A study of factors affecting electric soil sterilization

Stewart, Gustavus Hoffmeyer January 1938 (has links)
This investigation includes a study of factors affecting electric soil sterilization under actual greenhouse conditions where steam is available. The soil used for testing was taken from various greenhouse benches being infested with a number of common pathogens, including bacteria, nematodes, black root rot, and weed seeds. The data compiled from various tests includes records of both room and soil temperatures, watt-meter records of power demand, kilowatt hour records of power consumption, ammeter records of current, and summarized records of plant growth in various samples of standardized soil which received different treatments during sterilization. Comparative tests were run on both types of sterilization for determining the most economical, practical, and efficient method of sterilization. The portable resistance sterilizer was given a practical test by sterilizing soil in an electric hotbed located where steam was not available. / Master of Science

A preliminary distributional list of the mammals of Virginia

Patton, C. P. January 1938 (has links)
The objective of this study has been to list the mammals of Virginia and determine their intra-state distribution in so far as possible in the time allotted. Four procedures have been followed in conducting the study, namely, examination of available literature, collecting study material, examination of museum specimens and field observations. At the present time much effort is being exerted by research workers to establish a system of management for game animals which will aid in restoring these species to depleted areas in the State. The information on occurrence and distribution brought together by this study should be of aid to the game manager in working out more efficient practices, as all species of a fauna are interdependent. Not only will this knowledge be of considerable aid to the game manager in solving problems relative to valuable species and predatory species in a particular area, but it will also be of interest to the general public in that some forms affect agriculture practices. The mammiferous fauna of Virginia bear an important relation to mammals of other parts of the eastern United States, since several species occurring here are intermediate between northern and southern forms. / Master of Science

The debate on Austrian national identity in the First Republic (1918-1938)

Peniston-Bird, C. M. January 1997 (has links)
This thesis examines the debate over Austrian national identity in the interwar period (1918-1938), and deconstructs key components of national identity. These components include economic, historical, linguistic and certain cultural factors, the concept of a nation's mission, and the "national individual". The final area examined is tourism. It is postulated that tourism permits exploration of the bonds between humans and the environment which they inhabit, and has significant implications for national cohesion. Sources include contemporary and historical texts on the concept of nationhood and related areas; political, social and cultural histories pertaining to the First Republic; and primary source materials including parliamentary and cabinet minutes; the League of Nations' economic reports on Austria; newspapers, particularly those of pressure groups; individual monographs (of economists, teachers, politicians, theorists); as well as cultural output (literature, poetry, cinema, art, and satire). The two sides of the debate can be grouped into arguments pertaining to Austria's relationship to Germany, and arguments placing Austria into a wider European context. The roles of internal cohesion and the influence of the outside world on national identity are addressed. It is shown that the contribution of this period to the development of Austrian national identity has been underestimated: that the foundations for an independent Austria were laid in these years. The concept of national identity is explored and elucidated.

Karte des Bücherlandes

Zimmermann, Georg 24 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Heat : a short-story as inspiration for a design methodology

Tegtmeyer, Ute January 1998 (has links)
Architecture is the thoughtful making of spaces. Within the last decades of architectural history the role of the architect in society and therefore of architecture itself changed. Issues such as space and architectural language gain significance.Narrative architects such as Bernard Tschumi, Daniel Libeskind, and others are inspiration for a design-methodology which focuses on the development of an architectural language. The actual project will be the interpretation of the short-story Heat by Joyce Carol Oates. Its analysis serves as basis for the design of an architectural statement.Emphasis is put on the actual design-process rather than on the final design result. / Department of Architecture
