A study of the effects of different rates of liming on soil reaction and growth of certain crop plants

Gish, Peyton T. January 1931 (has links)
(1) The experiment as a whole showed that pH determinations may be made at any time throughout the year with assurance of being reliable as a relative indicator of lime requirement. (2) A comparison of the pH determinations made in 1928 with those made in 1930-31, show that the plats have become more acid. (3) The pH values of the soil paralleled the quantity of lime applied. Where no lime was applied the soil was found to be very acid, but increasing applications of lime brought the reaction gradually to the neutral point. (4) There appears to be a definite relation between pH and crop yield. For each crop the yields increased up to a certain pH; beyond which they decreased again. The optimum pH for the crops grown in the experiment reported here are as follows; Alsike clover 5.8 Red clover 6.3 Sweet clover 6.5 Soybeans 6.3 Wheat 6.2 Barley 6.2 Rye 5.9 Corn 6.3 Potatoes 5.4 / M.S.

Arguing from identity: ontology to advocacy in Charles Taylor's political thought

Sadian, Samuel Dominic January 2009 (has links)
In this thesis I discuss three normative claims that I take to be central elements of Charles Taylor’s political thought. The first of these is Taylor’s contention that, in contemporary pluralistic societies, justifying socially prevailing norms by appealing to universally binding moral values is unlikely to promote social solidarity. Because this approach tends to downplay the goods that people realise through membership in particular associations, Taylor believes we must adopt a model of justification that does not prioritise universal over particular goods if we are to further social co-operation. A second claim Taylor defends is that commitment to the liberal value of collective self-rule implies treating patriotically motivated public service as a non-instrumental good. We should not, Taylor argues, regard collective association as nothing more than a means to satisfying private goals. Taylor advances a third claim, that is, he maintains that liberal toleration for diverse ways of life may require a perfectionist state that supports particularistic ways of life when they are threatened by decline. I offer a qualified defence of the first two claims, but suggest that the third is less compelling. I attempt to do this by evaluating Taylor’s claims against the standards of lucid argumentation that he himself lays down. In discussing social and political norms, which he describes as “advocacy” issues, Taylor argues that our normative commitments necessarily rely on an underlying social ontology. More specifically, Taylor argues that the political values we defend are those that enable us to secure the interests we have as the bearers of an identity possessing both individual and collective dimensions. In setting out the conditions that favour integrated and free identity formation we may thereby reach a clearer understanding of the political norms that we wish to endorse. I argue that, while Taylor’s ontological reflections might well incline us to accept his model of justification and his account of patriotic social commitment, they do not of themselves dispose us to accept state perfectionism.

