Live food seems to be a source of exogenous enzymes which eases food digestion of fish and crustacean early life stages. The aim of this work was to study alkaline proteases from the harpacticoida copepod Tisbe biminiensis by evaluating the effects of pH, temperature and specific inhibitors on the proteolytic activity. Proteases were also studied by SDS-PAGE and zymograms. Crude extract from T. biminiensis showed a total proteolytic activity of 0.39 mU/mg of protein and tryptic activity of 2.33 mU/mg. Optima pH and temperature were 9.0 and 55oC, respectively. The enzymes were thermostable at temperature ranging from 25 to 50oC. The enzymatic activity was strongly inhibited by the trypsin specific inhibitors TLCK (100%), SBTI (100%) and benzamidine (91%).However, EDTA, PMSF and b mercaptoethanol caused only a slight inhibition (35, 35 and 7%, respectively). The results show that alkaline proteases are present on crude extract of Tisbe biminiensis. The highest effects of trypsin inhibitors on enzyme activity suggest that this enzyme plays an important role in protein digestion. T. biminiensis is an important source of live prey to fish and crustacean larvae in nature and partially replace others live food commonly used in aquaculture because they contribute with both exogenous enzymes for the digestion processes and other nutrients required during development of aquatic animals and contribute to development of aquaculture. / Os copépodos harpacticóides são microcrustáceos que servem como alimento vivo preferencial na natureza para diversas espécies de larvas de organismos aquáticos sendo nutricionalmente superiores quando comparados a outros alimentos vivos comumente utilizados nas larviculturas. O alimento vivo é uma importante fonte de enzimas exógenas que contribui para o processo digestivo dessas larvas que por não estarem com o sistema digestivo completamente formado, dependem das enzimas provenientes do alimento vivo para um melhor aproveitamento dos ingredientes da dieta,apresentando consequentemente melhores desempenhos na taxa de crescimento e sobrevivência. Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar as proteases alcalinas do copépodo harpacticóide Tisbe biminiensis através de parâmetros cinéticos e físico-químicos como: pH e temperatura ótima, efeito de inibidores, estabilidade térmica, além da caracterização eletroforética por SDS-PAGE e zimograma. O extrato bruto do T. biminiensis apresentou uma atividade proteolítica total de 0,39 U/mg de proteínas sendo a atividade tríptica de 2,33 U/mg. A atividade enzimática apresentou uma temperatura ótima de 55ºC e pH ótimo de 9,0 e mostrou-se estável termicamente no intervalo de 25 a 50ºC. A atividade enzimática foi fortemente inibida por inibidores específicos de tripsina, TLCK (100±1%), SBTI (100±2%), benzamidina (91±10%), e não houve inibição significativa com os inibidores: EDTA (35±1%), PMSF (35±1%), b- mercaptoetanol (7±11%). Estes resultados demonstraram que a principal protease alcalina presente no extrato bruto do T. biminiensis foi a tripsina, exercendo importante papel na digestão protéica destes animais e este copépodo pode contribuir como fonte de enzimas exógenas para o processo digestivo nas larvas de organismos aquáticos.

The behavioral effect of laboratory turbulence on copepods

Copepod species are distributed throughout the ocean by many factors, including chemical, biological, and physical effects. Turbulence in the ocean has been suggested as a factor that vertically partitions some species of copepod. Copepods may seek calmer waters by sinking to deeper levels as the surface waters become more turbulent, or may maintain their position in turbulent waters. The goal of this study is to determine the behavioral effects of turbulence on three species of copepod, Calanus finmarchicus, Acartia tonsa, and Temora longicornis. Experiments consisted of exposing each of the species to stagnant water plus four levels of turbulence intensity. The experiments were conducted in a laboratory apparatus that mimics oceanic turbulence. The turbulence characteristics have been previously characterized by particle image velocimetry (PIV), that show the turbulence to be nearly isotropic and homogeneous in the observation region. Behavior responses were quantified via several measures, including the number of animals phototactically aggregating per minute, the number of escape events, the swimming speed, and the net-to-gross-displacement ratio. There are important conclusions about the effect of laboratory turbulence on copepods. The size of the copepod has a significant effect on its aggregation and swimming capability with increasing turbulence. The smaller copepods had less ability to overcome a strong flow field, and they were more likely to be advected by the stronger flow fields. Swim style also can influence how a copepod reacts to increased turbulence. If the copepod is a hop and sink traveler, then the copepod continues to hop and sink more than its cruising counterparts as turbulence increases. The cruise and sink travelers did not alter the number of escapes in response to turbulence.

