Palaiologou, Polytimi-Maria 10 May 2010 (has links)

Economy and authority : a study of the coinage of Hiberno-Scandinavian Dublin and Ireland

Woods, Andrew Richard January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between political authority and economic change in the tenth to twelfth centuries AD. This is often interpreted as a period of dramatic economic and political upheaval; enormous growth in commerce, the emergence of an urban network and increasingly centralised polities are all indicative of this process. Ireland has rarely been considered in discussion of this sort but analysis of Ireland’s political economy has much to contribute to the debate. This will be tackled through a consideration of the coinage struck in Ireland between c.995 and 1170 with focus upon the two themes of production and usage. In analysing this material the scale and scope of a monetary economy, the importance of commerce and the controlling aspects of royal authority will each be addressed. The approach deployed is also overtly comparative with material from other contemporary areas, particularly England and Norway, used to provide context. Ultimately, in seeking to analyse these questions within this comparative context, the issue of where economic agency behind changes in the European economy will be considered. Chapters 1 and 2 situate the research within the wider scholarly debate and precise historical context respectively. Chapters 3 to 6 are a consideration of the manner in which the Hiberno-Scandinavian coinage was produced and administered. This reassesses questions of the scale of production, administration and the role of royal authority in the production of the coinage based upon a comprehensive re-categorisation and re-dating of the material. Chapters 7 and 8 concern the use of coins in the urban environment of Dublin and across the entirety of Ireland, with coinage analysed within its archaeological contexts. Ultimately, this thesis suggests that monetary economy and levels of commerce were substantial, variable and yet relatively geographically constrained. When considered in relationship to contemporary political contexts, the importance of royal authority in directing the economy is determined to be minimal with agency behind economic change seen to rest with an urban, mercantile community.

Lee, Monica L. 11 1900 (has links)
The encounter between Spain and the New World --the Americas-- is one of the distinctive historical events of the 15th century. So it is surprising that there is very little reference to the Americas in the many plays remaining from the Spanish Golden Age theatre. This thesis studies six plays centering on the Arauco wars in Southern Chile and the figure of one of the first governors of that country, don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate to what extent the literary elaboration of the topic contributed to the vision of the New World held by the Spanish public. The dramatists that dealt with this theme did not have any direct contact with the Americas, therefore their representation of that world was based on oral accounts and literary sources available at the time. Among the latter are the letters of a conqueror, two chronicles, two epic poems and a panegiric text. The first part of this thesis consists of the textual analysis of this literary corpus. The main focus of the analysis is the influence of these sources on the dramas and how the characteristics of each genre contributed to their creation. The analysis of the dramatic works with Araucanian content (five plays and one auto sacramental) forms the second part of this thesis. The approach centers particularly on the representation of the Indian world as the "Other" opposed to the Spanish world. The analysis of these texts shows the subtle evolutionary process by which the treatment of the historical fact --Arauco and the Conquest-- in the theatre contributed to create the "idea" of America held at the time in Spain. Also, the re-elaboration of characters and motives indicates the emergence of native mythical figures which have become part of the historic and cultural patrimony of Chile today. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Christian divine, holy and saintly protection of African rulers in the Byzantine ‘Coptic’ iconographic tradition

Steyn, Raita 22 October 2014 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. (Greek) / This thesis deals with the Christian divine, holy and saintly protection of African rulers in the Afro-Byzantine ‘Coptic’ (mainly Nubian and Ethiopian) iconographic tradition. The term ‘icon’ is used in its Byzantine Orthodox meaning as “a theological art picture; a religious, sacred image”, according to the theological and artistic Byzantine prescriptions.1 The term is also applied to frescos, murals, mosaics, larger wooden panels, illustrations in manuscripts and scrolls and smaller items such as protective amulets and charms, depicting a Christian holy representation. The iconographic themes, representing authority and its preservation and protection will be discussed, analysed and examined, the two coefficients being authority and protection of royals and their deputies and officials (i.e. the ‘protected’) on the one hand, and on the other hand Christ, the Holy Virgin, angels, military and non-military saints, supernatural and holy beings (i.e. the ‘protectors’). Firstly, a historical overview of the Byzantine and Afro-Byzantine Orthodox society in terms of religious, social, cultural and political influences is presented and the importance of Orthodox iconography and hagiography and the transformation of local Afro-Byzantine themes are analysed. As such, once the conversion from paganism to Christianity took place in Africa, influences of the Byzantine iconography and hagiography were transformed and integrated with local African Orthodox themes. Byzantine ideology and political theory as well as their relevance for the Coptic-Egyptian, Nubian and Ethiopian context have been discussed, while the artistic and symbolic iconographic representations of the Byzantine (and Medieval Afro-Byzantine) periods...

