Revolta, tráfico e escravidão no Correio Mercantil : Salvador, 1836-1849 / Rebellion, slave trade and slavery in Correio Mercantil : Salvador, 1836-1849

Negrão, Alessandra Pellegrino, 1986- 21 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Jefferson Cano / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-21T02:40:01Z (GMT). This work aims to analyze how the Bahia's newspaper Correio Mercantil, between the years of 1836 and 1849, ran articles about the free and slave revolts, the slave trade of Africans to Brazil and of slavery itself, trying to understand the political interests that determined these publications. To this end, we are interested to understand the influence of the rebellions in the period, and the ways in which they were conveyed, as well as the relationship that was established between free and slave revolts and the use of the fear of political elites of the province in relation to the large number of Africans and the colored population in Bahia. It is also important to understand how Correio understood the formation of Brazil in the post-independence, especially in regard to individuals who should build and be part of the identity of Brazil, the condition of citizenship and the institution of slavery. Finally, it is essential to examine how the newspaper approached the debates and proceedings arising from the 1831 law, which prohibited the slave trade to Brazil, and which interests their writers had in certain debates and vehicle news, silencing others. These lines of analysis have been developed in order to unveil the strategies of both arguments and production, used by Correio Mercantil in order to defend the maintenance of order, law, property and power relations of slavery / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

De la fourmi à l’atome : les sciences naturelles vues et vécues par Charles Janet (1849-1932) / From the ant to the atom : the natural sciences seen and experienced by Charles Janet (1849-1932)

Casson, Loïc 30 March 2018 (has links)
The French naturalist Charles Janet (1849-1932) is remained on the margins of the great scientific figures. However, the Academy of Sciences acknowledged some of his entomological works and nowadays, his atomic classification emerges in discussions of chemists. Graduated from Ecole Centrale, civil engineer and manufacturer in province, he was among other things, geologist, paleontologist, entomologist, biologist and chemist even if these disciplines reflect only a part of his research. Unsung and split in his specialities, his works have been very little studied and never in an overall view. Hence, the biography proposed here will go beyond these disciplinary divides. Through the own perceptions of Janet, we will engage our project towards the microhistory that gives us the way to observe the work of a scholar. It will be revealing some functions, uses and sociability of the local or national societies that arise in real scientific authority and we will examine their links with the Academy of Sciences. The main will be the Zoological Society of France of which Janet became president. In addition, he allows us to observe a macro-historical trend, which is that of the specialization and the marginalization of entomology. This will lead us to question the classic duality 'professionals versus amateurs' among scientists. Thanks to his polyvalency, his long career both off and in the official science, Janet is a privileged witness of the natural sciences at the turn of the 19th century. Trace Janet’s life and work, is observing science through the anonymous people who might be raised for a while at the level of the glories of their era. If this research reflects the practices of an unsung scientist, it represents paradoxically (in our view) most of the naturalists of his time.

Forms in the Chopin Ballades

Driggers, Orin Samuel 08 1900 (has links)
The term ballade is the French and German spelling of the English word "ballad" and the Italian ballata. Although each of these terms is derived from the Latin ballare, meaning "to dance," each denotes an entirely different meaning. The synonomous usage of these terms is definitely misleading (1,p. 67), Frederic Chopin, 1810-1849, was first to use this term as a title for piano compositions. The purpose of this study is to reveal the formal characteristics of each of the four ballades that Chopin wrote for solo piano and to determine, through a comparison of the similarities and differences, some identifying characteristics of a ballade. These characteristics will be illustrated through a formal analysis of each ballade.

Edgar Allan Poe's Journey and Abyss Motifs: Order vs. Disorder

Raffety, Duane N. 05 1900 (has links)
The key to an understanding of what Poe attempted to accomplish with his art lies in his depictions of order and disorder in the universe. Poe's explorations of order and disorder revolve around journey and abyss motifs exemplified in his imaginative approaches toward nature, conscience, art, intuition, and apocalypse. These imaginative approaches serve to unify Poe's- work as a whole and emphasize his importance as a questing artist who not only sought to define the shape of reality in terms of stability and chaos but also sought to formulate a final metaphysical ordering of chaos and finitude.

Charles Baudelaire's translations of Edgar Allan Poe

Semichon, Laurent January 2003 (has links)
Although one of the best-known cases of intercultural literary partnership, Charles Baudelaire's translations of Edgar Allan Poe's works have been little analysed with a methodology appropriate to Translation Studies. Relying on a functionally target-oriented approach to translation and an empirical methodology, the present thesis undertakes this analysis. Positioning the prospective function(s) of the translations as intended by the translator within their historical context, Chapter One explores the para-discourse of the translator and its contemporary reception. Beyond the Romantic critical tradition of the whole project, Baudelaire's introductory writings on Poe appear to target in a propagandist way the literary elite of the time. On the contrary, the selection and organization of the five volumes of translations for publication suggest primarily a popularising strategy intended to capture, through the fictional genre, the attention of the growing mass audience of the Second Empire. In Chapters Two and Three, traditional appraisals of the translations in terms of quality assessment are questioned in favour of an explanation of interpretative frameworks and translation strategies as seen through the analyses of two translated tales and of textual variables throughout the corpus. Baudelaire's biographical interpretation of the narrative voice combines with clear strategies to normalize the stylistic authority of the texts and to increase their dramatic and expressive impact, offering in the end a less rhetorical, but aesthetically more Romantic and narratively more Realist reading of Poe's fantastic tales. Baudelaire would thus have managed to reconcile at a textual level the ambiguities of his para-discourse in terms of targeted readership as seen in Chapter One. It is finally argued that beyond the constraints of the receiving system and the strategies of the translator to accommodate these, the French image of Poe as produced by Baudelaire owes much to a French resistance to the narrative ambiguity and style that Poe's writing represents. Confirming or challenging existing criticism on the Poe-Baudelaire case, the present thesis thus hopes to contribute, not only to our relatively limited knowledge of mid-nineteenth-century French translation, but also to our understanding of French short fiction and its conflicting stakes in terms of aesthetics and readership.