Lake Winnipeg has been subject to intense eutrophication and invasive species such as Rainbow Smelt and Eubosmina coregoni for the last 40 years. This study demonstrated significant increases in total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chlorophyll-a, overall zooplankton abundance, and specifically Cladocera, between 1969 and the first decade of the 21st century. There were specific basin differences in the long-term changes of the Cladocera community, with the species Chydorus sphaericus and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula negatively affected by high levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll-a. Moreover, long-term change in the Cladocera community composition and abundance throughout the years (1969-2011) during summer was correlated with intensifying eutrophication. Additionally, weak diel vertical migration in the zooplankton community was observed for the first time in Lake Winnipeg.

However, these substances can have health and environmental impacts. We tested the efficacy of two biological methods to control mosquitoes larvae, the copepod (Mesocyclops oggunus) and entomotoxic bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis var, israelensis (Bti). These biological agents were used in isolation and consociated. We also interview endemic control agents that work with Aedes aegpty control in the city of João Pessoa-PB in order to access their perceptions about the uses of biological control against mosquito larvae. We found that the consociation between M. oggunus and Bti is more effective that each method in isolation to control larvae of A. albopictus (a species with similar biology with A. aegpity). Consequently the consociation between copepods and Bti represent a low operational cost and low environmental impact alternative to chemical larvicides in order to control mosquito larvae. Our interviews with endemic control agents involved with Aedes control showed that more efforts are need to inform them about the consequences and precautions associated to the use of chemical larvicides. / Larvicidas químicos artificiais são uma solução comumente utilizada para controlar as larvas de mosquitos. No entanto, essas substâncias podem causar impactos na saúde e no meio ambiente. Testamos a eficácia de dois controladores biológicos para controlar larvas de mosquitos, o copépodo (Mesocyclops ogunnus) e a bactéria entomotóxica Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti). Esses agentes biológicos foram utilizados isoladamente e em consorciação. Foram também realizadas entrevistas com os agentes de controle de endemias que trabalham no controle do Aedes aegypti na cidade de João Pessoa PB a fim de saber suas percepções sobre o uso de controladores biológicos no controle de larvas de mosquitos. Verificamos que a consorciação entre M. ogunnus e o Bti é mais eficaz do que a utilização dessas ferramentas isoladamente para controlar larvas de A. albopictus (uma espécie com a biologia semelhante ao A. aegypti). Dessa forma, a consorciação de copépodos com Bti representa uma alternativa de baixo custo operacional e baixo impacto ambiental a utilização de larvicidas químicos no controle de larvas de mosquitos. As entrevistas com agentes de controle de endemias mostraram que são necessários mais esforços para informá-los sobre as consequências e as precauções associadas ao uso de larvicidas químicos.

Amostras foram coletadas através de arrastos horizontais com rede de plâncton (65μm de abertura de malha) durante o período chuvoso (Julho-Agosto 2010) e seco (Novembro-Dezembro 2010), nos horários diurno e noturno e durante cada fase lunar. Cinqüenta e oito taxa foram identificados. Copepoda com 23 espécies dominou e compôs aproximadamente 50% da comunidade durante o período seco. As espécies mais abundantes foram Euterpina acutifrons, Parvocalanus crassirostris e Oithona hebes. Os maiores valores de densidade foram registrados durante o período seco (10711.19 ± 7131.47 ind.*m-3 ). Embora que foram observadas maiores diferenças quantitativas entre os horários de coleta e as fases lunares, diferenças qualitativas foram observadas. A produção foi considerada baixa e refletiu os padrões da densidade, estando mais elevada no período seco (P. crassirostris 101,62 ± 159,03 μg C m-3 dia-1 ; E. acutifrons 75,75 ± 82,77 μg C m-3 dia-1 ; Oithona hebes 24,77 ± 19,43 μg C m-3 dia-1 ). Não foi observada diferença nos valores de produção entre as fases lunares. Entre os horários, as diferenças estiveram restritas apenas a E. acutifrons. De forma geral pôde-se observar a forte influência sazonal sobre a composição da comunidade do microzooplâncton e produção dos Copepoda do sistema recifal de Tamandaré, no qual a grande ocorrência de espécies estuarinas e costeiras ressalta a interação entre o sistema recifal e os estuários próximos. / This study aimed to analyze the dynamics of the microzooplankton community of the coastal reefs of Tamandaré, PE, to understand the seasonal and diel variations in relation to lunar phases and the main processes influencing the community. Samples were collected by horizontal hauls with a plankton net (65μm mesh size) in the rainy (July-August 2010) and dry (November-December 2010) seasons, during daytime and at night, and during every lunar phase. Fifty-eight taxa were identified. Copepoda, with 23 species, dominated and comprised nearly 50% of the community during the dry season. The most abundant species were Euterpina acutifrons and Parvocalanus crassirostris. Higher densities were registered during the dry season (10711.19 ± 7131.47 ind.