Orientador: Helena Jank / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-27T00:26:48Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Esteves_ClaudioAntonio_M.pdf: 10002260 bytes, checksum: c92a190f687f190dda5ade9b48cf3e06 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2000 / Resumo: O conhecimento teórico de Padre José MauricioNunes Garcia, referência maior do Período Colonial Brasileiro, é ainda subestimado apesar de sua grande produção. The theoretical knowledge of Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia, the greatest reference of Brazilian Colonial Period, is still underestimated, in spite of the amount of his production. The edited works available to analysis are scarce, contributing to this view. The aim of this research is the study of the most relevant elements of writing in six vocal works of de capella type of the composer. Each of these six works are intended to SATB chorus with figured bass to the organ, are dated and subsist as original manuscript or copy from the period. They were edited from the Biblioteca Nacional's microfilms and submitted to harmonic and formal analysis, to constitute a compositional outlook. Composed from 1797 to 1809, these pieces mark important stages in composer's life and musical production considering that in 1798 he was registered as Mestre de Capela of Catedral da Sé and in 1808 arrived the Portuguese Court to Brazil. The resources employed by Father José Maurício in these few works, reveal a divergent picture of the simplistic evidence about the reality: a skilled composer, dominating the medium to which he produced and looked for improve himself throughout his frequent compositional task / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes

Georg Philipp Telemann's Use Of The Trumpet In Tafelmusik II-TWV 55: D1 (1733) Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by Kennan, Torelli, Chaynes and Others

Swisher, Eric 12 1900 (has links)
While trumpeters know him best for his concertos, Telemann included trumpets in his operas, cantatas, oratorios, orchestral music and mixed chamber music. This project will study the opening suite and conclusion of Tafelmusik II (TWV: D1, 1733) in order to examine his use of the trumpet in a mixed chamber work. Since Telemann was heavily influenced by his environment, the first chapter will focus on the city of Hamburg. As a major port, Hamburg's thriving economy gave rise to a wealthy merchant class, who were among Telemann's greatest supporters. The city boasted of many progressive elements: a democratic government, intellectual societies, foreign visitors, and a great love of music. This made Hamburg an ideal place for Telemann to work. The second chapter will provide an analysis of the movements: their forms, key structures, phrase organizations and orchestrations. After a brief explanation of the Baroque Trumpet, the third chapter will focus on Telemann's use of the trumpet in the work. Special attention will be paid to the methods which he employed to conceal the trumpet's tonal limitations and its relationship to the other instruments of the ensemble.

Individuality and Social Cohesion. Humboldt and Schleiermacher at the Origin of Modern Liberalism

Papcke, Luise January 2020 (has links)
In this dissertation I retrace the notion of social individuality in early German liberal thought to respond to the ongoing criticism of liberal individuality as being at its foundation anti-social and atomistic. I concentrate on the exposition of this concept in the works of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Friedrich Schleiermacher at the turn of the 18th to 19th century, who I argue presented the clearest defense of individuality understood as interdependent uniqueness. Analyzing their relevant academic writings, speeches, sermons, letters, diary entries as well as political reports, I situate their conceptualization of social individuality within their wider thought, and examine what social institutions and practices as well as political consequences derive from understanding individuality as inherently social.

Sharif, Maryam 21 January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is part of the rediscovery movement of women writers within literary history, who were long considered insignificant. Its aim is to study the status of a writer in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in France through the discovery and analysis of the life and career of Constance de Salm (1767-1845) whose works deal directly with the condition of the woman writers. The writer’s position is studied in relations to the status of the woman writers through her analysis of a subject from antiquity: Sappho (1797), the stance she took on a contemporary debate in the Epistle to the Women (1797), and finally the way in which she regards her own literary career in her autobiography in verse, My Sixty Years (1833). The goal is to show the reasons for which this writer was forgotten and then rediscovered, a writer whose avant-garde feminism contrasted with her literary practices that were considered antiquated even at the time. This study has revealed the originality of a woman writer who recognized and accepted the political implications embodied in her ideas and the act of writing. Furthermore, in order to clarify the position that Constance de Salm’s thoughts and actions occupied within intellectual circles of the day, we have reviewed texts in various states and their variants as well as articles and reports that the contemporary press dedicated to her. All these documents are attached as appendices in the second volume of this work.

Bodies of Knowledge: Fuseli and Girodet at the Turn of the Nineteenth Century

O'Rourke, Stephanie January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation situates the works of Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli and French artist Anne-Louis Girodet within a vast and heterogeneous epistemological transformation occurring in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It examines three distinct but interlocking case studies—physiognomy, electricity, and the guillotine—each of which constellates scientific discourses, representational practices, and popular attractions. Although working in separate contexts and different modalities, Fuseli and Girodet both engaged with these discourses and practices. Yet they did so in ways that also tested and undermined them. They painted bodies that emphatically failed to conform to the scientific discourses they cited; they painted bodies that were similarly unable to represent heroic virtues or legible narratives. In this way Fuseli and Girodet compel us to read the stylistic shift from neoclassicism to romanticism as participating in a significant realignment of the relationship between knowledge, representation, and the body. By the first decades of the nineteenth century, the body no longer served as a privileged agent of knowledge production within the scientific discourses and artistic practices under consideration. The physiognomic body was no longer self-identical; the electric body was no longer internally continuous. The guillotine offered, in their places, bodies without heads and heads without bodies, whose mechanisms of sensation and cognition were only ever partially and provisionally aligned.
