Examining cognitive processes of unstructured decision making

Shanteau / Unstructured decision making is a dynamic process where an individual must create an alternative because one is not available or provided. In this type of a decision, an individual may not have formed preferences or may not know the path to arrive at a solution. As opposed to selecting from existing alternatives, little research examines when decision makers create an alternative. Electronic commerce websites allow individuals to create a product by customizing it. A web-based simulation called Interactive Choice was developed for the investigation. It is an interactive naturalistic decision space permitting experimental controls such as random placement of participants into conditions and random display of stimuli. Participants customized three products (pizza, cell phones, shoes). Building on theoretical foundations of unfolding model and Image Theory, a model asserts the presentation of the information and preparation of the decision maker influences a decision maker. A phased examination explores decision makers’ cognitive processes by measuring participants’ evaluations of the product created and the process to create it. In the first phase, three experiments find, contrary to previous independent investigations, participants rarely retain a pre-selected default value. Logistic regression reveals that the odds ratio of predicting default retention is dependent on product type. In the second phase, results identify that problem solving instructions influence decision making. Analyses of multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis reveal patterns for default retention and problem solving instructions that define an electronic decision aid called Choice Builder. The dissertation suggests that when an individual creates a product, he or she has more control over the process that subsequently reduces the influence of the default. A new theoretical foundation is proposed identifying that for unstructured decisions individuals construct both decision strategies and preferences while creating an alternative. With an active process of acquiring and evaluating information, an individual forms a decision strategy and updates preferences to achieve an ideal outcome. This dissertation makes four contributions that include 1) a research tool, Interactive Choice, for exploration, 2) the identification of cognitive processes involved, 3) a proposal of a new theoretical approach, and 4) an electronic decision aid, Choice Builder.

Validating the User-Centered Hybrid Assessment Tool (User-CHAT): a comparative usability evaluation

Uhlarik / Usability practitioners need effective usability assessment techniques in order to facilitate development of usable consumer products. Many usability evaluation methods have been promoted as the ideal. Few, however, fulfill expectations concerning effectiveness. Additionally, lack of empirical data forces usability practitioners to rely on personal judgments and/or anecdotal statements when deciding upon which usability method best suits their needs. Therefore the present study had two principal objectives: (1) to validate a hybrid usability technique that identifies important and ignores inconsequential usability problems, and (2) to provide empirical performance data for several usability protocols on a variety of contemporary comparative metrics. The User-Centered Hybrid Assessment Tool (User-CHAT) was developed to maximize efficient diagnosis of usability issues from a behaviorally-based perspective while minimizing time and resource limitations typically associated with usability assessment environments. Several characteristics of user-testing, the heuristic evaluation, and the cognitive walkthrough were combined to create the User-CHAT. Prior research has demonstrated that the User-CHAT supports an evaluation within 3-4 hrs, can be used by individuals with limited human factors / usability background, and requires little training to be used competently, even for complex systems. A state-of-the-art suite of avionics displays and a series of benchmark tasks provided the context where the User-CHAT’s performance was measured relative to its parent usability methods. Two techniques generated comparison lists of usability problems – user-testing data and various inclusion criteria for usability problems identified by the User-CHAT, heuristic evaluation, and cognitive walkthrough. Overall the results demonstrated that the User-CHAT attained higher effectiveness scores than the heuristic evaluation and cognitive walkthrough, suggesting that it helped evaluators identify many usability problems that actually impact users, i.e., higher thoroughness, while attenuating time and effort on issues that were not important, i.e., higher validity. Furthermore, the User-CHAT had the greatest proportion of usability problems that were rated as serious, i.e., usability issues that hinder performance and compromise safety. The User-CHAT’s performance suggests that it is an appropriate usability technique to implement into the product development lifecycle. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.