*m-3 ). Although major quantitative differences were not observed between collection times and lunar phases, qualitative differences were observed. The secondary production was considered low, and followed the density pattern, being higher during the dry season (P. crassirostris 101,62 ± 159,03 μg C m-3 dia-1 ; E. acutifrons 75,75 ± 82,77 μg C m-3 dia-1 ; Oithona hebes 24,77 ± 19,43 μg C m-3 dia-1 ). Differences between the lunar phases were absent, and differences between the daytime and nighttime were restricted to E. acutifrons. The overall results showed the strong seasonality influence over the copepods community, both in terms of composition and production. The dominance of estuarine and coastal species indicates the connection between the reef system and adjacent estuaries.

New Zealand Calanoid Copepod Invasions: Has Artificial Lake Construction Facilitated Invasions, and are our Coastal Waters Uninvaded?

Non-indigenous species have become a global issue of increasing importance in recent years, with many causing significant environmental and economic damage. Identifying locations vulnerable to invasion allows for focus of management efforts towards prevention of invasions at those locations. In order to determine whether constructed water bodies, such as reservoirs, ornamental lakes or retired mines, are more easily invaded environments than natural water bodies, owing to decreased biotic resistance, the distributions of native and non-indigenous freshwater calanoid copepod species in the North Island were examined. Calanoid copepods in ports and other coastal environments were also examined, in order to determine whether ports are more frequently invaded owing to increased propagule supplies from visiting ships and other sources. The distributions of the native freshwater calanoid copepod species Boeckella hamata, B. propinqua, B. delicata and B. tanea are confined in the North Island of New Zealand to specific technostratigraphic terranes when natural waters only are examined, and as such each species can be considered to have a native range. The recently colonised calanoid copepod species Boeckella minuta (6 locations), Skistodiaptomus pallidus (3 locations) and Sinodiaptomus valkanovi (2 locations) are to date confined to constructed water bodies. Boeckella symmetrica (2 locations) may be confined to constructed water bodies, but the status of one location is unclear. Boeckella triarticulata, a species common in the South Island, is known only from a single farm dam in the North Island. The native species Boeckella hamata, B. propinqua and B. delicata were found to occur in constructed waters, but only B. propinqua was found in constructed water bodies outside their natural ranges (9 locations). Calamoecia lucasi is found in lakes throughout most of the North Island, and is not confined to any one terrane. My results indicate that constructed water bodies are more easily invaded by non-indigenous species than natural water bodies, represents a potential pathway for future invaders to establish, and provides locations for species to spread. In order to determine whether recently established freshwater calanoid copepod species have the potential to spread from their present habitats into other water bodies, the prosomal lengths of non-indigenous calanoid copepod species were measured and compared with those for native species. The results suggest that dietary overlap should prevent the non-indigenous species present to date from spreading into any water bodies with established Boeckella populations, although Sinodiaptomus valkanovi and Boeckella triarticulata could potentially spread to lakes containing only Calamoecia lucasi. Data on the co-occurrences of native freshwater calanoid copepod species support the theory of dietary exclusion, as Boeckella species have not been found to coexist. In order to test whether New Zealand marine environments have been invaded by non-indigenous calanoid copepods, and whether ports have been more regularly invaded than non-port areas, calanoid copepods were sampled from various coastal locations around the North Island. With the possible exception of Sulcanus conflictus, no non-indigenous species were found, indicating that non-indigenous marine calanoid copepod species are not establishing in New Zealand despite a history of invasion elsewhere.

