Ferreira sobre plantas e identificar uma esfera atual do conhecimento à qual
acreditamos pertencerem. Encontramos menções de Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira às
plantas segundo as seguintes áreas e subáreas: Botânica (morfologia, fisiologia,
identificação), Agricultura (alimentação, plantação, economia/produtividade,
comentários gerais), Medicina (plantas medicinais) e Geral (alimentação, bebidas,
construção, móveis, objetos, adornos/vestimentas, têxteis, tintura, plantas não
cultivadas, conservação e comentários gerais). O nosso levantamento permitiu
identificar essa mescla de abordagens, destacando-se, quantitativamente, o enfoque
agrícola. A nosso ver, os relatos de Alexandre mostram que seu trabalho estava de
acordo com a formação que ele recebeu na Universidade de Coimbra, bem como em
consonância com a produção botânica de sua época

Osvaldo Sánchez's Art Criticism: An Aesthetics of ReconciliationPérez-Rementería, Dinorah 01 January 2010 (has links)
Aesthetic criticism very often has been overlooked and considered a lesser form. However, many interpretations, applications and discernments can be obtained from this kind of art writing. Using Osvaldo Sánchez's work as a case study, this thesis examines how writerly art criticism offers an active reading framework of the work of art by using philosophical, literary and poetic constructions. In this regard, I will see how the "writerly" condition has contributed compelling insights to the History of Aesthetics, highlighting the connections and disconnections between Sánchez and other writerly critics, which demonstrates the significance of developing a flexible, available and aesthetic learning model of art appreciation. I will analyze as well various models of experience, subjective and objective, that release certain "openness" as a premise for their existences. Here are included the Kantian sublime, Heidegger's ontological Being, the surrealist cultivation of chance, Kaprow's happenings, and the attitude of disinterest developed by the vanishing poets as defended by the scholar Rafael Hernández Rodríguez. I will show that, by choosing an accommodating approach to discover forms of knowledge, an assortment of valuable empirical content can be found. Finally, I investigate the writerly work of Cuban critic Osvaldo Sánchez that does not adopt a fixed critical pattern. Instead, Sánchez's art writing passes through fields, providing us with a heuristic methodology in which the aesthetic emerges not as a preconditioned set of principles/procedures, but as a true lived experience.

Goethe's Vision of Natur during the Italian JourneyEwing, John Paul 2009 December 1900 (has links)
The following project will examine the scientific, metaphysical, and aesthetic
themes connected to Goethe's vision of Natur during and surrounding the years of his
famed Italian Journey. Goethe's progressing conceptualization of the Urpflanze during
this period, as witnessed in his autobiographical Italienische Reise and the Versuch, die
Metamorphose der Pflanzen zu erklaren, will be of special concern because of its
pertinence to a number of vital natural scientific themes in Goethe's scientific work. I
will also trace the progression of these themes over time as seen in Goethe's related
theories of the intermaxillary bone and of the morphology of plant organs so as to
maintain that the Italian Journey may be seen as a period not only of literary
revitalization as commonly cited, but also of scientific progress in connection with
Goethe's deepening understanding of Natur as well as its inherent laws and archetypal
nature.
The first chapter will introduce the project's problem in detail as well as the
textual and critical obstructions associated with the project. I will maintain in Chapter II
that Goethe's biography during the 1780s shows a systematic progression in the
understanding of Natur in his scientific projects and in the Reise, which also helps to demonstrate that Goethe's Journey was a period during which Goethe was able to
develop, in greater detail than heretofore, his metaphysical vision of Natur. In Chapter
III, I will investigate the primary textual material on Goethe?s notion of the Urpflanze
within the Italienische Reise and its resulting extension in his 1790 study of plant
morphology, the Metamorphose der Pflanzen. Chapter IV will discuss the topic of the
Eins in Nature and anschauende Urteilskraft as detected in Goethe's scientific writings.
Chapter V will continue and conclude this argument by linking Richards' argument
regarding "Romantic biologists" to Goethe?s natural science during the time of the
Italian Journey, thus making a connection between Kunst and Natur in the Italienische
Reise and in Goethe's scientific projects during and surrounding the Journey.

