Milazzo, Elaine January 2004 (has links)

Simulation of multistage detector for spread-spectrum applications

Bais, Viraj Kumar 23 December 2009 (has links)
The conventional single-user correlation receiver is not optimized for use with a multiple-access channel shared by users transmitting asynchronously independent data streams by modulating a set of assigned signal waveforms with low mutual cross-correlations. Furthermore, the performance is severely degraded as the number of users in a radio-network with fixed bandwidth grows or as the relative powers of the interfering signals become large, as in the "near-far" problem. The optimum multiuser detector based on a dynamic programming algorithm has substantially better performance, but has a variable decoding delay and is computationally intensive due to the NP-hardness of the problem of computing the most likely sequence of symbols from the sufficient statistics and signal cross-correlations. Interest has grown in suboptimal demodulation schemes which exhibit a low order of complexity to ensure their practical implementation, but not exhibiting the impairment of the conventional single-user detector. The multistage detection strategy for coherent demodulation in asynchronous code-division multiple-access systems is such a suboptimal detection scheme based on successive estimation and removal of the multiple-access interference, and requires a computational complexity per symbol which is linear in the number of users, in contrast to the exponential complexity of the optimum demodulator. This project presents simulation results for the performance of a multistage detector for varying number of interfering users, and different combinations of desired user versus interfering users' signal energies. It is shown that the performance approaches that of communIcations as the interfering signals become stronger. The near-far problem is therefore alleviated. Results also indicate that one stage in the receiver is required to reject interference from users at each of the various power levels. This receiver could be modified for use in practical CDMA systems by designing a multistage receiver which forms successive estimates of the channel state in addition to the interference. / Master of Science

Feasibility study to build a de-inking plant in northern Virginia

Lowe, Douglas Edwin 17 March 2010 (has links)

The systems engineering process has been applied to determine the feasibility of building a de-inking plant in Northern Virginia. This plant will recycle old newspapers and magazines into newsprint to be used by a local newspaper company in the production of their daily newspaper.

A needs analysis establishes the local newspaper company's desire to obtain a reliable source of one-hundred percent recycled newsprint at a competitive cost. The analysis proposes building a de-inking plant to produce the required quantity and quality of recycled newsprint required to fulfill the local newspaper company's production needs. The analysis applies the engineering process to develop the system's high-level operational and maintenance requirements. This process establishes a system configuration used to evaluate the system's economic feasibility.

The results of this analysis indicate that the de-inking plant system is feasible within the available technology and economic resources. The de-inking plant can provide a reliable source of 100% recycled paper at a cost that is below the present cost for similar recycled newsprint.
/ Master of Science

Evaluation of a regulatory system designed to control industrial air emissions and an analysis of an air dispersion model case study

Henson, Eric Luis 19 September 2009 (has links)
A system designed to control industrial emissions while protecting the environment has evolved from the Clean Air Act Amendments. The system's primary components are the pollution sources, government, economy, environment, and public influence. The functional relationship between all of the system's components manifests itself in the form of requirements for pollution permits. The pollution permits limit the environmental impact of the pollution sources while in general do not impose undue economic burdens on the sources. The environmental impact is determined by analyzing the source's pollution concentration distributions against the systems functional criteria which establish threshold limits for pollution concentrations. A computer model, a detail design component of the system, predicts ambient air concentration distributions around a proposed facility based on Gaussian Dispersion principles.
A case study of four sources in Giles County, Virginia served to illustrate the functional relationships of the system's components. A computer program, the Integrated Gaussian Model (IGM), predicted ambient air concentrations of pollutants resulting from the emissions by the four sources in the case study. The model application provided an opportunity to evaluate actual data produced by one of the system's primary detailed design components. Analysis of the results indicated that at least two of the Giles County sources in the region exceed the limits imposed by the system's criteria and thus have adverse impact on the environment. / Master of Science