Zooplankton growth and trophic linkages : Implications for fish feeding conditions in the Baltic Sea

The aim of this Thesis was to improve our understanding and assessment of feeding conditions for zooplanktivorous fish in the Baltic Sea. We investigated (papers I, II) the usefulness of biochemical proxies for assessments of growth and metabolic rates in the dominant Baltic copepod Acartia bifilosa. A predictive model (paper I) for egg production rate (EPR), based on body size, RNA content, and water temperature, was established using females of different geographical origin. This model demonstrates the usefulness of RNA content as a proxy for growth in zooplankton and, together with abundance data, it could be used to evaluate fish feeding conditions. Further (paper II), using A. bifilosa exposed to a food gradient, we evaluated responses of physiological rates and other biochemical proxies for growth and established correlations between physiological and biochemical variables. EPR and ingestion rate were most significantly correlated with RNA content. As assayed variables saturated at different food concentrations, food availability may affect assessments of physiological rates using proxies. In paper III, we explored the effect of high EPR and ingestion rate on astaxanthin content in A. bifilosa. We found that the astaxanthin content decreased at high feeding rates, most likely due to decreased assimilation efficiency. This may impact the quality of zooplankton as prey. The invasion of Cercopagis pengoi, a zooplanktivorous cladoceran, has altered the trophic linkages in the Baltic Sea food web. In paper IV, we evaluated the feeding of zooplanktivorous fish on C. pengoi and found that irrespective of size both herring and sprat feed on it, with large herring being more selective. In turn, C. pengoi feeds mainly on older copepods (paper V), which are acknowledged important in fish nutrition. Χωροχρονική κατανομή του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού και του ιχθυοπλαγκτού στο Β.Α. Αιγαίο σε σχέση με αβιοτικές και βιοτικές παραμέτρους / Mesozooplankton and ichthyoplankton spatiotemporal distribution patterns in the N.E. Aegean Sea in relation to abiotic and biotic variables

Στόχο της παρούσας διατριβής αποτέλεσε η διερεύνηση των αβιοτικών και βιοτικών παραγόντων που ελέγχουν τη χωροχρονική κατανομή δύο βασικών συστατικών του πλαγκτικού συστήματος στο βορειοανατολικό Αιγαίο, του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού και των ιχθυονυμφών. Η περιοχή μελέτης παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον καθώς χαρακτηρίζεται από αυξημένα επίπεδα παραγωγικότητας, συγκριτικά με τον ολιγότροφο χαρακτήρα της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, και ως εκ τούτου υψηλή συγκέντρωση ιχθυοαποθεμάτων (κυρίως μικρών πελαγικών ψαριών). Τα χαρακτηριστικά αυτά θεωρείται ότι σχετίζονται με την τοπογραφία της περιοχής (εκτεταμένη υφαλοκρηπίδα), την εισροή ποταμών αλλά κυρίως με την έντονη μέσης κλίμακας υδρολογική πολυπλοκότητα (μέτωπο Λήμνου, αντικυκλώνας Σαμοθράκης), που επάγει η εισροή και κυκλοφορία του χαμηλής αλατότητας νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας (<30 psu), στα 20-30 επιφανειακά μέτρα της υδάτινης στήλης. Η μελέτη της κατανομής και σύνθεσης του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού (σε κατακόρυφη και οριζόντια διάσταση) πραγματοποιήθηκε σε ένα εκτεταμένο δίκτυο σταθμών κατά τη διάρκεια τριών περιόδων θερμοστρωμάτωσης (Ιούλιος 2003– Σεπτέμβριος 2003 – Ιούλιος 2004), ενώ των ιχθυονυμφών κατά το μήνα Ιούνιο των ετών 2003 έως 2006. Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα της έρευνας, το απόθεμα του μεσοζωπλαγκτού στο Β.