(1813-1881) / The aesthetical ideas and terminology through the Shugai (synthesis of calligraphy) by Liu Xizai (1813-1881)

Elbaz, Pascale 13 December 2014 (has links)
This project proposes to contextualize, translate and annotate the "Shugai 書概[Synthesis of calligraphy]" written by Liu Xizai 劉熙載 (1813-1881), a thoughtful scholar and calligrapher of the late Qing Dynasty. This treatise is an overview of calligraphic art and terminology of traditional Chinese aesthetic. The “Synthesis of calligraphy” details practices and concepts. It presents the jointure between the key terms of aesthetics and Chinese calligraphy. We will analyse how the history of writing styles and schools are presented and the way a work of art is judged, in its relations to the writter and to the viewer. We will open a discussion on the choice of images and metaphors to speak about the practice of calligraphy and reception of a work of art and how it originates in the specific artistic and aesthetic experience of the scholars in traditional China. Among these key terms, we will seek to analyze those of bodily origin. The core focus is the “Synthesis calligraphy”, that we will thoroughly translate, while engaging the entire Yigai [Treatise on the Arts] from which the “Synthesis of calligraphy” is a part and previous treatises to which it refers. The project also includes visuals: steles (bei) and rubbings of headstones and model calligraphy books (tie). This will allow us to match the descriptions and appreciations of the art pieces with the reality of visual works and to better understand how calligraphic practice and art were conceived and expressed at the end of imperial China before its encounter with Western art.

Goulet, Benoît 20 May 2021 (has links)

Introducing Christianity into Christendom : investigating the affinity between Søren Kierkegaard and the early thought of Karl Barth

Turchin, Sean A. January 2011 (has links)
The Swiss theologian Karl Barth’s (1886-1968) relation to the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is one which has been touched upon repeatedly with regard to influence and parallels. It is an issue that has produced diverse conclusions ranging from that of T. F. Torrance, who believed Barth to have been influenced by Kierkegaard to an extent even unknown to himself, to the likes of Bruce McCormack who views the affinity as exaggerated. However, this intriguing relationship refuses a conclusive position regarding the extent to which Barth had been influenced by Kierkegaard; any attempt that seeks to resolve this question disregards both the complexity of Barth’s thought and the sheer range of thinkers who had contributed to his theological development. Moreover, Barth’s own comments on the influence of Kierkegaard on his development complicate the investigation into the relationship between the two. Whereas in 1922 Barth admits a dependence on Kierkegaard in the second edition of The Epistle to the Romans, by 1963 he has assumed a more cautious relation to Kierkegaard.

Tapia Wende, Matías January 2014 (has links)

Closing doors (1780-1813): the liquidation process at General Company of Pernambuco and Paraíba / As portas não podem ser cerradas (1780-1813): processo de liquidação da Companhia Geral de Pernambuco e Paraíba

Silva, Angélica de Vasconcelos 01 June 2016 (has links)
This dissertation investigated the dynamics, rationales and context of accounting practices in a pre-industrial setting. By focusing on the case of the General Company of Pernambuco and Paraíba (PPC), the examination could analyze a firm\'s entire lifecycle (from the birth until decline) to answer the following research question: How and why did the PPC\'s liquidation process stretch for so long? The PPC was a privately owned company whose monopoly privilege was granted by the Portuguese Crown in 1759 and suspended in 1780. Between the removal of the monopoly rights and 1813, the company \'got stuck\' in a liquidation despite using double-entry bookkeeping. The study preserves the historical integrity of the analysis using the mental frame of the PPC own time. Based on the premise that accounting cannot be isolated from the setting in which it plays a role, four context issues were chosen to answer the research question: (1) the relationship between the PPC and the Crown, (2) the organizational structure of the PPC, (3) the accounting system of the PPC, and (4) the ties between PPC\'s stakeholders. It shows how and why each factor evolved over time and contributed to the delay in the PPC\'s liquidation. The examination relies upon different archival sources, including the surviving corporate books prepared at two of PPC\'s business units. The applied research design was a case study. The Crown acted as the head of the PPC but did not exercise close control over directors. The continuity of the business was financially more attractive for the directors than the liquidation process. The corporate rules, mainly remuneration, created incentives for their behavior. The seats on the boards of the PPC were controlled by a small group of shareholders. The directors changed some accounts\' rationales for their benefit, and the accounting procedures were realized without zeal. The issued financial statements also created an unreal financial situation (overvaluation) which directors insisted on realizing during the liquidation. The PPC granted credit based on fragile criteria and without sufficient guarantees. In the liquidation, when the company needed to convert the receivables into cash, the lack of guarantees caused additional delay / Esta tese investigou a dinâmica, lógica e contexto das práticas contábeis de uma empresa luso-brasileira do século XVIII ao longo de todo ciclo de vida (da instituição à liquidação).

The course will have some scales: (1) the chronological genesis of the category of despair; (2) the conceptual genesis of despair through notes -self, anguish, sin, subjectivity; (3) the category of despair in the Sickness Unto Death of 1849. The reason why Kierkegaard wrote so "swiftly" such a profound work, is that he had this subject, in his research agenda, since 1835, then at the age of 22. The themes of the nature and meaning of anguish and despair in relation to becoming the "self." The Sickness Unto Death is the "finish line" of the trajectory established by Kierkegaard for more than a decade, having despair as the fundamental clue of his anthropology / O eixo principal desse trabalho é investigar o processo da construção da categoria do Desespero em Kierkegaard, tendo como recorte, o período entre 1835 e 1849.
