The Early Work (1916-1938) of Austin Clarke

Riordan, Maurice 03 1900 (has links)
Austin Clarke dedicated himself to the ideal of an independent Irish literature in English. This dedication had two principal consequences for his work: he developed a poetic style appropriate to expressing the Irish imagination, and he found inspiration in the matter of Ireland, in hex mythology and folklore, in her literary, artistic and religious traditions, and in the daily life of modern Ireland. The basic orientation of Clarke's work determines the twofold purpose of this thesis. It seeks to provide a clarifying background for his poetry, drama and fiction up to 1938; and, in examining the texts in their proper context, it seeks to reveal the permanent and universal aspects of his achievement. Clarke's early development in response to the shaping influence of the Irish Revival is examined in the opening chapter. His initial interest in heroic saga is considered, but, principally, the focus is on his effort to establish stylistic links between the Anglo-Irish and the Gaelic traditions, an effort that is seen to culminate with his adoption of assonantal verse as an essential element in his poetic technique. In the second chapter, the emphasis shifts to the thematic consequences of Clarke's involvement with Ireland. His understanding of Irish tradition is discussed, and, in particular, the origins and nature of his imaginative preoccupation with the culture of early Christian Ireland are examined. What emerges is that Clarke perceives a permanent tension in the Irish mind between the Christian and the pagan viewpoints, a conflict of values that he termed the drama of conscience. The conflict informs each of the major texts analysed in the remainder of the thesis. Pilgrimage and Other Poems, discussed in the second chapter, reveals the recurrence of the tension between the Christian and the pagan traditions in the course of Irish history. Clarke's early plays and novels, which are the focus of the third chapter, relate the conflict to the culture of medieval Ireland. The fourth chapter examines Clarke's own experience cf the conflict as it is presented in Night and Morning. In the recognition that the drama of conscience remains a vital element in Clarke's imagination after 1938, the thesis concludes by indicating the main lines of continuity between the earlier and the later work. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

An investigation of the effects of the partial loading of concrete during the early curing period on the twenty-eight day ultimate strength

Salgo, Michael Nicholas 15 November 2013 (has links)
This investigation covered a general study of the effects of the partial loads on the twenty-eight day strength of concrete. Special emphasis was placed on those loads and times of loading that produced the greatest strengths. The work was done using one mix. However, the results for this mix will probably be characteristic of other mixes. all the work, including the making and testing of cylinders, tests for aggregates, slump tests, etc., was done according to the A. S. T. M. standards. It is quite natural that, while investigating one problem, many other interesting problems are thought of in relation to the work, There are some problems related to partial loads that might warrant future study and research, some of these being as follows: 1. A study of the effects of partial loads during the early curing period on concrete beams. 2. A study of the effects of partial loads during the early curing period on various mixes of concrete. 3. A study of conditions actually existing in structures. 4. A study of sections of concrete cylinders cut in various planes which would include concrete that had been partially loaded and concrete that had not been partially loaded. This might lead to a discovery of why the effects of partial loading are produced. / Master of Science

A study of neoplasms

Young, Tyler J. January 1938 (has links)
During the past several years thirteen cows have died in the dairy herd at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute of malignant tumors of the lymphoid type. In view of research with respect to cancers of various types in man, any information relating to tumors acquired in this study should be of value not only to animal industry but also to similar conditions in in man A problem such as this requires long study, probably several years. This paper is a preliminary report on early fundamental steps of the cancer problem in dairy cattle as applied to local conditions. Because spontaneous cases of neoplasms in dairy cattle do not occur with any regularity, other phases of cancer research were instituted for investigation during the interval between cases. From the results of the previously described experiments, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. There was no evidence whatever of the neoplasms occurring in the rats about the dairy bards. 2. The attempts to produce neoplasms in dairy cattle due to foreign bodies implanted in the rumen were unsuccessful. 3. Attempts to transplant some of the tumors occurring naturally in the dairy cattle were unsuccessful. 4. Attempts to produce neoplasms in dairy cattle by weekly injections of four per cent solution or tar and lard were unsuccessful. 5. Attempts to produce tumors in fowl by weekly injections of four per cent solution or tar and lard were successful in five of the nine birds. Attempts to transplant two of these tumors were unsuccessful. 6. Occurrence of tumors in the members or the two families indicates possible genetic relationship. / Master of Science