Training an implicit reasoning strategy: engaging specific reasoning processes to enhance knowledge acquisition

Shanteau / A training protocol was developed to teach an implicit reasoning strategy to encourage the consideration of alternatives, specifically in behavioral trap decision environments. Engaging the strategy would thereby decrease the effect of focusing on traps, resulting in more rational behavior. In two studies, training was delivered in an instructor-less environment using paper-pencil and multimedia examples. The main training components consisted of analogical problem solving and counterfactual thinking. The potential moderators between training and performance outcomes consisted of an information processing disposition Need for Cognitive Closure, an individualized approach to decisions, Decision-Making Style, and a capacity to process information Working Memory Capacity. Arousal and mood were also measured before, during, and after the training as both have been linked with learning. In Study 1, participants engaged in analogical problem solving, additive counterfactual thinking, subtractive counterfactual thinking, or none of these (i.e., control group). Results revealed that the training was minimally effective, although some comparisons revealed a large shift from pre- to post-training in commitment score away from trap options. Likewise, the Need for Cognitive Closure was the best predictor of decision behavior revealing that a predisposition for amount of information processed during decision making is indicative of behavioral outcomes in this decision environment. Based on results from Study 1, the training was reformatted in Study 2 to obtain the maximum potential benefit. Analogical problem solving was coupled with each form of counterfactual thinking so participants engaged in both critical thinking processes. When training was effective, the two forms were differentially effective as related to behavioral trap problem type. Forward-looking training assisted problem types that force explicit cost recognition and immediate decision outcomes. Past-looking training assisted problem types that force little cost recognition and delayed decision outcomes. Results of this project could be used to enhance the acquisition of critical thinking as well as improve educational practices. Both information processing disposition and decision approach style predicted learning whereas capacity to process information and training manipulations did not. Future projects will examine how long the training effects last and if critical thinking training can be successfully applied to other decision environments.

Examining strategies for reducing cell phone use while driving: investigating the potential of targeting non-driving participants of cell phone conversations and testing the utility of techniques for reducing habitual responses to cell phones

Anti-distracted driving campaigns, which typically communicate risk information and target driver behavior, may produce limited effects because people tend to underestimate their risk from this behavior (e.g., Schlehofer et al., 2010). Study 1 compared the effects of messages targeting drivers to messages targeting non-drivers in order to examine the potential of discouraging people from having cell phone communication with others who are driving. Some anti-distracted driving campaigns have emphasized the potential harm to both the driver and others, but whether one approach (self-oriented or other-oriented messaging) is more persuasive than the other has not been examined empirically. Study 1 compared messages that were self-oriented, other-oriented, or neutral in terms of who could be affected by cell phone use while driving. Although cell phone use while driving generally is perceived as dangerous, people may make justifications for engaging in the behavior on at least some occasions, and these justifications may override the influence of risk knowledge on behavior. Consistent with inoculation theory (McGuire, 1961), if given the opportunity to practice refuting these justifications in a controlled setting, people will be more likely to defend themselves against justifications to engage in cell phone use while driving. Thus, Study 1 tested the prediction that participation in an inoculation task would reduce the likelihood of cell phone use while driving. Results from Study 1 suggested an advantage of targeting non-driving participants of cell phone conversations to enhance efforts for reducing on-the-road cell phone use. Study 1 also demonstrated a positive effect of inoculation, but primarily for behavior of non-driving participants of cell phone conversations. In addition to overconfidence in ability to avoid risk, habitual tendencies also may impede the influence of risk communication campaigns (Bayer & Campbell, 2012). Study 2 investigated the potential of mindfulness-based and implementation intentions techniques for helping people overcome habitual responses to their cell phone when doing so is inappropriate or inconvenient. Results indicated that pairing mindfulness-based training with risk information may be significantly more effective than risk information alone at inhibiting inappropriate cell phone use.

Investigation par les potentiels évoqués des effets de multiples commotions cérébrales chez les athlètes

