We focus our attention on the actions of doctors who took part in the commission of public relief, the two priests who worked in the village during the illness and the action of public administrators. We aim to understand the disease and its meaning from a broader reading than was the village of Maranguape in 1862, the medical theories that guided and the answers given by religion. To bring out such a venture, we use varied character documents such as reports of the provincial president, letters sent by the commissioned doctors, letters of the priests and members of the chamber of the village, provincial laws, newspapers and chronicles.

This dissertation aims to study six short stories - The Sphynx, A Tale of Jerusalem, The Devil in the Belfry, Mistification, The Spectacles, and Some Words with a Mummy - by the American fictionist, poet, and critic Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), world wide known as the father of the modern short story, in order to analyze how the author builds humor and satire and to what extent they constitute an ambivalent satire to his social millieu. The analyses reveal the existence of the author's compromise with the society of his time, which is manifested in his fictional creation by means of the satire and criticism of the exaggerations of XIXth century American ideology.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work analyses the journey of Joaquim Nabuco, aiming to understand the terms of his republican conversion and of his commitment to the cause of pan-americanism. For this purpose, it focus his intellectual and political action, since he joined the Law Academy in 1866, until his death, in 1910. It comes to the conclusion that the defense of the proximity between Brazil and United States must be comprehended from a shift in Nabuco's worries, from the construction of citizenship to the protection of national sovereignty. This change, far from representing a detour, drives to the continuity of his project of construction and development of the Nation-State.

Linguagens do abolicionismo no Brasil : a nação no ideário político de Joaquim Nabuco / Languages of abolitionism in Brasil : the nation on the political ideology of Joaquim Nabuco

The piece of work presented here attempts to grasp and analyze the ways in which the idea of nation appears in the abolitionist trajectory of Joaquim Nabuco. More precisely we try to demonstrate, in basing part of the contemporary debate on the subject, some of the possible ways in which the idea of nation has in the political writings and speeches of the author. Thus, our purpose will be undertaken with a view of double interpretation which configures part of the current controversy surrounding the political and intellectual trajectory of Nabuco: sometimes regarded as a precursor of the bourgeois revolution in Brazil, now regarded as a thinker of the Empire / Mestrado / Ciencia Politica / Mestre em Ciência Política

The basilisk and its antidote : a study of the changing image of Chopin in literature

Wootton, Alice Carolyn May January 1970 (has links)
One area related to Fryderyk Chopin which has received little attention is his influence upon literature. In order to develop two aspects of this theme a key word "basilisk" has been introduced which Robert Schumann as music critic used in explaining the unusual impression that Chopin's music first presented on the printed page. This word, with its overtones both magical and ominous, suggests the symbol for the growing wave of aestheticism with which the cult of Chopin came to be associated. Translated into literature the expression of the Chopin cult found its way into the early writings of Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, and John Galsworthy. Later, as the twentieth century progressed and the pendulum swung in a new direction for the arts and for literature, a suitable antidote to the basilisk was to be found in the parody of the Chopin cult offered by T. S. Eliot in his "Portrait of a Lady" and in "Chopin" by Gottfried Benn, which explores the use of biography in a poem, and moves away from the extreme subjectivity of many nineteenth-century portrayals of the Polish composer. It is the purpose of this study to trace the changing image of Chopin in a selection of literary works which belong to the period between 1890 and 1950. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate
