Joan Metelerkamp : poet of connection

Weyer, Christine Louise 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This thesis examines the academically neglected work of contemporary South African poet Joan Metelerkamp. It focuses specifically on the drive towards connection displayed in her poetry. The first chapter explores the embodied subjectivity Metelerkamp’s poetry employs, which insists upon connections between language and the body, the self and the natural world. The second chapter examines the connections between Metelerkamp’s poetry and her literary, mythological, academic, sociological and familial legacies which have shaped her work. The third chapter foregrounds the socio-historic location of her poetry, concentrating on the connection her poetry draws between the political and the personal. All the insights in this thesis are directly initiated by, and accountable to, the poetry. These insights are developed into integrated arguments through recourse to three different but compatible theoretical frameworks: embodiment theory, second wave Anglo-American feminism and contemporary South African literary theory. By exploring the revelatory connections drawn in her poetry, this thesis will argue that Metelerkamp is an important figure in the South African literary arena. Her poetry, sensual, subtly nuanced and ruthlessly honest, traverses uninhabited areas in South African literature and therefore deserves to receive the detailed critical attention which it has thus far been denied.

Broken vessels : the im-possibility of the art of remembrance and re-collection in the work of Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng

Belluigi, Dina Zoe January 2002 (has links)
This thesis is structured around investigating the philosophical and aesthetic problematics, politics, and possibilities of representing the past for the purposes of demythifying the present as well as commemorating the losses of history, as explored in the artworks of Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng. The first chapter begins with Theodor Adorno’s philosophical understanding of myth and history: how he is influenced by and then develops Karl Marx’s critique of society, Sigmund Freud’s critique of reason and its subject, and particularly Walter Benjamin’s ideas of history as catastrophe, the role of the historian and his messianic materialism. The second section looks at Theodor Adorno’s dialectic of art and society: immanent criticism in aesthetic practice, mimesis, and the shift in conceptions of allegory from Walter Benjamin’s understanding to that of Jacques Derrida. The last section of the chapter looks at Jacques Derrida’s poststructuralist theories against boundary-fixing, within that the ethical relation to the ‘other’ and the theorist/artist as psychic exile. The second chapter deals with the politics of remembrance and representation — beginning with Theodor Adorno’s historic interpretation of the Mosaic law against the making of images and Jean-Francois Lyotard on the im-possibility of representing the unrepresentable. The chapter is divided in two parts between the post-Holocaust European artists Anselm Kiefer and Christian Boltanski, and the post-apartheid South African artists William Kentridge and Santu Mofokeng. It explores, within these artists’ specific contexts, their formal and philosophical approaches to myth and history, and the problematics of image-making, representing the unrepresentable, and commemorating the immemorial. The thesis concludes by considering different conceptions of melancholia as they relate to these artists: the Freudian psychoanalytic approach, Benjamin’s notions of the artist-genius, and Julia Kristeva’s Lacanian reading of the humanist melancholic, concluding with the mythic-historical Kaballist notion of melancholia as the historical burden or responsibility to commemorate loss.

_________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research focuses on the investigation of the interlacement among the topics: post-modernity, capitalism, civilization, identity, schizophrenia and some examples of the contemporary literature production, mainly that which concerns the contemporary man as a result of the twentieth century. This literature is represented here by Extensão do domínio da luta (HOUELLEBECQ, 1994/2004), first novel of Michel Houellebecq, which is the analysis corpus of this research. The other Houellebecq’s novels: Partículas elementares (1998/1999), Plataforma (2001/2002) and A possibilidade de uma ilha (2005/2006) are explored as concept reinforcers because they work as extensive universes in which the ideas of Extensão do domínio da luta appear. Firstly, there is a discussion about our contemporary world. This discussion is supported by the theories of thinkers such as Jean-François Lyotard, Fredric Jameson, David Harvey and Linda Hutcheon. Then, supported by the ideas of Michel Foucault, Friedrich Nietzsche and Roland Barthes, there is a panorama of the artistic expression since the beginning of modern age up to our contemporary age. After that, supported by Eric Hobsbawn, we go deeper in this subject, reinforcing the evolution of the capitalist economical system and its relations to art and literature with the objective of understanding the links between the contemporary age and capitalism. Finally, supported by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as a counterpoint to Freud’s psychoanalysis, one of the capitalist lifestyle consequences is remarked: schizophrenia. That, with not very exciting effects but on the other hand a freedom giver, comes from the human’s attitude, imposed by the capitalist system, of denying its own complexity. In relation to literature, this work intends to place it among modernity and postmodernity making some possibilities of comprehension arise through the association of it with other categories of text, such as the critical essay.