Les commotions cérébrales subies en contexte sportif constituent un sujet préoccupant. Il est estimé qu’aux États-Unis, environ cinq pourcent de l’ensemble des athlètes subiront une commotion cérébrale. Celle-ci est considérée comme une blessure transitoire dans la majorité des cas. Dans le domaine de la commotion cérébrale sportive, le phénomène de risque accru chez des athlètes ayant subi préalablement des commotions cérébrales est bien documenté. Cet aspect remet en question l’aspect transitoire de la blessure. Les techniques d’imagerie fonctionnelle offrent un grand potentiel dans la compréhension de cette pathologie en montrant notamment les différences fonctionnelles chez des participants ayant subi un traumatisme crânio-cérébral léger en l’absence de résultats comportementaux. Il est probable que des altérations fonctionnelles persistent au-delà de la phase de récupération postsymptômes. L’électrophysiologie, en particulier les potentiels évoqués cognitifs sont un outil de choix pour étudier la question en raison de leur sensibilité et de la mesure fonctionnelle qu’ils permettent d’obtenir. Les potentiels évoqués cognitifs consistent en une réponse électrique cérébrale moyenne générée lors de l’accomplissement d’une tâche. Il est possible d’identifier différentes composantes dans le tracé d’un potentiel évoqué; ces composantes sont associées à différents aspects de l’activité électrique cérébrale durant le traitement perceptuel et cognitif.Les articles scientifiques inclus dans cette thèse se penchent sur les effets de commotions cérébrales multiples chez des athlètes plusieurs mois après la dernière commotion. Dans un premier temps, l’aspect temporel est évalué par le biais de la mesure de la P3a et la P3b dans différents groupes d’athlètes. Ces composantes sont liées aux processus de mémoire et d’attention. Les résultats suggèrent que, malgré un fonctionnement normal, les athlètes ayant subi des commotions cérébrales éprouveraient de probables changements cognitifs sous-cliniques persistants se traduisant par une atténuation des P3a et P3b. Des altérations seraient aussi présentes quelques années après la dernière commotion, mais de façon plus subtile. La deuxième étude soumise s’intéresse aux processus électrophysiologiques liés au maintien de l’information en mémoire de travail visuel chez des athlètes ayant subi plusieurs commotions cérébrales. La mesure utilisée est la SPCN (sustained posterior controlateral negativity), une composante ERP spécifique au processus cognitif étudié. Les résultats montrent non seulement une composante atténuée chez les athlètes ayant subi trois commotions cérébrales ou plus, mais aussi une modulation de la composante en fonction du nombre de commotions cérébrales subies. Ces résultats pourraient contribuer à expliquer le risque accru de subir des commotions cérébrales subséquentes observées chez ces athlètes. En lien avec la littérature, ces données pourraient s’expliquer par la présence de déficits cognitifs sous-cliniques ou encore par la mise en place de mécanismes compensatoires. Enfin, ces résultats invitent à une grande prudence dans la gestion des cas de commotions cérébrales ainsi qu’à un effort d’éducation plus poussé chez les jeunes athlètes afin qu’ils puissent prendre les meilleures décisions concernant leur avenir. / Concussions sustained in sporting contexts are a major concern. In United States only, it has been estimated that among all athletes in college teams, 5% will be concussed. According to an agreement following an international symposium on concussion in sport, in most cases, this is a transient injury. Within the field, it is known that the likelihood of sustaining a concussion increased as a function of the number of past concussions. This aspect challenges the transient conception of the injury. Functional imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or eventrelated potentials (ERP) showed functional alterations in absence of any behavioral changes within concussed athlete groups. ERP consist in the averaged cerebral electrical signal recorded on the scalp during a given stimulation or task. Many components may be identified within the signal, each associated to specific perceptual and cognitive functioning. In concussed athletes, it is possible that functional alterations persist well beyond the acute period. ERP have been chosen to study this topic because of their sensitivity. Scientific papers included in this thesis discuss the effects of multiple concussions among young adult athletes months after the last concussion. The first study investigates two groups of athletes with multiple concussions at different time points. P3a and P3b were used as electrophysiological markers. These components are known to be related to attention and memory functions. Results demonstrate that, despite normal neuropsychological evaluation, attenuation is present on both P3. Those changes were still present years after, but in a more subtle manner. The second study describes the effect of multiple concussions on sustained posterior contralateral negativity (SPCN), an ERP component specifically related to information maintenance in visual working memory. Results showed that athletes who sustained three concussions or more display an attenuated SPCN. Also, a modulation of the SPCN as a function of the number of concussions was point out. Overall, these results might help to explain the increased risk of further concussions among concussed athletes. It is possible that results are explained by subclinical cognitive deficits and/or compensatory mechanisms. Finally, such data invites extra precaution in the management of concussions. Also, it seems important to give young athletes plenty of information to allow them to make more enlightened decisions about their future.

Les habiletés spatio-cognitives des aveugles de naissance : résolution de labyrinthes tactiles