La route qui mène au crime : déterminants de la mobilité des infracteurs de Gatineau en 2006Vanier, Mathieu 10 1900 (has links)
Cette étude porte sur la distance parcourue pour commettre un crime à Gatineau en 2006. Peu d’études canadiennes récentes ont porté sur le sujet. De plus, il existe un vide de connaissances sur la mobilité des délinquants dans les petites villes et les banlieues. La présente recherche vise à comparer trois mesures de distance différentes, à vérifier si la distance parcourue varie en fonction du type de crime et à voir si les variables de temps (jour de la semaine, moment de la journée et saison) de même que certaines caractéristiques des suspects (âge, sexe et lieu de résidence) ont un impact sur la distance parcourue. Pour chaque crime, l’adresse du suspect et le lieu du crime ont été géocodées pour ensuite calculer la distance entre les deux points. Il ressort de l’analyse de la forme des courbes de distances que seules les agressions sexuelles présentent une zone tampon. Les résultats des analyses statistiques indiquent que les jeunes sont plus mobiles que les suspects plus âgés et que les hommes parcourent une distance plus élevée que les femmes. Étonnement, la distance parcourue ne diffère pas significativement selon la saison et le moment de la journée. Enfin, comparativement aux autres criminels, les délinquants qui ont commis un vol qualifié sont ceux qui ont parcouru les plus grandes distances. / This study focuses on the journey to crime of the offenders who have committed a crime in Gatineau in 2006. There are only a few recent Canadian studies on the subject. In addition there is a vacuum of knowledge on the journey to crime in smaller cities and suburbs. This research is designed to compare three different measures of distance, to check if the distance varies depending on the type of crime and see if the variables of time (day of week, time of day and season) as well as some characteristics of suspects (age, sex and place of residence) have an impact on the distance traveled. For each crime, the address of the suspect and the crime location were geocoded then, the distance between the two points was calculated. An analysis of the shapes curves pattern of the distances indicates that sexual assault is the only type of crime which possesses a buffer zone. The results of statistical analysis show that young people are more mobile than older suspects and that men travel a greater distance than women. Surprisingly, the distance does not differ significantly according to season and time of day. Finally, compared to the other criminal offenders, those who have committed a robbery traveled the greatest distances.

Thesis (MA (English Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This project seeks to analyze the representation of identities in Shiva
Naipaul's travel narrative North of South: An African Journey (1978) as
encoded in the binaries of primitive / traditional; civilized / modern; settler /
native; civic / tribal and neo-colonial / liberated. By analyzing this select series
of identities, this project aims to explore the fractured nature of identity as
constructed in the post-colony. It will argue that the identities are rendered
unstable by the ungrounded nature of the post-colonial space in which they
are located. Naipaul concludes his travel narrative by qualifying the postcolonial
situation as an abortion of Western civilization in the trope of
Conrad's Kurtz. Naipaul implies that any identity in Africa is a simulacrum, a
phantom double, a copy of something that was not there to begin with. He
attempts to articulate the diverse cultures that he encounters as though he
were apart from them without recognizing that he is essentially and
inextricably a part of the various cultural articulations themselves. It is easy to
criticize Naipaul, therefore, as a non-starter. With the advantages of hindsight,
however, it is possible for the contemporary reader to recognize these
instabilities as evidence of the post-modern phenomenon in which reality is
not an absolute. As a modernist writer, Naipaul's efforts to understand these
instabilities of identity as an articulation of culture are circumvented by a
Sisyphean struggle wherein he attempts to establish a sense of ontological
alterity in the narrative yet implicates himself, as well as his invocation of
archival literature and hence his ultimate position of disillusionment,

(in English) The thesis aimed to explore the topos of inn in relation to the topos of journey in fantasy literature. The first step was to define the term fantasy literature with regard to the set of texts selected for the analysis; namely their connection to mythology and fairy tales, genres working with hero's initiation journey. Integral part of the thesis was to consider theoretical works focused on the image of pubs in literature, as well as a short description of the form and function of this topos in other genres. The subject of the analysis were inns from six fictional worlds representing a cross-section of the genre from the half of the 20th century until present time, while the selected examples fall mostly into the sub-genre of epic fantasy. The analysis showed that the inns have four primary functions: hero's intimate space, place of meeting and cognition, place of transformation and place of stories. Each of these functions is connected to a specific part of the initiation journey and represents its beginning, or one of its tests. All these functions are also connected to certain issues related to hero's psychological journey, namely the issue of trust, identity and will. Notre recherche porte sur l’analyse d’un processus spécifique d’apprentissage par le concept d’ingegno du philosophe napolitain Giambattista Vico : La pratique du débat de l’Ecole Gelugpa du bouddhisme tibétain. Dans une première partie, à travers une anthropologie de son geste et de son imaginaire, nous présentons le déploiement de l’ingegno et la dimension transdisciplinaire de cette pratique traditionnelle de formation. Dans une deuxième partie, nous utilisons l’outil AT9 pour faire une lecture herméneutique de l’imaginaire de moines tibétains pratiquant le débat. A travers les projections de soi que constituent les AT9 réalisés, nous cherchons les traces des projections des apprentissages et leur dimension transdisciplinaire. Nous concluons ou plutôt offrons aux praticiens transdisciplinaires, la mise en débat d’un outil transdisciplinaire transformateur des pratiques de formation telles que les nôtres se sont métamorphosées au long cours de notre apprentissage de chercheur / Our research focuses on the analysis of a specific process of learning: The concept of ingegno by the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico: The practice of the debate of the Gelugpa School of Tibetan Buddhism. In the first section, through an anthropology of its gesture and its imagination, we present the deployment of ingegno and transdisciplinary dimension of this traditional practice of education. In the second section, we use the tool AT9 to do a hermeneutic reading from the imagination of the Tibetan monks in the process of discussions. Through the projections themselves, that constitute the AT9 realized, we looked for traces of projections of learning and their transdisciplinary dimension.