Α. Αιγαίο βρέθηκε μεγαλύτερο σε σχέση με εκείνο που αναφέρεται για άλλα ελληνικά πελαγικά νερά (Ιόνιο, νότιο Αιγαίο), κλειστούς και ημίκλειστους κόλπους καθώς και για ορισμένες παράκτιες και πελαγικές περιοχές της Δυτικής Μεσογείου. Σημαντικό κομμάτι της βιοκοινότητας, ειδικά στο επιφανειακό στρώμα επίδρασης του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας, αποτέλεσαν ηθμοφάγες ομάδες όπως τα κλαδοκεραιωτά, οι κωπηλάτες και τα βυτιοειδή. Το Σεπτέμβριο 2003 η αλατότητα στην περιοχή βρέθηκε υψηλότερη κατά δύο μονάδες σε σχέση με τον Ιούλιο του ίδιου έτους, αντανακλώντας ενδεχομένως τη μικρότερη εισροή του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας (πλούσιο σε διαλυτό οργανικό άνθρακα), και η αφθονία των ηθμοφάγων ομάδων ήταν σημαντικά μειωμένη την περίοδο αυτή σε σχέση με τον Ιούλιο 2003. Η χρονική αυτή διακύμανση στο απόθεμα του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού φάνηκε να σχετίζεται τόσο με τη διαφοροποίηση της επίδρασης του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας στην περιοχή, όσο και με τα χαρακτηριστικά της βιολογίας των οργανισμών (π.χ. εποχικός κύκλος). Τον Ιούλιο 2004 το νερό της Μαύρης Θάλασσας περιορίστηκε κυρίως στο ανατολικό τμήμα της θρακικής υφαλοκρηπίδας, εγκλωβιζόμενο σε μια αντικυκλωνική δομή γύρω από τη Σαμοθράκη περίπου 50 km διαμέτρου, και οι τιμές αφθονίας και βιομάζας βρέθηκαν ιδιαίτερα αυξημένες (διπλάσιες έως και τριπλάσιες) συγκριτικά με το 2003. Σημαντικό παράγοντα διαφοροποίησης των ποσοτικών χαρακτηριστικών του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού (αφθονία & βιομάζα) αλλά και διαμόρφωσης διακριτών συναθροίσεων ειδών κωπηπόδων και κλαδοκεραιωτών αποτέλεσε το βάθος. Τα επιφανειακά νερά, που δέχονταν την άμεση επιρροή του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας, εμφανίστηκαν περισσότερο παραγωγικά με ιδιαίτερη σύνθεση ειδών, των οποίων οι συναθροίσεις αποτέλεσαν ευαίσθητους δείκτες της οριζόντιας ωκεανογραφικής ετερογένειας. Αλλαγές στην παροχή και κυκλοφορία του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας φάνηκε να προκαλούν μέσης κλίμακας υδρολογική (μέτωπα, στρόβιλοι) και βιολογική πολυπλοκότητα στην περιοχή, η οποία βρέθηκε να αντανακλάται περαιτέρω στη δομή και κατανομή των ζωοπλαγκτικών συναθροίσεων τόσο στο οριζόντιο επίπεδο όσο και στο κατακόρυφο. Συγκεκριμένα, τα υδρολογικά μέτωπα αποτέλεσαν περιοχές αυξημένων τιμών φθορισμού και μεσοζωοπλαγκτικής βιομάζας και ο αντικυκλώνας της Σαμοθράκης αποτέλεσε ιδιαίτερο βιογεωχημικό ενδιαίτημα, χαρακτηριζόμενο από αυξημένες τιμές συνολικής αφθονίας και ιδιαίτερη σύνθεση βιοκοινότητας μεσοζωοπλαγκτού. Εκτός από τη σημασία των φυσικών παραγόντων στην κατανομή του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού, βιολογικές αλληλεπιδράσεις, όπως ο ανταγωνισμός και η θήρευση φάνηκε επίσης να παίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση των παρατηρούμενων προτύπων κατανομής. Η χωρική ετερογένεια στην κατανομή των πληθυσμών του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού φάνηκε να αντικατοπτρίζει τη σημασία των οικοφυσιολογικών χαρακτηριστικών των ειδών και του εύρους μεγέθους των τροφικών σωματιδίων. Σε αντίθεση με το μεσοζωοπλαγκτόν, η μέση αφθονία του συνόλου των ιχθυονυμφών καθώς και των μεμονωμένων ταξινομικών κατηγοριών τους στην περιοχή του Β.Α. Αιγαίου κατά την διάρκεια της τετραετούς έρευνας (2003-2006), δεν παρουσίασε σημαντική χρονική διαφοροποίηση. Οι ιχθυονύμφες των επιπελαγικών ειδών αποτέλεσαν το σημαντικότερο συστατικό της βιοκοινότητας, με κυρίαρχο είδος το Engraulis encrasicolus (γαύρος), είδος του οποίου η κορύφωση ωοτοκίας συμπίπτει χρονικά με την περίοδο δειγματοληψίας. Η οριζόντια κατανομή των ιχθυονυμφών στην περιοχή ήταν ετερογενής και φάνηκε να ελέγχεται από τη συνεργιστική δράση παραμέτρων που επιδρούν στο απόθεμα των γεννητόρων καθώς και φυσικών και βιολογικών διαδικασιών που επιδρούν στη πλαγκτική φάση των απογόνων τους. Ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση των παρατηρούμενων ιχθυονυμφικών προτύπων κατανομής βρέθηκε να παίζουν εξελικτικές προσαρμογές των ειδών σε μεγάλη κλίμακα χρόνου, όπως είναι η στρατηγική αναπαραγωγής και το περιβάλλον διαβίωσης. Ως εκ τούτου, το βάθος αλλά και ενδείξεις των τροφικών συνθηκών στην κολώνα του νερού (π.