La navigation repose en majeure partie sur la vision puisque ce sens nous permet de rassembler des informations spatiales de façon simultanée et de mettre à jour notre position par rapport à notre environnement. Pour plusieurs aveugles qui se fient à l’audition, le toucher, la proprioception, l’odorat et l’écholocation pour naviguer, sortir à l’extérieur de chez soi peut représenter un défi considérable. Les recherches sur le circuit neuronal de la navigation chez cette population en particulier s’avèrent donc primordiales pour mieux adapter les ressources aux handicapés visuels et réussir à les sortir de leur isolement. Les aveugles de naissance constituent aussi une population d’intérêt pour l’étude de la neuroplasticité. Comme leur cerveau s’est construit en absence d’intrant visuel, la plupart des structures reliées au sens de la vue sont réduites en volume par rapport à ceux de sujets voyants. De plus, leur cortex occipital, une région normalement dédiée à la vision, possède une activité supramétabolique au repos, ce qui peut représenter un territoire vierge pouvant être recruté par les autres modalités pour exécuter diverses tâches sensorielles. Plusieurs chercheurs ont déjà démontré l’implication de cette région dans des tâches sensorielles comme la discrimination tactile et la localisation auditive. D’autres changements plastiques de nature intramodale ont aussi été observés dans le circuit neuronal de la navigation chez ces aveugles. Par exemple, la partie postérieure de l’hippocampe, impliquée dans l’utilisation de cartes mentales, est réduite en volume alors que la section antérieure est élargie chez ces sujets. Bien que ces changements plastiques anatomiques aient bel et bien été observés chez les aveugles de naissance, il reste toutefois à les relier avec leur aspect fonctionnel. Le but de la présente étude était d’investiguer les corrélats neuronaux de la navigation chez l’aveugle de naissance tout en les reliant avec leurs habiletés spatio-cognitives. La première étude comportementale a permis d’identifier chez les aveugles congénitaux une difficulté d’apprentissage de routes tactiles construites dans des labyrinthes de petite échelle. La seconde étude, employant la technique d’imagerie par résonance magnétique fonctionnelle, a relié ces faiblesses au recrutement de régions cérébrales impliquées dans le traitement d’une perspective égocentrique, comme le lobule pariétal supérieur droit. Alors que des sujets voyants aux yeux bandés excellaient dans la tâche des labyrinthes, ces derniers recrutaient des structures impliquées dans un traitement allocentrique, comme l’hippocampe et le parahippocampe. Par ailleurs, la deuxième étude a confirmé le recrutement du cortex occipital dans une tâche de navigation chez les aveugles seulement. Ceci confirme l’implication de la plasticité intermodale dans des tâches cognitives de plus haut niveau, comme la navigation. / Navigation is predominately based on vision as it gathers spatial information simultaneously and allows a continuous update of our position relative to space. For many blind people who rely mainly on auditive, haptic, proprioceptive, olfactive and echolocating cues to navigate, leaving outside their home can be a challenge. Research on the navigational neural network in this particular population is therefore crucial to better adapt resources for visually impaired people and free them from isolation. Congenitally blind subjects are also an interesting population for the study of neuroplasticity. As their brain was built without any visual input, most structures related to vision are reduced in volume compared to those of seeing subjects. Moreover, their occipital cortex, a region normally dedicated to vision, has a suprametabolic activity at rest, which could represent a virgin territory that can be recruited by other modalities to accomplish various sensory tasks. Recently some researchers have demonstrated the involvement of this region in sensory tasks such as tactile discrimination and auditive localisation. Other intramodal plastic changes have also been observed in the blind’s navigational neural network. The posterior part of hippocampus, involved in cognitive mapping, is reduced in volume while the anterior section is enlarged in blind subjects. Although some anatomical plastic changes have been observed in congenitally blind’s brain navigational system, their functional aspect remains to be elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the neural correlates of navigation in congenital blindness and to link them with the blinds’ spatio-cognitive skills. The first behavioral study identified route learning difficulties in congenitally blind participants when they were ask to navigate inside small-scaled tactile mazes. Using functional magnetic resonance imagery in the second study, these problems were associated with the recruitment of brain regions involved in an egocentric perspective processing, such as right superior parietal lobule. While blindfolded seeing subjects excelled in the maze task, they recruited structures involved in allocentric processing, such as hippocampus and parahippocampus. Moreover, the second study confirmed the recruitment of occipital cortex in a navigation task for blind subjects only. This strengthens the involvement of crossmodal plasticity in higher level cognitive tasks, such as navigation.

