Ménard, Ariane January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Zola, Personnage, Second Empire, Hypocrisie, Balzac.

Public opinion and the British Legion in Spain, 1835-1838

James, Richard, 1949- January 1996 (has links)
This thesis examines public opinion towards the participation opinion of the British Auxiliary Legion in the Spanish Civil War. It is based on an analysis of British newspapers, periodicals and political discussion between 1835 and 1838. It suggests that, although there was some degree of support for the foreign policy of Lord Palmerston in sending the legion to aid liberalism in the Peninsula, yet that support declined rapidly. In spite of Palmerston's eventual claim that intervention in Spain had been worthwhile, public opinion was not to reflect the view that his policy had been a right one, or that the British Auxiliaries had been indispensable to the cause of Spanish constitutionalism.

In the creation of the Brazilian Institute of History and Geography (IHGB) in 1838 with the aim of constructing the national history, a project was implicated for the establishment of originality for the newly independent nation that would legitimize Brazil as a singular country. Understanding that members of IHGB were in general also active participants in the policy of Imperial Brazil, this papers main objective is to consider what was produced by those members of IHGB has marks of reference and ideas from that area of politics in the period between 1838 to 1889. Thus, it explores how changes of interpretation in themes of the past - especially Portuguese colonization - could be present as alterations in the political circumstances occur (the unity and rightfulness of the nation and its territory, the affirmation of the authority of Pedro II, the "Conciliation" politics, the wars in Prata River area, slavery and the downfall of the Empire); or according to the individual who enunciate certain speech or defended his own particular interpretation of history. In this sense, the paper shows that at the same time IHGB engendered an intellectual work, in which there was room for questioning the adequacy of the writing of history, and different interpretations about the Empire were also conditioned. Giving preference to the reading of the Journal of IHGB, some memoirs made by the members, documents relating to the history of Brazil collected by them, and extracts from the minutes of the meetings held periodically were selected for the study. This material provides a glimpse of how members interpreted the history of Brazil, specifically giving the Portuguese past different images and different considerations: sometimes as a figure of valued participation, zealous protector of the territory; sometimes as a representative of a poorly organized colonization, bequeathing to independent Brazil several problems. These discrepancies were related to political issues of the Empire, as the search for legitimacy at the border of neighboring republics or the debates about the emancipation of slaves / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

La bête humaine : an examination of the problems inherent in the process of adaptation from novel to film

Wright, Barbara Irene January 1987 (has links)
In this thesis the process of adaptation from novel to film is examined. La Bête humaine by Emile Zola and the film version by Jean Renoir provide specific examples. The starting point is the assumption, often made by cinema audiences, that the film should be "faithful" to the novel upon which it is based. A statement made by Renoir regarding his efforts to be true to what he describes as the "spirit of the book" is quoted to illustrate the prevalence of this attitude. Novel and film are then compared in order to test Renoir's claim to fidelity. What is revealed are the differences between the two. Through an examination of character, action, and space some of the reasons for the director's departure from the novel begin to emerge and it becomes increasingly clear that Renoir was obliged to adopt a different approach. Theme and form are then examined and the organic nature of their relationship suggested. Finally, the departure of the film from the novel is traced to the very different ways in which the two media function — linearity in the written medium as opposed to simultaneity in the cinematic medium — and the indelible nature of the association of theme and form is confirmed. In conclusion, the view that the media should and do correspond is found to be mistaken, and Renoir's statement is re-evaluated and assessed as an attempt, by a director sensitive to the public's insistence on fidelity, to disarm criticism. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Abstract: This thesis attempts to clarify some particular aspects of Brazilian society. In order to do so, we chose as our research strategy the analysis of secondary sources, since discussing primary sources would exceed the possibilities of our doctoral work. As a work in sociology, our overall goal is to understand Brazilian society. As for our specific goal, as outlined in this doctoral thesis, it is to understand how the process of consolidation of Brazilian society took place, resulting as it was of European colonization and reaching its climax in the period known as "Segundo Reinado". Our methodology of choice was the analysis of secondary sources, namely, the analysis of Raymundo Faoro's intellectual production. Our strategy to pursue both our overall and specific objectives according to the chosen methodology was to analyze the relationship between two of Faoro's main published works, "Os Donos do Poder" and "A Pirâmide e o Trapézio". / Doutorado / Doutor em Sociologia

Seu livro Quadro Histórico da Província de São Paulo, primeiramente publicado em 1864, é seu trabalho definitivo sobre a história da província de São Paulo até o ano de 1822, em que ele trabalhou com suas ideias anteriormente publicadas na Revista do IHGB e em jornais, fazendo uma singular mediação entre teoria (narrativa histórica) e prática (a direção da Diretoria Geral) buscando absorver grupos indígenas para o interior da sociedade nacional, ou, pelo menos, reduzir o obstáculo que tais existências representavam para o desenvolvimento nacional / Abstract: The subject of this dissertation is the consideration about the relationship between historical narrative and administration of indigenous people, as well as the practical contribution of José Joaquim Machado de Oliveira, man of letters and Diretor Geral dos Índios of São Paulo, to the formation of the national state, especially regarding the questions of citizenship and land properties. His book Quadro Histórico da Província de São Paulo, first published on 1864, is his ultimate work about the history of São Paulo¿s province until the year of 1822, in which he handled his ideas, previously published by Revista do IHGB and newspapers, through singular mediation between theory (the writing of history) and practice (the management of the Diretoria Geral) seeking to absorb the indigenous groups in the national society, or, at times, to reduce the obstacle that their existence represented to the national development / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestra em História

What Went Wrong? How Arrogant Ignorance and Cultural Misconceptions Turned Deadly at the San Antonio Courthouse, March 19, 1840

Copeland, Cristen Paige 05 1900 (has links)
Although the Council House Fight is well written about in the annals of early Texas history, this all-encompassing study will reveal a whole new picture. Unlike previous works that maintained one point of view, multiple perspectives were analyzed and explored to allow a more comprehensive view of the Council House Fight to emerge. Primary focus on social and cultural misunderstandings, as well as the mounting hostility between the Penateka Comanche and Texians across the frontier, will demonstrate their general distrust and hatred of the other. Detailing their complicated relationship will prove that neither the Texians nor the Comanche were without blame, and both shared responsibility for the deterioration of events on and before March 19, 1840.
