Unlikely Partners: Collaboration Between Colonizationists and Radical Abolitionists in Washington County, Pennsylvania, during the 1830sSmydo, Joseph Andrew 17 May 2016 (has links)
In the scholarly literature, colonizationists and radical abolitionists are portrayed as composing perpetually warring camps. While that may have been true at the state and national levels of the movements, the evidence suggests that the relationship between the groups was much more fluid at the grassroots. In Washington County, Pennsylvania, colonizationists and radical abolitionists cooperated on various community-development initiatives during the 1830s. Slavery was important to these community elites. But other issues were just as important to them, if not more. / McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts; / History / MA; / Thesis;

Using Words to Break the Chains of Bondage: Examining the Political Narratives of American SlavesYellen, Bailey 01 January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the narratives of five formerly enslaved men and women in order to understand how they used this literary form to insert their voices into the anti-slavery discourse. These slave narratives were important for the advancement of the anti-slavery movement, both because they provided glimpse into the realities of the system of slavery from individuals who experienced it, and because these texts questioned the very ideologies they were meant to uphold by highlighting their inherent racial prejudices. Ultimately, the slave narrative allowed these formerly enslaved authors to demonstrate their autonomy through the act of authorship.

The Paradox of Theodore Parker: Transcendentalist, Abolitionist, and White SupremacistKelley, Jim 16 December 2015 (has links)
Theodore Parker was one of the leading intellectuals and militant abolitionists of the antebellum era who has been largely overlooked by modern scholars. He was a leading Transcendentalist intellectual and was also one of the most militant leaders of the abolitionist movement. Despite his fervent abolitionism, his writings reveal an attitude that today we would call racist or white supremacist. Some scholars have argued that Parker's motivation for abolishing slavery was to redeem the Anglo-Saxon race from the sin of slavery. I will dispute this claim and explore Parker's true understanding of race. How he could both believe in the supremacy of the white race, and at the same time, militantly oppose African slavery. Parker was influenced by the racial "science" of his era which supported the superiority of the Caucasian race. Conversely he also believed that everyone, including African slaves, had human dignity.

"That Sublime Mingling of Races:" Abolitionist Support for Interracial MarriageBoyd, Charles O. 07 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines abolitionist support for interracial marriage. It demonstrates that far from being a marginal viewpoint within the movement, support for interracial marriage was widespread among both black and white abolitionists. Many abolitionists stated they personally did not recommend interracial marriage at present due to the backlash couples would face, while also denying that it was unnatural or immoral. A few abolitionists eschewed such a disclaimer. A few also married people of different races themselves. To a considerable extent, defense of interracial marriage was part of a larger push for racial integration and equality. This thesis also looks at British abolitionists who criticized the American stigma against interracial marriage, and children and grandchildren of abolitionists who defended interracial marriage, the most prominent being the famous, controversial lawyer, Clarence Darrow.

Geografia da escravidão na crise do Império: Bananal, 1850 - 1888 / Geography of slavery during the crisis of Imperial Brazil: Bananal, 1850-1888Santos, Marco Aurelio dos 30 April 2014 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the uses of plantation space as a central tool to slaveholders domination and the strategies used by slaves to resist it. Studying the county of Bananal, an important town of coffee production in the nineteenth century, the work focuses on the understanding of the space as a crucial vector to produce control over free men and slaves. Nonetheless, slaves usually challenged slaveholders. In this way, they used to apply their knowledge about the uses of the permitted and prohibited times and spaces in order to act against and resist slaveholders impositions. In this work, the Geography of slavery is related to the dialectic between slave uses of plantation space and the controls made by slaveholders and their agents. This relation provoked many conflicts and this shed light to the issue of slave resistance and their reaction to power. Therefore, it is possible to comprehend a new dynamics of slave resistance. On the other hand, the research is not simply a case study, because slavery in Bananal and its geographical corollaries were intertwined with the moment of crisis of slavery in Imperial Brazil. For this reason, it was possible to figure a new dimension of geography, related to the networks developed by the subjects beyond the limits of the municipality

Towards A Radical Feminist Change: The Empowerment Of Survivors From Prostitution, Transgression Of Normativities And The Abolition Of Power Differences.DEFFOIN, Emilie January 2014 (has links)
This master thesis is an attempt to illustrate the role of a feminist and abolitionist organization towards the enhancement of women’s social conditions and their representation in society. The study is based on my three months training at an Icelandic organization, Stígamót, which is an “Education and Counselling Centre for Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Violence”. My stay there included a series of interviews with social workers and survivors of prostitution and sexual trafficking. The centre has a multi-faceted approach, using feminist empowerment as a methodological process for the purpose of increasing the quality of life. Together with feminist theories on intersectionality and empowerment as methodological tools, I am researching the relations between survivors’ empowerment, their agency, with a radical political change, leading to gender-equal society.