THE EVANGELISTIC EMPHASIS IN THE PASTORAL PREACHING OF ADRIAN P. ROGERS

Yelton, Johnny Derrick 31 December 2013 (has links)
Johnny Derrick Yelton, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chairman: Dr. J. D. Payne This dissertation examines the evangelistic content of the pastoral preaching of Adrian P. Rogers during his thirty-two years of ministry at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis and explains the purpose, goals, limitations and methodology of this study. Chapter 2 examines the significant events and people in the life of Rogers that influenced and shaped his passion for evangelistic preaching. This chapter provides a brief biography of Rogers that discusses his conversion and call to the ministry, his education in college and seminary, his pastoral ministry, his broadcast ministry, and his denominational leadership. It also identifies the characteristics demonstrated by Rogers that contributed to his effective evangelistic preaching ministry. Chapter 3 examines the sermon preparation, organization, and delivery skills of Rogers. The objective of this chapter is to identify the homiletical style of Rogers' sermons with a focus upon his expository methodology. This chapter provides a study of the functional elements of Rogers' sermons, and identifies nine characteristics of evangelistic preaching reflected in Rogers' preaching. Finally this chapter considers the hermeneutical integrity of the sermons of Rogers in order to determine if he forced an evangelistic meaning into a text and thereby twisted the intent of the original author of the text. Chapter 4 examines the evangelistic invitation of Rogers. This chapter provides a brief background regarding the origin of the evangelistic invitation and the criticism of some evangelicals regarding its historical and modern usage. The focus of this chapter, however, is upon the methodology of Rogers. This chapter addresses any problems and concerns regarding the evangelistic invitations of Rogers and it identifies the components and characteristics of Rogers' evangelistic invitation. Chapter 5 is a study of the evangelistic content of Rogers' sermons. The goal of this chapter is to determine how often Rogers actually preached an evangelistic sermon from the pulpit of Bellevue Baptist Church. This chapter begins with a definition of evangelistic preaching, and provides a methodology for measuring the evangelistic content of Rogers' sermons based upon this definition. Next, this chapter offers an evaluation of the evangelistic content discovered in the sermons of Rogers, and gives a critical analysis of the evangelistic preaching ministry of Rogers based upon these findings. Finally, this chapter provides recommendations for an effective evangelistic preaching ministry. Chapter 6 gives a conclusion to this study. This chapter addresses the importance of evangelistic preaching in the church. Furthermore, it introduces the discoveries made from this study and gives a summary of those discoveries. It also outlines an application of the strengths of Rogers' evangelistic preaching ministry. Finally, it identifies areas for further study in the future. This dissertation also contains two appendices. The first appendix includes significant material regarding one hundred sermons by Rogers including an outline of each sermon and an assessment of the evangelistic content of each sermon. The second appendix provides an example of a gospel presentation and sinner's prayer used in the publication materials of Love Worth Finding Ministries.

The Noelista Center in Paraíba is a movement of the branch "Le Noel" that originated in France in the late nineteenth century, by Father Paul Bailly and founder of the movement and also Father Claude Allez. The movement was created in the context of reorganization of the Catholic Church (the process of Romanization) that had as main objective to fight the deviant aspects of modernity. Noel was brought to Brazil in 1914 for the city of Recife and spread through several states of Brazil in the following years, with the core state of Pernambuco and vice core the state of Rio de Janeiro and settled in Paraiba year 1931. Among the movement of the main features in Brazil, stand out: the assistantiality, catechesis, charity and the formation of individual and collective faith. This paper focuses specifically on the analysis of texts produced by noelistas in the Paraiba, because these texts possible to understand debates about family life that report the main dilemmas of the period as virginity, marriage, work, motherhood, etc. Therefore, it is done in this research the intersection between the influences of what would be considered modern for the time and conservative family values postulated by the Catholic Church to understand how this "ideal type" of family adapted to the new models and winds of modernity. So when do these two texts is a privilege, it is possible to dive through the poems that has a character novelists tangles of sensations and dilemmas that relate to the concepts of affection, sociability and religion among the families of the twentieth century.

This research aims to analyze the work of children's literature from the Brazilian writer Ruth Rocha. Its corpus is made one hundred eighty-four works published by the author in the period from 1969 to 2013. This search is developed in two directions: first, it is proposed to inventory the author¿s production through the data collection as the release date of the works, available editions, topographical features and textual, seeking to know the general characteristics of this production. And a second that after selecting the most representative features and changes found in the works, aims to understand how these aspects reveal conceptions of children's literature by the author and producer of books and how readers reveal a prerequisite for a work, who wants to win. The research is based on the theoretical framework of cultural history, especially in studies conducted by Chartier (1990, 2001) regarding the protocols included in the text in an attempt to control the reading and representations of the world suggested the same. Also important was the contribution of studies Bakhtin (2003) regarding to responsive aspect of all discourse and influence the receiver and production conditions about the statement, as well as studies in the field of literature as those by Arroyo (1968), Lajolo (2005) and Zilberman (2005, 2006), which helped establish relationships between the data obtained social and historical context in which the works were produced. Considering the teacher as privileged reader of books for children and as a subject that selects most of the works read by them, that this research intends to discuss this production to contribute to the debate about literature-reading-school / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestra em Educação

Adam, Bassam 05 November 2021 (has links)

Desaulniers, Claude-Michèle 24 April 2018 (has links)

Portilla Durand, Luisa Prisciliana January 2017 (has links)
Tesis
