The present research composes the Research Project "Hierarchical model of the antecedent of the persistence behavior of students in higher courses in the distance modality", together with the dissertation "Personality traits and student persistence in undergraduate courses in distance modality", defended in the PPGGP / UFES. It belongs to the area of concentration in Operations Management in the Public Sector, for seeking to understand the phenomenon of student persistence in EAD courses of the UFES and propose measures that enable to reduce evasion in these courses. This is a quantitative research with the purpose of investigating the personality traits that explain the persistence of undergraduate courses in Biological Sciences, Physics, Pedagogy and Chemistry, offered in the distance modality - EAD by UFES, using the Model Motive of Motivation and Personality - 3M, de Mowen (2000). A bibliographical research was carried out on this model and the theories of student evasion and persistence. The data collection was done by field survey, with a structured questionnaire, reaching 169 valid answers. Data were analyzed by multiple linear regressions in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS, confirming 14 of the 32 delimited hypotheses. The results confirm the possibility of using the 3M model to understand "Persistence", proving that personality traits influence hierarchically, from the most abstract to the most superficial, namely: Conscientiousness, Introversion and Need for Excitement (elementary), Task and Self-efficacy Guidance (composite) and (Situational) Satisfaction on the behavior of Student (Surface) Persistence. Finally, Appendix D proposes a manual for guidance in interpreting the confirmed hypotheses for student persistence in courses offered in the EAD modality by the UFES, in which the 14 confirmed hypotheses after the application of the structured questionnaire are analyzed individually. Three essays on financial self-efficacy beliefs and the saving behavior of older pre-retirees

Asebedo, Sarah D. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / School of Family Studies and Human Services / Kristy L. Pederson-Archuleta / Martin Seay / This dissertation employed a psychological framework to investigate the saving behavior of older pre-retirees through three essays using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Understanding the connection between psychological characteristics and saving behavior is critical as this population attempts to bridge the retirement saving gap. Of these characteristics, financial self-efficacy beliefs (FSE) are theoretically vital to saving behavior. With the FSE beliefs of older adults weak and vulnerable to decline, more research is needed to understand how FSE beliefs affect saving behavior and how FSE beliefs can be supported. Essay one investigated the psychological characteristics associated with FSE beliefs according to the Meta-Theoretic Model of Motivation and Personality (3M). Using a sample of 2,070 pre-retirees aged 50 to 70, essay one revealed that FSE beliefs can be supported through the frequent experience of positive affect, reduced negative affect, a stronger perception of mastery, and a higher task orientation, holding all else constant. Essay two investigated the relationship between FSE beliefs and saving behavior (i.e., change in net worth from 2008 to 2012) through the Social Cognitive Theory of Self-Regulation. Using a sample of 844 pre-retirees aged 50 to 70, results revealed that FSE beliefs are significantly and positively related to saving behavior, after controlling for the financial ability and motivation to save. Essay three employed a structural equation model to investigate an integrated psychological approach to saving behavior based upon the 3M. Using a sample of 1,370 pre-retired and partially retired adults aged 50 to 70, essay three revealed that FSE beliefs facilitated the connection between elemental traits (i.e., openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism), compound traits (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, mastery, and task orientation), and saving behavior. Overall, significant evidence was generated supporting a psychological approach to the saving behavior of older pre-retirees. Financial and mental health professionals can utilize this framework to provide holistic retirement saving advice that acknowledges the psychological roots of behavior. Moreover, results established empirical support for the role FSE beliefs play in executing saving behavior. Lastly, results supported the importance of domain specific measurement for self-efficacy beliefs in future research.

探討影響流通履歷食品購買意願之人格特質—運用3M階層模式 / The influence of personality on purchase intention of the food with traceability system —an application of 3M model

Unknown Date (has links)