When worlds collide : structure and fantastic in selected 12th- and 13th- century French narratives

Bolding, Sharon Lynn Dunkel 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines six texts o f the 12[sup th] and 13[sup th] centuries for the fantastic mode. It first refutes the critical assertion that the fantastic could not exist in medieval literature, but also establishes that most of the casually denominated "fantastic" is not. For the genuine fantastic, both in general and in its medieval appearances, questions of reality are at most peripheral. Rather the fantastic mode encodes itself in the narrative structure, creating ambiguity and openness. The structural approach frees the discussion o f the fantastic from theories predicated upon issues of thematics, reality-based analysis, and didactic categorizations o f supernatural objects. The first two chapters synthesize those elements from modern works of fantastic theory, (re)deflning the fantastic based upon a semiotic approach. The introduction concentrates on the need to reexamine the corpus of critical works addressing the fantastic. Chapter 1 summarizes the theoretical discussion in order to adjust the definition of "fantastic" as a critical term according to a more pre-Renaissance view of reality. Chapter 2 proposes the parallel worlds model as a structural model for the identification of the fantastic mode in texts where the supernatural is evident, with an emphasis on fantastic space as an intermediary locale between worlds. The last four chapters apply the parallel worlds model to a selected corpus of six narratives. While the structures of these texts vary in length, the fantastic is consistently manifested in a pattern that alternates between the real world, fantastic space and the otherworld. The open-ended structure of five narratives indicates that journeys to the otherworld are rarely accomplished with a high degree of completion, and therefore the narrative program remains incomplete. The conclusion is a defense of the fantastic within medieval French literature, concentrating on how the supernatural creates /otherness/, fantastic space and openness in the narrative program. The fantastic as a powerful but elusive force within Old French romance narratives often shifts to the merveilleioc in the end. The parallel worlds model, when used in conjunction with other theories for identifying the fantastic, is a structural method that emphasizes openness as a characteristic of the fantastic within medieval romance narratives. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

This thesis aims to analyze the performance of the Senate of Vila Rica' s Chamber from 1706 to 1808 in its different dimensions: politic, social and economic dimensions. The study is directed to the political and administrative government of the officials of Vila Rica' s city-council, trying to analyze the performance of this "local bureaucracy" in the changing character of temporal context mentioned. The long term perspective seeks to embrace a period, in which occurred an internal economic reorganization in Minas Gerais captaincy, while the mining acme began to recede to mercantile activities of subsistence directed to urban economy. In this period, thus, the mining activity was no longer the principal activity in Minas Gerais economy, in fact, mercantile as well as agricultural activities become its principal business. In this context, we are looking forward to establishing the existent relations between the Senate of Vila Rica' s Chamber, the Crown representatives in Minas Gerais government and Metropolitan authorities. On the one side, we try to establish the political space that this institution occupied inside the Captaincy in the relations maintained with military forces, the hearers, but also with some governors or General-Captains. On the other side, we try to portray the ways of communication and negotiation direct1y established between the chamberlain and the Metropolitan State representatives, who were in Lisbon city / Doutorado / Doutor em História

Carvalho, Ligia Cristina. January 2017 (has links)
The present research aims to investigate the discourses that resonate in the The Art of Courtly Love, evidencing, among other aspects, the discursive mechanisms that reinforce the relations of power that govern the medieval society. Written in the twelfth century by Andreas Capellanus, The Art of Courtly Love is an important source of study and reference for the new patterns of sensibility and representations instituted by the theme of courtly love. Composed by of three books, the work became the subject of study and controversy mainly due to the discrepancy between the first two books and the third. If in the first and second books one can see the praising of love called courteous and the exaltation of the feminine role in the process of ennoblement of the lover, in the third and last book the author assumes an opposite position, enumerating the hexes occasioned by this profane love, while vilifying women. In this thesis we‟ll try to show that this contrast is a result of the different discourses, especially the courtly discourse and the religious discourse, represented in The Art of Courtly Love, characterizing it as a polyphonic work. Among the various discursive elements, we prioritize to analyze those who reproduce, reinforce and divulge the relations of power and domination between men and between the sexes, in their different manifestations / Doutor
