Manifestations of Wilhelm Busch's aesthetics in "Eduards Traum"Morris, Angelika 16 November 2010 (has links)
Whether considering Wilhelm Busch's famous picture-stories of poetic realism, or his prose works with their satiric grotesque and surrealistic elements, Busch's aesthetic views and practices straddle the divide between earlier and contemporaneous forms of art (folk tales, Classicism, Romanticism, Realism) and those akin to late nineteenth and early twentieth century German Moderne. In this thesis, Busch's aesthetic views on art and literature are gleaned from a variety of his writings including his mature prose piece Eduards Traum (1891). This study argues that Busch's aesthetics in this piece anticipated a number of developments associated with the German Moderne, such as complex narrative techniques, distorted states of time and space, ambiguity, fragmentation, and surrealistic modes of expression.

Yours faithfully; Werther for the English language stageStarrs, David Bruno January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Although numerous English literary translations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s ‘nobility in suicide’ - themed, epistolary, psychological and therefore “untheatrical” (Atkins 1949) novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774) have been published – none of the resultant English stage translations have ever been described as faithful to the original. The various obstacles to the creation of a faithful translation for the English language stage were analysed. The first obstacle is caution by Christian playwrights regarding the proscribed theme of nobility in suicide. Related to this is the second obstacle; the fear of producing ‘imitative’ suicides, which have been labelled ‘The Werther Effect’ by sociologists (Phillips 1974). Other obstacles are form-related rather than theme-related and include the absence of an authoritative English literary translation and the difficulties in translating to the stage the psychological and epistolary novel. With reference to Goethe’s three–tiered model of translation (translated by Lefevere 1977) and cinema academic Geoffrey Wagner’s ‘Three modes of adaptation’ (Wagner 1975) this writer has attempted to write a ‘prosaic’, ‘transpositional’ and unaugmented stage translation by identifying and addressing each of the obstacles, the hypothesis being that if these obstacles were systematically addressed and overcome, then an English language stageplay closely equivalent in meaning to the prominent ideas, themes and form of the novel – that is, a work arguably faithful to the novel – could be created. The research lead to the resultant creation The Sorrows and Sufferings of Young Werther; a Stageplay which is submitted as the creative work component (30%) of the writer’s Master of Creative Arts thesis at the University of Melbourne, Australia, in September 2003.

This dissertation intend to outline the underlying concepts of the Goethean opposition symbol-allegory (using his texts whose main theme concern to art, written between 1772 and 1798), in order to make them productive for literary analysis on passages from Elective Affinities and The Sorrows of Young Werther. Our work provides a background about the idea of sign in Goethe: we note the relationship his art established with nature and antiquity, as well as his effort to overcome the dependence of these two influences, aiming to achieve an autonom form of expression and thinking. The emergence of language as a being able to self-expression (and no more as a mean serving institutions) is a atributtion of the symbol also present in Goethe's theory. Following the suggestion of Todorov in Romantic crisis, we will link the pair symbol-allegory to the linguistic ideas of motivation and arbitrariness (respectively): Goethe inserts such intent in the philosophic line which discuss the possibility of a motivated origin to the language – started with “Cratylus's” Plato, and continued by authors of literary and linguistic theory, especially the ones who concern to the basis fundamenting poetic language. Arbitrariness and motivation, even nonexistent in Goethezeit, can be presented as concepts that clarify distinctions between symbol and allegory. A motivated or arbitrary origin for the language has found prominence since the Saussurean declaration that, as a whole, the sign is arbitrary – the founding principle of his science. In his theoretical writings, Goethe holds up a defense of the linguistic sign as essentially motivated – a concept that goes through nuances throughout his career and is linked to the concept of arbitrariness in language, culminating in the construction of conventionality in the sign. It embraces... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

This work begins with a translation of Lewis Carroll's - Euclid and His Modern Rivals - followed by two texts which intend to be an initial hermeneutical analysis of it. This book - of which had not yet a translation to Portuguese -, was written as a theoretical play and claims that there is no better textbook than the Elements of Euclid for teaching Mathematics. Carrol does his defense of Euclid in a period in which the Enghish educational system is going through and extended revision, a time when the reform parameters consider the possibility of changing the books of Euclid for another manual, so to speak, more modern, more practical and more representative of the transformations that characterize the end of the 19th century. In our two essays, among other aspects, we study the activity of translating, mobilizing translation theorists and some general elements of Lewis Carrol's works in Math and Literature. Considering necessary to understand how the book takes part in the history of the scientific ideas - or, in other words, trying to undestand it as a historical source -, an investigation was made about the moment in which it was written, its time and its space. From this approach it was possible to elaborate a text studying the scenario of the Victorian period, revealing aspects of what we think to be some personal experiments of the author. Both texts - which must be considered in the light of the translation to the Portuguese language - are presented as an introduction of Euclid and His Modern Rivals, an effort to understand it and to present it to Portuguese speakers

We present an analysis of the “First Part” of the work “Sulla Risoluzione Delle Equazioni Algebriche” (1852), Enrico Betti (1823–1892). Focusing on the Theory of Algebraic Equations, it can also be classified as works belonging to the early stage of the Theory of Groups, since the portion cited includes the so-called Theory of substitutions, which involves the concepts of permutation, permutation group, sub-group or sub-normal group, among others. We will present its mathematical content, linking it with the way today is studied, as well as the historical facts and mathematical results covered by the previous work cited, especially those that relate to the life and work of Evariste Galois (1811 -1832)
