Van Aswegen, Berendien Susan 23 September 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Afrikaans) / In comparing these two novels the perceptual, psychological and ideological facets of focalization are discussed. Perceptual focalization comprises two main aspects namely the focalizer's spacial orientation as regards himself and the focalized object and secondly the focalizer's position regarding the past, present and future in the text. The psychological facet of focalization comprises the cognitive background and development of the narrator-focalizer as well as his emotional orientation towards the focalized. The life world and value system of the focalizer determines the ideological perspective against which the characters and events in the novel are evaluated...

The string quartets of Miguel Bernal Jimenez and Silvestre Revueltas: twentieth century Mexican composers

Pierce, Charlotte E., Pierce, Charlotte E. January 1981 (has links)
Mexico, a land of contrast and mystery, was the birthplace of the two composers included in this study. These two composers were chosen for several reasons: the two men represent the enigma of the country that influenced their development and each of them molded Mexico's popular musical heritage into a classical format. Miguel Bernal Jiménez was considered in 1941 as the most brilliant composer of Catholic Mexico; Silvestre Revueltas received the title of Mexico's greatest composer, yet today the composers are almost unknown in the United States. Arizona, and Tucson in particular, are situated so near to Mexico that it is important to become aware of that country's varied musical heritage in the classical idiom, as well as its other cultural and historical aspects. As a resident in Mexico for three years with a previously acquired interest in Latin American music, the writer became increasingly involved in study of the music. Her residence laid a foundation for research into these two composers. When the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México, one of Mexico's major symphony orchestras based in Toluca near Mexico City, made a nationwide tour of the United States in June 1975, Revueltas' orchestral composition Sensemayá received several performances. The Tucson Symphony also performed Sensemayá in 1979 with Dr. George Trautwein conducting. The writer found this work to be fascinating and she wondered if Revueltas had written works for cello; with research she found that he did not write for cello solo, but that he composed for string quartet. The writer first encountered the Cuarteto Virreinal by Miguel Bernal Jiménez when she performed the work from manuscript with a professional string quartet sponsored by Patrimonio Cultural in Toluca, Mexico. The work is a pleasant combination of classical and Mexican qualities; the writer decided that someday she would like to perform it for audiences in the United States.

Investigating the feminist significance of Lars von Trier's representation of women in his Golden Heart Trilogy (1996/1998/2000) and Antichrist (2009)

Evans, Melissa Albie January 2012 (has links)
Despite critics‟ negative appraisal of Lars Von Trier's Antichrist (2009) for its ostensible misogyny, a deep thematic resonance exists between its representation of women as historical victims of patriarchal discourse, and the positive representations of women as Christ-like figures found in his Golden Heart Trilogy (1996/1998/2000). Arguably, it is important to recognize this, because these films together comprise an exercise in cinematic resistance to the narratives of the „backlash‟ against women's rights, thematized by Susan Faludi in her Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women; resistance which is undermined when these films are considered disparate or incongruous.

"E a historia se fez cidade... " : a construção historica e historiografica de Brasilia

Ceballos, Viviane Gomes de, 1975- 25 February 2005 (has links)

