Scalable time series similarity search for data analytics

Schäfer, Patrick 26 October 2015 (has links)
A time series is a collection of values sequentially recorded from sensors or live observations over time. Sensors for recording time series have become cheap and omnipresent. While data volumes explode, research in the field of time series data analytics has focused on the availability of (a) pre-processed and (b) moderately sized time series datasets in the last decades. The analysis of real world datasets raises two major problems: Firstly, state-of-the-art similarity models require the time series to be pre-processed. Pre-processing aims at extracting approximately aligned characteristic subsequences and reducing noise. It is typically performed by a domain expert, may be more time consuming than the data mining part itself, and simply does not scale to large data volumes. Secondly, time series research has been driven by accuracy metrics and not by reasonable execution times for large data volumes. This results in quadratic to biquadratic computational complexities of state-of-the-art similarity models. This dissertation addresses both issues by introducing a symbolic time series representation and three different similarity models. These contribute to state of the art by being pre-processing-free, noise-robust, and scalable. Our experimental evaluation on 91 real-world and benchmark datasets shows that our methods provide higher accuracy for most datasets when compared to 15 state-of-the-art similarity models. Meanwhile they are up to three orders of magnitude faster, require less pre-processing for noise or alignment, or scale to large data volumes.

Querying a Web of Linked Data

Hartig, Olaf 28 July 2014 (has links)
During recent years a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the World Wide Web (WWW) has emerged. These best practices are referred to as the Linked Data principles and the resulting form of Web data is called Linked Data. The increasing adoption of these principles has lead to the creation of a globally distributed space of Linked Data that covers various domains such as government, libraries, life sciences, and media. Approaches that conceive this data space as a huge distributed database and enable an execution of declarative queries over this database hold an enormous potential; they allow users to benefit from a virtually unbounded set of up-to-date data. As a consequence, several research groups have started to study such approaches. However, the main focus of existing work is to address practical challenges that arise in this context. Research on the foundations of such approaches is largely missing. This dissertation closes this gap.

Simulation Of Conjugate Heat Transfer Problems Using Least Squares Finite Element Method

Goktolga, Mustafa Ugur 01 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis study, a least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) based conjugate heat transfer solver was developed. In the mentioned solver, fluid flow and heat transfer computations were performed separately. This means that the calculated velocity values in the flow calculation part were exported to the heat transfer part to be used in the convective part of the energy equation. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were used in the flow simulations. In conjugate heat transfer computations, it is required to calculate the heat transfer in both flow field and solid region. In this study, conjugate behavior was accomplished in a fully coupled manner, i.e., energy equation for fluid and solid regions was solved simultaneously and no boundary conditions were defined on the fluid-solid interface. To assure that the developed solver works properly, lid driven cavity flow, backward facing step flow and thermally driven cavity flow problems were simulated in three dimensions and the findings compared well with the available data from the literature. Couette flow and thermally driven cavity flow with conjugate heat transfer in two dimensions were modeled to further validate the solver. Finally, a microchannel conjugate heat transfer problem was simulated. In the flow solution part of the microchannel problem, conservation of mass was not achieved. This problem was expected since the LSFEM has problems related to mass conservation especially in high aspect ratio channels. In order to overcome the mentioned problem, weight of continuity equation was increased by multiplying it with a constant. Weighting worked for the microchannel problem and the mass conservation issue was resolved. Obtained results for microchannel heat transfer problem were in good agreement in general with the previous experimental and numerical works. In the first computations with the solver / quadrilateral and triangular elements for two dimensional problems, hexagonal and tetrahedron elements for three dimensional problems were tried. However, since only the quadrilateral and hexagonal elements gave satisfactory results, they were used in all the above mentioned simulations.

Delphin 6 Output File Specification

Vogelsang, Stefan, Nicolai, Andreas 29 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This paper describes the file formats of the output data and geometry files generated by the Delphin program, a simulation model for hygrothermal transport in porous media. The output data format is suitable for any kind of simulation output generated by transient transport simulation models. Implementing support for the Delphin output format enables use of the advanced post-processing functionality provided by the Delphin post- processing tool and its dedicated physical analysis functionality. The article also discusses the application programming interface of the DataIO library that can be used to read/write Delphin output data and geometry files conveniently and efficiently.

Datenqualität in Sensordatenströmen / Data Quality in Sensor Data Streams

Klein, Anja 23 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Hydatius : a late Roman chronicler in post-Roman Spain : an historiographical study and new critical edition of the chronicle

Burgess, Richard W. January 1989 (has links)
Late Roman chronicles are little studied and greatly misunderstood. The purpose of this dissertation is to treat a Late Roman chronicler, Hydatius, as a living, breathing person and to use the chronicle as a means of revealing this individual: his beliefs, his interests, his fears, his attitudes, his view of the Empire, and his abilities as an historian. Hydatius was a bishop in Gallaecia, writing in 468-9 amidst the Suevic depredations of Spain. As a result he is a unique source in that he is the earliest extant historian who wrote in a post- Roman (i.e. Mediaeval) world. His chronicle is the only detailed source for Spanish history in the fifth century and the only detailed source written about the fifth-century barbarian invasions and settlements. Though extremely isolated he had remarkable contacts with the outside world and his chronicle is a unique source for much non- Spanish information. It is also one of the most personal of all the Late Antique chronicles and therefore an excellent gateway for an examination of the Late Roman world as seen through the eyes of a contemporary. For these reasons, Hydatius' vivid and often emotive account of the sufferings of Gallaecia at the hands of the Sueves and Goths, framed by the parallel military, religious and imperial history of the Eastern and Western empires and set within the eschatological context of the imminent Apocalypse, deserves detailed study. The production of a new critical edition, based on only the third, complete, first-hand examination of the sole major manuscript (B) since 1615 and the first produced from all known manuscript evidence, complete with apparatuses on the manuscripts, chronology and orthography, was necessitated by the perverse Sources chrétiennes edition of 1974 and the discovery of new evidence from a careful study of manuscript B.

L'apport de Nicolas Cabasilas à l'ecclésiologie à partir de la théologie des mystères / The contribution of Nicolas Cabasilas in the ecclesiology based on his sacramental theology

Maroudas, Fotios 27 September 2012 (has links)
The two major spiritual works of Nicholas Cabasilas : The Explanation of the Divine Liturgy and his seven speeches on the life of Christ, whose basic theological and ecclesiastical designs are the fertile soil of our thesis on the mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation and Holy Eucharist, are based on the main idea that human salvation should be found in the church, the house of God. Nicholas Cabasilas bases precisely on the holy mysteries his entire theology of the New Testament, in which the whole world is organized and lives as the Body of Christ. The Holy Spirit by the hand and the mouth of the priest performs the mysteries of the Church and provides the spiritual and moral fruits, the spiritual life in Christ. Thus the life of the members of the body of the Church, of which Christ is the head, is the life in the Holy Spirit. Cabasilas places with reason the major sacraments (Baptism, Chrismation and Eucharist) at the heart of this life and union with Christ. However, the important reminder of Cabasilas on the principle of cooperation should not escape us. Indeed, the new life in Christ is the fruit of cooperation between God and the human factor. The salvation is not given by force with the mysteries, but with the cooperation and good will of the individual, his active participation. Finally, as our case demonstrates, the theological thought of Cabasilas concerning the eschatological character of the mysteries, especially baptism and the Holy Eucharist, preserves and provides the doctrine of the Apostle Paul and the early Christian theology qualifying the holly mysteries as "forces of the age to come."