Unknown Date (has links)
Taiwan corporations have always been at a disadvantage behind foreign companies when it comes to the protection of intellectual property rights. The media repeats the stereotype that most cases of patent infringements between foreign companies and Taiwan corporations end up with costly settlements from Taiwan corporations. Moreover, patent violations are widely regarded as problems exclusive to the high-tech industry and have nothing to do with traditional industries. The Kinik Company, one of the traditional industries, surprisingly prevailed in a patent litigation dispute with the world renown, 3M Corporation. Not only did the Kinik Company successfully claim a settlement fee from its opponent, but also that it garnered commercial benefits and recognition for challenging a foreign company on equal grounds. This research begins with the patent quality and the position of an industry in the industry value chain. This thesis will involve with domestic and international theories, secondary data, published studies and case interviews, analyzing what strategy the Kinik Company adopted in its patent litigation suit against the world renowned 3M Corporation. The study will provide useful reference for Taiwan corporations of similar situations. The major findings are as follows: 1. The higher quality of the patents an industry possesses, the more leverage the industry will possess in a patent litigation. However, a good Claim Interpretation can supplement patent quality inadequacies and gain grounds during patent litigation, thereby winning a favorable judgment. 2. The industry’s positions in the value chain closely correspomd to its inclination to proceed with the patent litigation. The higher position it is situated in the industry value chain, the greater the downstream corporations depend on its survival and the more support it will garner to proceed with patent litigation. 3. A corporation’s ultimate goal is to maximize profits, and so a corporation weighs more on commercial profits than social justice. When the cost of litigation falls below expected benefits, the corporation will pursue litigation. On the other hand, when the costs of litigation exceed expected benefits, corporations will forgo litigation. 4. Since the ultimate goal of a patent litigation is to fight for bargaining chips, the defendant must react immediately (putting forth counter claims, forming a strategic alliance, immediately switching production techniques, invalidating the opponent’s patent etc.) when being sued for patent violations, even if it believed that there was no violation at all. Never wait for judgments to react. 5. Choosing a favorable location and approach for a patent litigation will increase the odds as well as bargaining chips over commercial benefits. 6. A favorable judgment from a patent litigation improves an industry’s market share, share price and other financial indicators, especially for smaller companies. This research offers the following suggestions for the industries: 1. When small and medium enterprises are involved in patent litigations initiated by multinational corporations, they must make certain whether they did the violation in the first place, and whether they possess any patent that can be used for a counter claim. 2. Always choose professional and experienced lawyers and expert witnesses for patent litigations. Do not risk losing big over cost considerations. 3. Small and medium enterprises should also develop problem-solving skills for their customers. The only way to fight against a multinational patent litigation is to become indispensable within the industry value chain and to be backed by a powerful alliance. 4. React immediately to any patent litigation: to make settlements, to proceed with a counter claim, to invalidate the opponents’ patent, to switch production techniques, or form commercial alliances. Never wait for judgments. 5. Evaluate all patent litigations based on costs and benefits. Once the expected benefits become less than the costs of litigation, the decision makers must ponder whether to pursue litigation or not.

Adhesives for Load-Bearing Timber-Glass Elements : Elastic, plastic and time dependent properties

Phung, Kent, Chu, Charles January 2013 (has links)
This thesis work is part of an on-going project regarding load-bearing timber glass composites within the EU program WoodWisdom-Net. One major scope of that project is the adhesive material between the glass and timber parts. The underlying importance of the bonding material is related to the transfer of stress between the two materials – the influence of the adhesive stiffness and ductility on the possibility of obtaining uniform stress distributions. In this study the mechanical properties of two different adhesives are investigated, an epoxy (3M DP490) and an acrylate (SikaFast 5215). The differences of the adhesives lay in dissimilar stiffness, strength and viscous behaviour. In long term load caring design is important to understand the materials behavior under a constant load and a permanent displacement within the structure can cause major consequences. Therefore the main aim in this project is to identify the adhesives strength, deformation capacity and possible viscous (time dependent) effects. Because of the limitation of equipment and time this study is restricted to only three different experiments. Three different types of tensile tests have been conducted: monotonic, cyclic relaxation tests. The results of the experiments show that 3M DP490 has a higher strength and a smaller deformation capacity as compared to the SikaFast 5215. Thus, the SikaFast 5215 is more ductile. The 3M DP490 exhibits a lower loss of strength under constant strain (at relaxation). SikaFast 5215 showed also a large dependency of strain level on the stress loss in relaxation.

Architektura 3M značek a práce s nimi, case study 3M – z pohledu B2B, interních specialistů a marketérů / Architecture 3M of brands and their applications, “Case study 3M” – the perspective of B2B subjects and internal specialists and marketing personnel of 3M

Vojta, Jan January 2017 (has links)
Brand portfolios of multinational firm are a complex organism which is managed by headquarter of organization, in particular by the brands architecture and rebranding. The distributors create a direct feedback relationship from the market and they significantly influence any success of brands. The specific work of marketing personnel with brands is thus influenced by many stakeholders on the market and, in consequence, the specific work becomes a complex marketing activity. This master thesis is concerned with the architecture of the specific portfolio of 3M and the work with its brands. The aim is (i) to map architecture of the specific portfolio of 3M House of Brands and (ii) to assess rebranding form 2015 and (iii) to analyze the work with 3M brands and to formulate recommendation for improvements of the work with 3M. The first part is considers the architecture of brands from a theoretical viewpoint which provides a basis for the mapping of 3M House of Brands. There is also specified marketing research methodology which is applied in the practical part of the thesis concerned with specific secondary data, questionnaire survey and deep interviews. In the practical part of the master thesis there is analyzed 3M Case Study, in which there is described and assessed the empirical research of 3M brands. The research consists of two parts: (1) questionnaire survey orientated on B2B distributors, and (2) deep interviews carried out with 3M marketing and special personnel. The comparison and synthesis of more qualitative data appears that the most important result. The 3M perspectives of the marketing personnel and the distributors on the selection of brand activities differ in spite the fact that their aims are similar. The key recommendation of this thesis is, therefore, to give more importance to preferences of the market and create upon this empirical basis more effective branding activities.

