Investigation of the forces produced by impact

Brown, W. C. January 1929 (has links)
An important problem confronting the designer of machines and structures which may be subjected to suddenly applied loads is the determination of the actual forces which the members must withstand. This investigation has been confined to a study of impact forces on beams in simple flexure. Margerum (American Society of Testing Materials, 1922) suggested a method whereby the maximum load might be found by obtaining indentations on a calibration bar attached to the moving head of the impact machine, and suggested using this in conjunction with an autographic stress strain diagram. Tests have been made upon both notched and unnotched bars, but the results were not satisfactory. It has been proposed that an accelerometer be designed with which the acceleration could be measured directly. After the acceleration is known the force producing the acceleration can be calculated. The acceleration of a point can be determined by a double differentiation of a space-time diagram. This method is being employed in this thesis. / M.S.

The Neubauer method as a means of determining the fertilizer requirements in certain Virginia soils

Earley, Ernest Benton January 1929 (has links)
Rye seedlings grown on differently fertilized plats at Chatham, Virginia, and at Fishersville, Virginia, for the year 1928, and tested by the Neubauer seedling method for phosphorus gave no clue to the amount and availability of the phosphatic fertilizer added. Therefore, the Neubauer seedling method as devised by Neubauer did not prove to be of value in determining the phosphorus availability of Virginia soils under the conditions prevailing in 1928. / M.S.

Factors influencing germination and growth of sweet clover

Farmer, Alfred B. January 1929 (has links)
Sweet clover plants become more susceptible to low temperatures as they advance in age. They are most resistant when in the crook stage. Plants resulting from unhulled seed are more vigorous and resistant to low temperatures than are plants resulting from scarified seed. Plants from unhulled seed produce larger bay yields and more profits than do similar plants resulting from scarified seed. Soils containing a medium percentage of moisture afford more optimum conditions for plant growth than do soils of extremely low or high moisture content. There is an indication, but not conclusive, that the physiological activity of seedlings from scarified seed is slightly more rapid than is the ease of imhulled seedlings. Alternate freezing and thawing of impermeable sweet clover seed, or treating with concentrated sulphuric acid, does not increase, to any significant degree, the percentage of germination. It seems that the subjection of seed to a moist condition is just as effective as any attempt to increase germination by artificial means. / M.S.

Delco light investigation

Koontz, L. L. January 1929 (has links)
The object of this investigation is to make a comprehensive study and obtain reliable information on the possibilities and limitations of an isolated electric light plant; operating cost will be determined with practical equipment to be used in connection with same, under actual farm conditions. The study was made on "Sandy Mound Farm" owned and operated by Mr. W. E. Hubbard. The farm is located two and one-half miles from Blacksburg, Virginia, near Shadow Lake. It consists of about 180 acres of crop land and 60 acres or woods. Mr. Hubbard operates a 20-cow dairy and sells cream to the southern Dairies at Christiansburg, Virginia. A complete farm management study was made of this farm as a Minor Problem. The subject of this study is the new Four Cylinder Delco Light plant, Model No. 178, generating unit, end 160 amphers an hour battery. / M.S.

Studies of Hypoderma lineatum and Hypoderma bovis with especial reference to economic importance and control

Case, Leland Irving January 1929 (has links)
1. Hypoderma lineatum and Hypoderma bovis are prevalent in Burkes Garden and Southwestern Virginia generally. 2. Young cattle, calves and yearlings particularly, are generally more heavily infested than older cattle. 3. Adults appear in Burkes Garden the first warm days in April though they are at their worst in June and July, a normal season. 4. Larvae ordinarily make their first appearance in the subcutaneous tissues of the back about the first of December. The first ones emerge and pupate about the middle of January. 5. At the time control was started H. lineatum exceeded H. bovis in the ratio of 65 to 35 percent. The ratio now is 55 to 45 percent. 6. Salt, wet or dry, is an ineffective dressing for killing Hypoderma larvae in the subcutaneous tissues of the host. 7. Benzol, 90 or 100 percent, injected into larval cysts effects a high percentage of kill. 8. Hand extraction at intervals of 30 days repeated five times is a practical and effective means of control. 9. Hand extraction performed by the average farm worker caused an occasional case of anaphylaxis, .037 percent 10. Cooperative control measures, to be effective, should be supervised closely. 11. Extraction of Hypoderma larvae from the subcutaneous tissues of the host effects gains in weight and milk flow advantageously. 12. Control measures as practiced in Burkes Garden has reduced Hypoderma infestation by approximately 50 percent. / M.S.

Entre la bohemia y el crimen : la identidad performativa en el Diario Antuerpense de Julio Ramón Ribeyro

García Marengo, Sebastián Andrés 15 August 2011 (has links)
Tesis
