A Comparison of the Transcription Techniques of Godowsky and Liszt as Exemplified in Their Transcriptions of Three Schubert LiederCloutier, David, 1948- 12 1900 (has links)
This investigation sought to compare the transcription techniques of two pianist-composers, Godowsky and Liszt, using three Schubert lieder as examples. The lieder were "Das Wandern" from Die Schöne Müllerin, "Gute Nacht" from Winterreise, and "Liebesbotschaft" from Schwanengesang. They were compared using four criteria: tonality, counterpoint, timbral effects, and harmony. Liszt, following a practice common in the nineteenth century, was primarily concerned with bringing new music into the home of the domestic pianist. The piano transcription was the most widely used and successful medium for accomplishing this. Liszt also frequently transcribed pieces of a particular composer in order to promulgate them by featuring them in his recitals. The Schubert lieder fall into this category. Liszt did not drastically alter the original in these compositions. Indeed, in the cases of "Liebesbotschaft" and "Das Wandern," very little alteration beyond the incorporation of the melody into the piano accompaniment, occurs.Godowsky, in contrast, viewed the transcription as a vehicle for composing a new piece. He intended to improve upon the original by adding his own inspiration to it. Godowsky was particularly ingenious in adding counterpoint, often chromatic, to the original. Examples of Godowsky's use of counterpoint can be found in "Das Wandern" and "Gute Nacht." While Liszt strove to remain faithful to Schubert's intentions, Godowsky exercised his ingenuity at will, being only loosely concerned with the texture and atmosphere of the lieder. "Gute Nacht" and "Liebesbotschaft" are two examples that show how far afield Godowsky could stray from the original by the addition of chromatic voicing and counterpoint. Godowsky*s compositions can be viewed as perhaps the final statement on the possibilities of piano writing in the traditional sense. As such these works deserve to be investigated and performed.

The Use of the Trombones in Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 9, and Schubert's Symphony No. 8Seifried, Denver Dugan 01 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this thesis will be to examine the orchestration of the trombone section in the Viennese symphonies of the early Romantic period. In order to fully understand the function of the trombone section in these syphonies, a review of the trombones usage in previous centuries is in order.

The Bifurcated Personalities of Christina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti as Reflected in Their "Sister Poems"Becherer, Nadine L. (Nadine Lee) 12 1900 (has links)
Christina Rossetti and Dante Gabriel Rossetti both suffered from ambivalent feelings concerning the role female sexuality plays in the salvation of the soul. These ambivalent feelings ranged from seeing female sexuality as leading men to salvation, to seeing it as a trap for the destruction of women's souls as well as men's. The contradictory feelings of the Rossettis' typifies the Victorian people's experience and was caused by the nature of the times. Using the analysis of the period by Walter E. Houghton in The Victorian Frame of Mind: 1830-1870, this paper describes the affect the Victorians' religious zeal, their "moral earnestness," and their "woman-worship" had on the two Rossetti poets.

"The Burden of the Image:" Jane Morris in Art and LifeAmos, Johanna 31 March 2014 (has links)
"'The Burden of the Image:' Jane Morris in Art and Life" examines the work and life of Pre-Raphaelite model Jane Burden Morris (1839-1914). Burden Morris, an embroiderer and wife of the arts and crafts designer William Morris (1834-96), became famous in her own lifetime as the model for a number of Pre-Raphaelite works, particularly the paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82). Although she was not considered conventionally beautiful by Victorian standards, artists drew heavily upon Burden Morris’s appearance, particularly her striking features and unusual artistic dress, in order to heighten the exoticism of their works and to suggest moments outside contemporary Victorian time and place. Burden Morris’s features became synonymous with the Pre-Raphaelite ideal in female beauty and several contemporaries reflected upon the surreal experience of meeting the enigmatic woman thought only to exist in paintings.
Borrowing from a material culture approach which views images as both reflective and formative of identity, this work considers the relationship between Jane Burden Morris and her painted representation, and focuses in particular on the works produced through Burden Morris’s long-standing collaboration with Rossetti. Through an examination of Burden Morris’s appearance, activities, and demeanour, this dissertation considers the aspects of Burden Morris’s identity which contributed to her use in numerous Pre-Raphaelite images, and further explores the way in which these paintings may have altered how Burden Morris conceived of her own identity. “The Burden of the Image” examines three dominant modes of representing Burden Morris, including depictions of Burden Morris as medieval damsel, myth, and monster. It also considers Jane Burden Morris’s role within the broader context of aestheticism, and explores her relationship to the artistic dress movement and the aesthetic interior. / Thesis (Ph.D, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2014-03-31 13:33:52.106