In Brasilia¿s case, it is history that created the city¿. Essays about Brasilia try to establish a historicity to it that antecedes its construction. References to Dom Bosco¿s prophetic dream, discussions from José Bonifácio,José Hipólito, Antônio Velos, Varnhagen, established during the 19th century yet, reveal this elaboration and represent, in my opinion, the reasoning used by people who writes, or already wrote, about that city as a mean to justify or to support that construction. In this sense, my goal is to map this discussion related to the capital interiorization and identify how those references to it are fundamental at the elaboration of the speeches made in defense of Brasilia¿s construction. By analyzing these speeches in defense of a new capital and the strategies adopted to grant it its historical support, I try to understand how the reference to this discussion that antecedes the city¿s construction had reflected at the establishment of an imaginary around it: ¿benchmark of a new era¿, ¿dawn from a new Brazil¿, ¿capital of the national integration¿¿ - and also at the consolidation of Juscelino Kubitschek¿s image as a man who had made come true that dream dreamt for so long by the Brazilians. I work with the hypothesis that the emphasis given to this background had been the strategy used to break with the idea that Brasilia was result of the will from an ¿audacious¿ president and to bring back other personalities who had debated, thought and proposed the capital interiorization, whose concretization had been, therefore, ¿the product of reasoning and expectation¿ / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Orientador: Edgar Salvadori De Decca / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-03T15:33:50Z (GMT). Nesse contexto, a imagem de Lampião aparece fihrada dos aspectos negativos / Abstract: The writer look for understand the build processe in memory of the people of the cangaço. The applicability of the apportionment of Damages Act 34 of 1956 to contractual claims with emphasis on the development of apportionment laws in South Africa and similar foreign jurisdictions

Grimbeek, Mathew 25 July 2013 (has links)
This study will follow the development of the rules pertaining to apportionment of damages, with particular emphasis on the Apportionment of Damages Act 34 of 1956 (‘the Act”) and its applicability to contractual claims. It furthermore delves into the current legal position in England, Australia and New Zealand. In Thoroughbred Breeders Association v Price Waterhouse 1999 (4) SA 968 (W), the Court decided that the Act was applicable to contractual claims and apportioned the damages payable by the defendant to the plaintiff. However, the matter was taken on appeal with the decision of the Court a Quo overturned. It will be argued that, although the reasoning at first glance seems sound, upon closer examination, the application of the Act need not be limited solely to delictual claims. The best manner in which to remedy this lacunae in our law is an amendment to Section 1 (1) and 1(3) of the Act, to explicitly extend the application thereof to contractual claims. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Private Law / unrestricted

Teacher Strikes as Education: The West Virginia Teacher Strikes Framed by a Theory of Counter-Conduct, Performativity, and Aesthetics

Hardman, Sara Elizabeth January 2022 (has links)
The success of teacher strikes is often analyzed according to tangible outcomes, such as salary gains or the prevention of privatization bills. The point of this dissertation, however, is to argue that there are significant intangible outcomes as well. Using the West Virginia teacher strikes of 2018 and 2019 as a case study, I argue that the intangible outcomes of teacher strikes comprise a political-aesthetic education that expands the possibilities for how teachers can live within a neoliberal and patriarchal context. To do this, I develop a theoretical framework using three disparate yet nested concepts: counter-conduct, as used by Michel Foucault; performativity, as used by Judith Butler; and aesthetics, including everyday aesthetics, as used by Yuriko Saito, and somaesthetics, as used by Richard Shusterman. With this theoretical framework, I analyze the West Virginia teacher strikes as both political manifestations and aesthetic experiences. I collected data on the strikes through teachers’ written and spoken first-personal narratives, media interviews, academic books and articles, podcasts, videos, and images. Ultimately, I find that in their strikes, the West Virginia teachers performed counter-conduct against particular characteristics expected of them under neoliberalism and patriarchy. Even though not articulated or asserted, this counter-conduct could be aesthetically experienced through the sensuous and felt dimensions of the strikes. Teachers could feel, see, and hear the performance of alternative ways of being. This experience led to an expansion of possibilities for how teachers live as educators and as persons, even without dismantling the governmentalities of neoliberalism and patriarchy.

Factors Causing Non-Completion of Registration at Utah State Agricultural College During the School Year 1955-56

Barney, Richard J. 01 May 1956 (has links)
The prospective student who has been accepted and who fails to arrive on the college campus despite his apparent intentions presents a problem to secondary school principals as well as to college officials. Non-arrivals are common on the admissions records of every college or university. (14) Alden B. Threasher reports admissions attrition percentages ranged from 3 percent to 55 percent with averages of 27 percent to 46 percent in a study of 58 institutions grouped by type.
