Rivet, Isabelle. January 2000 (has links)
This thesis attempts to address different problems pertaining to the concept of subject. These problems might appear remote from one another, but their juxtaposition reveals possible interactions that yield rich avenues of research. The ensuing dialogue provides an interesting portrait of the contemporary subject. / Enunciation theories are the point of departure of this thesis. They contend that the subject constructs itself in and by discourse. A link is then made with certain problems put forward by Charles Taylor who also sets the contemporary subject in discourse, seen as essential material for its construction. The elaboration of a personal morality is the foundation of what he calls the self. / The exploration of these problems draws our attention toward some questions which are tackled in the two last chapters. The first question concerns the mode of construction of the subject. In accordance with our modern episteme, the subject constructs itself as narrative. The second question aims at understanding the role of the Other in the construction of the subject. The contact with the Other and the recognition of this difference are the motors of this construction.

Anachronistic impulses in Carl Nielsen's Woodwind Quintet (1922)

Tan, Daphne. January 2007 (has links)
Despite its enduring popularity in performance circles, Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet, op. 43 (1922), has received little attention from the scholarly community. This thesis provides the most comprehensive examination of the work to date and includes original analyses of each of the three movements. Moreover, it illuminates and defines stylistic trademarks that are found not only in this piece, but also within Nielsen's oeuvre more broadly. These traits include the weakening of tonal design, the liberal use of chromatic harmonies, contrapuntal writing, and the allusion to and distortion of traditional forms. This thesis highlights Nielsen's synthesis of traditional and idiosyncratic elements and thereby situates his music amid an emerging trend in European compositions of the time: the anachronistic use of historical models (Hyde).

Reforming the self Charles Taylor and the ethics of authenticity

Sherman, Edward David. January 2001 (has links)
Concerned with the state of the self in modernity, Charles Taylor engages in an act of cultural retrieval in order to allow for a meaningful struggle against the pernicious developments of the modern age. To avoid a loss of meaning, rampant instrumentality, and ultimately a loss of freedom, Taylor suggests that we must arrive at a new understanding of the self. To this end Taylor positions himself between contemporary liberals and communitarians, arriving at what he deems holistic individualism or an "ethic of authenticity". He holds that, in order for this notion of authenticity to be realized, we must be in contact with the constitutive goods which underpin western society. After prolonged consideration Taylor arrives at the conclusion that the only publicly available constitutive good in the modern age is religion. Although he is at times hesitant to admit it, Taylor contends that religion is an invaluable source for the self and the only good able to meet the challenges of modernity.

A pedagogical analysis of selected chamber works for the flute by Carl Nielsen

Lunte, Sandra K. January 1993 (has links)
Carl Nielsen, considered by some to be Denmark's greatest composer, has had great influence on twentieth-century Danish music. Nielsen wrote several chamber works that include the flute, three of which were examined in this study. These pieces, "The Fog is Lifting" (for flute and piano or flute and harp), "The Children are Playing" (for flute alone) and "Faith and Hope are Playing" (for flute and viola) are part of the incidental music for the Helge Rode patriotic drama "The Mother." "Fantasy Pieces, op. 2," originally written for oboe and piano, was transcribed for flute and piano by James Galway, and is also discussed in this study. The purpose of this research was to conduct a detailed examination of these works with regard to pedagogical, performance and compositional concerns. Information was gathered through the examination of written materials about Nielsen, results of questionnaires sent to selected flute pedagogues, results of coaching sessions with three flutists and comparisons of three recordings. Questionnaires revealed that many pedagogues were not familiar with the pieces in question. Varying responses were provided to questions regarding the level of proficiency needed to study these pieces, appropriate situations in which to program the works, why the pieces are not often programmed and pedagogical concerns. Coaching sessions revealed potential pedagogical problems, while recordings provided information regarding differences in interpretation. Compositional traits of Nielsen are discussed, as are additional pedagogical suggestions for students with little experience. / School of Music

López Esteve, Manel 27 June 2012 (has links)
The events of October 1934 have been one of the most controversial and difficult to explain issues of the history of the Second Republic in Catalonia. This dissertation presents an explanation and a description of the Catalan October that, along with the action of the Catalan government and the institutional conflict, provides all its dimensions and its diversity of components. Based on the multiform nature of the mobilization and that the events of October have to explained by the fear of the left forces that the rise in the government of CEDA would lead to the annihilation of the democratic Republic, this thesis presents an explanation of the events of October focused on the social conflict and socio-political confrontation, and on the fear of losing the profits made and the expectations that many of the subaltern classes considered possible through deepening or going beyond the Republic of April 14. The dissertation analyzes thus the action of the Catalan government and the institutional conflict but especially the social and popular dimension of October 6 through the action of the working class movement, the “rabassaires” and poor peasants, the basis of left Catalanist republicanism and the repression after the defeat.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The problem confronted in this work is that of the possibility of application of justice in face of the recognition of the structurally indeterminate character of the modern law, having in sight the exhaustion of the explaining force of the positivist theories. Challenging both the irrational belief that rationally elaborated legal texts could reduce the complexity of the interpretative task and the decisionist skepticism, Ronald Dworkin aims at rescuing the belief in the normative force of rights, turning upside down the epistemic pureness intended by the positivism and restoring the plausibility of the concept of justice in post-metaphysical and post-conventional terms, defending that the attitude to be adopted by those who apply the law must be that of searching the one right answer required by the legal system in its integrity. The reflective rescue of the normative content of the modernity and the proper idea of reason is considered essential for the understanding of the role of principles in contemporary legal reasoning, in the legitimate basis of democracy and in the development of reflexive ethics. The theory of Ronald Dworkin will be the conducting wire of the analysis undertaken, for its approach that seeks simultaneously to validate both the claim to justice and to legal certainty. The understanding of the existing tension between basic norms, and the debate with theories that comprehend principles as being essentially incompatible will be of great importance for the conclusions of the work, that it will then try to demonstrate that even in decisions where a balancing of values is explicitly defended, the search for rightness, in the sense described, is present and plays a decisive role in the understanding of the normative requirements of legal principles.