Les effets d’une commotion cérébrale d’origine sportive sur le fonctionnement cognitif de l’enfant évalués à l’aide de potentiels évoqués cognitifs et de tests neuropsychologiques

Les commotions cérébrales d’origine sportive sont fréquentes chez les athlètes professionnels et semblent l’être tout autant chez les jeunes sportifs. Chez l’adulte, les symptômes se résorbent dans la majorité des cas assez rapidement (7-10 jours), mais la récupération peut s’avérer différente chez les jeunes. Plusieurs études utilisant les potentiels évoqués cognitifs ont découvert des anomalies cérébrales en l’absence de symptômes cliniques observables chez l'adulte. Toutefois, peu de données scientifiques sont disponibles sur les répercussions d’un tel impact sur le cerveau en développement. Le but de l’étude était de déterminer s’il existe une relation entre l’âge de survenue au moment de la commotion et la gravité des déficits. Cette étude transversale a évalué le fonctionnement cognitif de sportifs par des tests neuropsychologiques ainsi que les mécanismes neuronaux de l’orientation de l’attention (P3a) et de mise à jour de l’information en mémoire de travail (P3b) à l’aide de potentiels évoqués cognitifs. Les athlètes étaient répartis selon trois groupes d’âge [9-12 ans (n=32); 13-16 ans (n=34); adultes (n=30)], la moitié ayant subi une commotion dans la dernière année. Les comparaisons entre les groupes ont été effectuées par une série d’ANOVAs. Comparativement au groupe contrôle, les adolescents commotionnés présentaient des déficits de mémoire de travail. Les athlètes commotionnés démontraient une réduction de l’amplitude de la P3b comparativement aux non-commotionnés. Les résultats illustrent la présence de déficits neurophysiologiques persistants et ce, au moins six mois suivant l’impact. Les enfants semblent aussi sensibles que les adultes aux effets délétères d’une commotion cérébrale et les conséquences s’avèrent plus sévères chez l’adolescent. / Sport-related concussions are common injuries among professional athletes as well in adolescents and children participating in organized sports. Although the majority of concussions resolve rapidly in adults (7-10 days), recovery could be different in younger athletes. Several studies using event-related potentials show that adult athletes have cerebral anomalies in the absence of clinical symptoms. However, the consequences of a sport-related concussion on the developing brain are less known. The purpose of this study was to determine whether age differences exist with respect to cognitive functioning following a sport-related concussion. This cross-sectionnal study assessed cognitive functioning using standardized neuropsychological tests as well the neuronal mechanisms associated with the re-orienting attention (P3a) and with the update of information in working memory (P3b), using event-related potentials. Athletes were divided into three age groups [9-12 yrs (n=32); 13-16 yrs (n=34); and adults (n=30)] half of whom suffered from a sport-related concussion. Group comparisons were investigated with a series of ANOVAs. Specifically, concussed adolescents showed persistent deficits in working memory compare with their non injured counterparts. Concussed athletes from all age groups had significantly lower amplitude for the P3b component of their ERPs compared to their non injured teammates. No age-related differences for ERP’s were found among the concussed groups. These data suggest persistent neurophysiological deficits that are present at least 6 months following a concussion. Children appear to be as sensitive as adults to the consequences of a concussion and adolescents seem experience the most severe outcomes.

Impact de l’âge sur les effets de la caféine sur la vigilance chez les sujets jeunes et d’âge moyen