Effects of Tackification Agents on Room Temperature Epoxy Mechanical Properties

Murray, Garen B. 14 June 2022 (has links)
When laying up dry composite materials and aligning the fibers in the appropriate directions it can be a challenge due to the dryness of the fiber and mold design. Several commercial products are available to help fix plies to molds keeping the proper fiber orientation depending upon mold geometry. Prepreg and wet layups do not have this problem due to the inherent inclusion of a matrix in their manufacturing, dry materials have no added epoxy at the time of layup and are therefore in need of assistance maintain position. The purpose of this research is to determine if Super 77™ or EPON™ 2002 increases or decreases mechanical properties of the neat resin and composite laminates; if the increase or decrease is dependent upon the type of epoxy, and if the amount of applied tackifier can be optimized towards a high or low application quantity to minimize any detrimental effects to mechanical properties. Each tackification agent was applied in high and low concentrations to eight composite panels, with two control panels. The EPON™ was applied manually and set with heat exposure while the Super 77™ was sprayed from an aerosol can. The Super 77™ plies were stacked and pressed by hand while the EPON™ plies were stacked and ironed together to create panels, which were then infused with one of two room temperature infusion epoxies, MVS 610 or INF 114. The panels were then cut to specimen size for testing. Neat resin specimens were cast in silicone molds with high and low concentrations of tackifiers and allowed to cure for 12 hours at room temp, then heated to 60° C for 8 Both Super 77™ and EPON™ 2002 reduced the SBS for both epoxies, but Super 77™ reduced the short beam shear more than EPON™ 2002. The modulus of the neat resin cast specimens with high concentration were between 0 to 20% lower than neat resin with no tackifier; the tensile strength was increased for those specimens with Super 77™ and lower for those with EPON™ 2002. Similarly, the Charpy test resulted in higher values for Super 77™ than for EPON™ 2002. The effects of Super 77™ and EPON™ 2002 are complex and varied depending on application concentration, resin, and tackifier type; but the addition of any tackifier reduces mechanical properties from non-tackified laminates.

An Investigation into the Use of Density Functional Theory (DFT) Calculations for Predicting Vibrational Transitions for Perfluroinated Sulfonic Acid (PFSA) Ionomer Membranes

Schultz, Spencer Albert 05 February 2019 (has links)
Perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes demonstrate great potential for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their favorable electronic properties and excellent efficiency. However, the assignment of key vibrational transitions such as the symmetric sulfonate and ether stretches is not yet fully understood depriving researchers of a quick and simple technique for analyzing morphological changes. The symmetric sulfonate stretch could be used to track changes in the ionic clusters formed within the membrane while the ether stretch will provide insight into the largely semi-crystalline PTFE phase. Alterations in either regime will affect both ion transport and mechanical properties and produce a major shift in device performance. This study focused on predicting the vibrational transitions for Aquivion, 3M PFSA, and Nafion using density functional theory (DFT) with the bulk being performed using the same functional and basis set combination, B3LPY/6-31+G*. For all three ionomers, the predicted vibrational transitions were affected by changes in both the conformer and solvation method with water being used as the solvent. Despite the noted changes, both vibrational transitions were determined to be within the range of 970-1100 cm-1 with the symmetric sulfonate stretch present at around 970-1010 cm-1 and the ether stretch observed at around 1050-1100 cm-1 with solvation present. While the calculated peak positions mirror those found in the experimental spectra within the literature, the traditional normal mode assignments do not match those predicted by our calculations. However, recent studies have hypothesized that these vibrational transitions are coupled, which could explain why they have been so difficult to assign. / Master of Science / Perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes show great promise for use in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their excellent efficiency. However, the current techniques used to determine changes in structural configurations require sophisticated equipment and trained personnel to operate. Simpler techniques exist wherein the vibrations of certain bonds can be measured upon exposure of the sample to measured amounts of infrared light. The problem with this technique is that researchers currently do not fully understand at what wavelengths certain portions of the polymer known as functional groups will vibrate. These vibrations are also known as vibrational transitions. This study was undertaken to predict through numerical solutions to the Schrödinger equation at what wavelengths two particular vibrational transitions would occur for three common ionomers, Aquivion, 3M PFSA, and Nafion. For all three structures, the positions of these transitions mirrored that observed within the literature although the functional groups assigned to these positions did not match with those identified by our calculations. However, recent studies have indicated that these vibrational transitions occur at the same positions, which could explain why they have been so difficult to assign.