Ucwaningo lokuqhathanisa amanoveli omlando ka R.R.R. Dhlomo kanye nezibongo zamakhosi akwazulu ezaqoqwa uNyembezi (1958).Mazibuko, Gugulethu Brightness. January 2008 (has links)
This study aims to do a comparative analysis of the historical depiction of the Zulu kings
namely: King Shaka, King Dingane, King Mpande and King Cetshwayo. In this study
comparison is drawn between Dhlomo's historical novels and Nyembezi 's anthology of
praise poetry. This research is based on Interpretive paradigm because it emphasizes a
need for in-depth reading and analysis of the oral presentation. That is why qualitative
research methodology has been employed because it has allowed the researcher to
analytical skills on the content and interviews with community members.
In the analysis of these books; the researcher read; interpreted, compared and contrasted
the contents thereof. In the researchers comparative study; the researcher discovered that
there are some similarities and differences of content in the historical novels and praise
poetry writings. This research examined the publication (relevant to this study) written by
other authors about Zulu kings (these as deemed relevant for this research).
The study went on to verify authenticity around the contents of praise poetry regarding
these kings. Structured interviews were arranged and conducted; wherein it emerged that
most of king Shaka's, king Dingane's and king Mpande's history has somewhat faded
from the interviewee's memories. A lot of information was gathered around king
Cetshwayo. This study also revealed that most of Zulu king's history is somehow
distorted.Theories of Post-Colonialism and Orality were greatly employed during this research.
Post-Colonialism theory was deemed relevant because most of these writings were done
after the Zulus had been robbed of their land. Since praise poetry is oral art; an oral
historian had to be consulted to emphasize the rich heritage contained in orality or oral
art. It clearly emerged from this research that there is a lot of deliberate distortions of
Zulu kings' history. This distortion is not only by Whites but also some Black African
writers who still continue distorting the kings' history.
It is suggested that there be a revisitation and rewriting of the Zulu kings' history and this
be done taking into consideration past writings and interviews with knowledgeable
historians. A lot of knowledge is contained in this thesis that can be helpful to all and
sundry interested in historical writings and other literary genres. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2008.

This dissertation was carried out to evaluate the conception of art found in the works of Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto (1881-1922) and Leo Tolstoi (1828 -1910) according to a comparative point-of-view, in order to find out agreements and disagreements between them. Conception of art found in their works “O destino da literatura” and “O que é Arte?”. Both writers played the role of “sowers of ideas” and “beaters of the future” as they put up opposition to the so-called “literary mandarins”. An art oriented to the social issue, that is, a militant literature. Lima Barreto created a literary art which broke off the ties with conventional models in the turn of the 19th century, whose main representatives were Machado de Assis, Rui Barbosa, Coelho Neto, among others; Leo Tolstoi, in his turn, broke off the ties with Romantic poetry and French Realism. Both were utterly opposed to the esthetics of art for art’s sake. References to Russian writers are often found in Lima Barreto’s works, since he never omitted his readings. As early as his first novel Vida e Morte de M. J. Gonzaga de Sá, one can notice Leo Tolstoi’s influence. Influence which permeates all of his literary project and which is felt through the opposition both writers assume in connection with issues they have in common such as: Property, the Church, the State, women’s education, obligatory military draft, among others. Thus, they showed the axis they had in common: the anarchist belief system. But, mainly, because they pondered over the function and the making of literature.