La grande disponibilité et les propriétés psychostimulantes de la caféine en font l’un des psychostimulants les plus consommés mondialement. Sa capacité à augmenter la vigilance serait reliée à son action antagoniste des récepteurs adénosinergiques. Le vieillissement s'accompagne de changements dans les mécanismes de régulation de la vigilance, y compris le système adénosinergique, qui pourraient moduler les effets de la caféine. Alors que plusieurs études ont investigué les impacts de la caféine sur la vigilance chez une population jeune, peu ont identifié les effets chez une population plus âgée. Deux protocoles expérimentaux pouvant distinguer les effets différentiels de la caféine selon l’âge ont été élaborés. La première étude a évalué les effets de 200 mg de caféine sur la vigilance, comparée à un placebo, chez une population jeune et d’âge moyen lors d’une privation de sommeil de 25 heures. L’augmentation de la vigilance subjective et de la performance psychomotrice suite à l’administration de caféine est comparable dans les deux groupes d’âge. Or, des modifications de la puissance spectrale de certaines bandes de fréquences de l’EEG d’éveil suite à l’administration de la caféine sont spécifiques au groupe d’âge moyen. Une deuxième étude a évalué les effets de 200 mg de caféine sur la vigilance, comparée à un placebo, chez des sujets jeunes et d’âge moyen consommateurs légers de caféine. La caféine n’a pas augmenté la vigilance subjective des consommateurs légers. Par ailleurs, la caféine a augmenté la performance psychomotrice de façon similaire dans les deux groupes d’âge. De plus, on remarque que la caféine induit des modifications de la puissance spectrale sur certaines bandes de fréquences à l’EEG chez le groupe d’âge moyen uniquement. Ces travaux suggèrent tout d’abord que la caféine tend à augmenter la vigilance, peu importe le niveau basal d’alerte. De plus, malgré l’absence d’effet subjectif de la caféine sur la vigilance, les consommateurs légers de caféine montrent des effets sur les mesures objectives de la vigilance. Bien que la caféine augmente la vigilance chez les deux groupes d’âge, la spécificité de certaines modifications relevées à l’EEG suggère une augmentation de la sensibilité à la caféine selon l’âge. Il est possible qu’il existe des changements du système adénosinergique au cours du vieillissement qui sous-tendent les effets différentiels de la caféine au cours du vieillissement. / The availability and psychoactive properties of caffeine make it one of the most widely consumed behaviourally active substances in the world. The capacity of caffeine to increase vigilance relies on its antagonist action on adenosine receptors. Aging is associated with changes in the mechanisms regulating vigilance, possibly through changes in the adenosinergic system which could in turn affect eh influence of caffeine. While extensive research identified the impacts of caffeine on vigilance in young populations, few studies have investigated the effects in an older population. Two experimental protocols which can highlight the differential effects of caffeine according to age were elaborated. The first study estimated the effects of 200 mg of caffeine on vigilance, compared with a placebo, in young and middle-aged subjects during 25 hours of sleep deprivation. Caffeine increased subjective and psychomotor measures similarly in young and middle-aged subjects. However, modifications of the spectral power in some frequencies bands after caffeine ingestion were specific to the middle-aged group. The second study focused on the effects of 200 mg of caffeine on vigilance, compared with a placebo, in young and middle-aged light caffeine consumers. Caffeine did not increase subjective alertness in light consumers but enhanced psychomotor performance similarly in both age groups. Furthermore, caffeine affected waking EEG spectral power in specific frequencies bands in the middle-aged group only. In conclusion, these results suggest that caffeine enhance vigilance when basal level of alertness is either high or low. Furthermore, light consumers show effects of caffeine on subjective vigilance but not on objective measures. In spite of an increase of alertness in both age groups, some modifications found in the waking EEG of middle-aged subjects suggest a differential effect of caffeine depending on age. It is possible to hypothesize that changes in the adenosinergic system occur during aging and these changes could explain our results.

Une silhouette naturelle est-elle fréquemment classée dans plusieurs catégories de base?

Les silhouettes ambiguës, comme celle du lapin/canard (Jastrow, 1899), ont été étudiées selon plusieurs approches. Toutefois, les figures prises en exemples dans la large majorité des études sont généralement les mêmes. Cette redondance des images ambiguës utilisées pousse à croire qu'elles sont peut-être assez rares. Certaines observations anecdotiques suggèrent cependant qu’elles seraient au contraire relativement fréquentes. C'est ce que cherche à déterminer cette expérience. Nous avons utilisé des modèles tridimensionnels d'animaux projetés de façon aléatoire afin d'en extraire les silhouettes dont la complexité périmétrique a ensuite été modifiée par lissage. Treize sujets ont dû indiquer ce qu'ils percevaient dans l'image. Nous démontrons qu’une silhouette est classée en moyenne dans 1.9079 catégories de base. Nous avons également démontré qu’une diminution de la complexité périmétrique rend d’abord une silhouette plus ambiguë pour éventuellement atteindre un sommet (équivalent à environ six fois la complexité périmétrique d’un disque) à la suite duquel l’ambiguïté chute. / Ambiguous silhouettes such as the duck/rabbit (Jastrow, 1899) have been studied by several approaches. However, the figures taken as examples in the vast majority of studies are generally the same. This redundancy of the ambiguous images used in litterature implies they may be quite rare. On the other hand, anecdotal evidence suggests that they might be relatively frequent. This is what this experiment is trying to establish. We used three-dimensional models of animals from a random point of view to extract silhouettes whose perimetric complexity was subsequently modified by smoothing. Thirteen subjects were asked to indicate what they saw in the image. We show that silhouettes are classified on average with 1.9079 based categories. We also established that a decrease in the perimetric complexity initially makes a more ambiguous figure but that this effect eventually reaches a peak (at a perimetric complexity of approximately 6 times that of a disk) after which ambiguity drops.