χ. συγκέντρωση ζωοπλαγκτού, φθορισμός) εξήγησαν σε σημαντικό βαθμό τη χωρική διαφοροποίηση της σύνθεσης της βιοκοινότητας των ιχθυονυμφών. Η κυκλοφορία επίσης του νερού της Μαύρης Θάλασσας φάνηκε σε πολλές περιπτώσεις να επηρεάζει σημαντικά τη διαμόρφωση της οριζόντιας κατανομής τους, είτε συμβάλλοντας στην κατακράτηση τους κοντά στα πεδία ωοτοκίας, ή, προκαλώντας τη διασπορά τους μακριά από αυτά. Η αντανάκλαση της οριζόντιας ωκεανογραφικής ετερογένειας στις συναθροίσεις των συγκεκριμένων μεροπλαγκτικών οργανισμών, παρότι λιγότερο έντονη σε σχέση με τις ολοπλαγκτικές ομάδες του μεσοζωοπλαγκτού, ήταν επίσης εμφανής. Η υψηλή συμμετοχή στη βιοκοινότητα των ιχθυονυμφών, πελαγικών ειδών, που κατά την ενήλικη φάση είναι άμεσα επηρεαζόμενα από μεταβολές που πραγματοποιούνται στο ανώτερο στρώμα της υδάτινης στήλης (όπου επιδρά το νερό της Μαύρης Θάλασσας), φαίνεται να είχε σημαντική συμβολή σε αυτό. / The main aim of the present study was directed towards an understanding of the agents (abiotic and biotic) that shape the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of two fundamental components of the northeastern Aegean Sea (NEA) planktonic food web, namely mesozooplankton and fish larvae. The study area is of great scientific interest due to its relatively increased local productivity levels, comparatively to the highly oligotrophic eastern Mediterranean, hence its importance as a fishing ground, especially for fisheries targeting small pelagic fish. These characteristics are considered to be associated with local topographic features (extended continental shelf), riverine inflow, but mainly the high hydrological complexity (development of fronts and eddies) which is induced by the inflow and advection of low salinity Black Sea waters (BSW) at the upper part of the water column (surface 20-30 m). Mesozooplankton group composition and distribution patterns were examined both in horizontal and vertical plane in an extended sampling grid, during three stratification periods (July 2003 – September 2003 – July 2004). Four broad scale ichthyoplankton surveys were carried out (June 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006) over a station grid similar to that of mesozooplankton sampling, in order to investigate the major distribution and abundance patterns of fish larvae in the area. According to this study, the overall mesozooplankton standing stock in the NEA was found higher than those typically reported for other Mediterranean ecosystems, including hellenic pelagic waters and various closed or semi-closed gulfs as wells as some western Mediterranean pelagic and coastal regions. During all sampling periods, filter feeding taxa i.e. cladocerans, doliolids, appendicularians consisted an important element of mesozooplankton group composition particularly at the upper water column (directly influenced by the BSW). In September 2003, when surface salinity was 2 psu higher than July 2003 (probably reflecting lower BSW inflow in the area), the abundance values of these zooplankters decreased considerably. This temporal variation seemed to be related not only to differentiation in BSW (rich in dissolved organic carbon) influence, but also to species specific biological characteristics (e.g. seasonal cycle). In July 2004, BSW circulation was mainly restricted in the eastern part of the Thracian shelf and the abundance and biomass values in the area were significantly increased (2-fold up to 3-fold increase) compared to the previous surveys. Sampling depth played an important role in the differentiation of quantitive mesozooplankton characteristics (in terms of abundance and biomass values) but also in the formation of different copepod and cladoceran species assemblages. Surface waters, under the direct influence of BSW, were more productive and their species assemblages were sensitive tracers of horizontal oceanographic variability. Changes in the supply and flow of BSW into the NEA induced mesoscale hydrographic (fronts, eddies) and biological variability which was reflected on the structure and distribution of mesozooplankton assemblages in the horizontal and vertical plane. Frontal zones (e.g. southeastern of Lemnos) were characterized by increased fluorescence values and mesozooplankton biomass. The anticyclonic eddy over the Thracian shelf, where BSW is entrapped (Samothraki gyre), seemed to serve as a distinguished biochemical habitat with increased mesozooplankton abundance values and distinctive group composition. Besides the importance of physical parameters for zooplankton distribution in the NEA, biological interactions (e.g. competition, predation) may have played a significant role in shaping the observed distribution patterns. The hydrological heterogeneity induced by the advection of the BSW seemed to influence the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the lower trophic levels. In turn, mesozooplankton populations presented spatial heterogeneity that reflected the importance of food size spectra and species-specific ecophysiological characteristics. Contrary to mesozooplankton community, mean abundance values of fish larvae (either as a total or for each separate taxonomic category) did not show any significant interannual difference during the four year study in the area of NEA (2003-2006). Fish larvae of epipelagic species consisted the major component of community, while a dominance of anchovy larvae was also observed due to the coincidence of the sampling period with the intensive spawning of this species. Fish larvae horizontal distribution was heterogenous and seemed to be controlled by the coupling between agents acting on the spawning stock and physical and biological processes influencing the planktonic phase of their offsprings. Fish larvae distributional patterns seemed to highly depend on species specific evolutionary adaptations, like reproduction strategy and the living habitat of the adults. Sampling depth as well as indications of water column trophic conditions (e.g. zooplankton concentration, fluorescence), explained significantly the spatial differentiation of fish larvae assemblages during all sampling periods. The circulation pattern of BSW seemed to be an important determinant of the taxonomic composition and abundance of larval fish assemblages, contributing either on larval retention near the spawning grounds, or inducing their dispersion. The assemblages of these meroplanktonic early-life stages also reflected the horizontal oceanographic heterogeneity in NEA, though less intensively comparing to other holoplanktonic zooplankters. The domination of local larval fish community by larvae of pelagic fish, that in the adult phase are directly influenced by changes taking place in the upper part of the water column (influenced by the BSW), may have contributed to this reflection.

The effects of sympatric and allopatric hab species on calanoid copepod swimming behavior

Harmful algal blooms, commonly referred to as red tides, occur yearly with dramatic impacts on marine ecology, coastal economies, and human health. As a consequence, research into the zooplankton grazers that consume HABs is highly important. However, changes in ocean temperature may increase the range of many HABs, exposing historically naive copepods to new species and their associated chemicals. Little research into the impact of allopatric verses sympatric species, particularly on the immediate behavioral impact, has been performed, leaving the indirect fitness effects of HAB exposure and consumption relatively unknown. We measured alterations in the swimming behavior of the calanoid copepod Temora longicornis following exposure to sympatric Alexandrium fundyense and allopatric Karenia brevis treatments. After a 15-16 hours depuration period postA. fundyense exposure, T. longicornis exhibited increased average swimming speed and an elevated net to gross displacement ratio (NGDR). During exposure toK. brevis, copepods exhibited an immediate decrease in swimming speed and NGDR, as well as an increased frequency of jump behavior. However, these effects faded after an one-hour depuration period, and disappeared after a 15-16 hour depuration period. The alterations in swimming behavior demonstrated by the copepods treated A. fundyense may increase encounter rate with predators, while copepods treated with K. brevis remain in bloom conditions for longer periods of time, negatively affecting survivorship. Temora longicornis individuals also may be made more visible to predators due to the increase in jumps seen during treatment with K. brevis. These behavioral changes suggest how HABs escape from zooplankton grazer control by altering copepod swimming behavior, and the pattern of predator-prey evolution that occurs over time.
