A comparative study of some English translations of parts of three Mu'allaqat

Berdom, Abduladim January 2007 (has links)
This thesis deals with the question of how and why Jiihiliyya Poetry (JP) is translated into English, despite the huge differences between the two linguistic systems. The assumption underlying the answer to this complex question is that this phenomenon is cOImected with trends in the TL culture and literature. The study thus investigates the translations themselves, developing a viable, target-oriented, corpus-based methodology for the systematic study of the nature of the translated poetic text. Translation strategy, technique. equivalent response, accuracy, transparency, practicality and comprehensiveness are discussed along with the implications for translation studies. The thesis consists of nine chapters, each with a strong theoretical and functional basis. The opening chapters review modem theoretical perspectives concerning translation. Conclusions drawn by literary translators bring to the forefront what the various strategies hope to accomplish. Other works in the field of translation are also employed In developing a framework for the assessment of the selected verse translations. Chapter 1 introduces the main arguments and the structure of the thesis. Chapter 2 then concentrates on current approaches to translation, while chapter 3 discusses problems of meaning and methodology in translation in terms of the function of a text and its language. Chapter 4 presents a concise survey of the major theories of translation, and chapter 5 introduces modem views concerning the difficulties of translating poetic texts. Chapter 6 presents a concise survey of lP and its characteristics and themes. Chapter 7 presents a concise overview of the English translations of early Arabic Jiihiliyya odes that were chosen for discussion. Then, forming the main body of the study, a comparative analysis of the sample of English translations brings to light in chapter 8 the most common strategies preferred by some western translators of lP. Finally, chapter 9 summarizes the key findings of the study, assesses the translation strategies used, and suggests directions for further research.

The Pre-Islamic Qasida: Mu'allaqat, Sa'alik and the Rihla (The Missing Link) and other Influences on Hamadhani's Maqama

Gammash, Marwan January 2008 (has links)
This thesis argues that Hamadhani's maqamas have been influenced by the poetry of the pre-Islamic era, in particular the rihla (journey) in the mu'allaqat (hung poems) and su'luk (brigand) poems. The literature of the maqama genre is well established, yet no single study has attested that a link between Hamadhani's maqamas and pre-Islamic poetry exists or substantiated that Hamadhani was conscious of the interconnections of the narrative within the qaslda construct.

Les facteurs de cohésion textuelle dans la poésie d’Al-Bayyātī / Textual cohesion factors in the poetry of Al-Bayyātī

Ameen, Fadhil Hamasaeed 20 October 2018 (has links)
Cohesion is an essential notion within textual linguistics as cohesion has alwaysbeen at the heart of the research studies that focus on textual analysis, because cohesion places a great impact not just on the different components of a text but on the entire text as a complete and overlapping system. Thus, this study aims to highlight the textual cohesion and its impact on the organisation of sentences and paragraphs within the textual system. The study also deals with the factors and mechanisms that are linked to the parts of the text at the grammatical, lexical and pragmatic levels which together allow the writer to express a thorough and explicit meaning and to consequently form a text that enjoys and contains all the textual characteristics. The study shows that despite the uniqueness that characterizes the linguistics of the text that Western linguists consider as a separate branch, the roots of this have been present within the Arabic linguistic heritage, but have been dealt with as distinct parts, especially within areas such as grammar and rhetoric. The present work has chosen the poetry of ʿAbd Al-Wahhāb Al-Bayyātī as the subject of this study. Together with his contemporaries, this pioneer poet has contributed to the revival of modern Arabic poetry towards the end of the first half of the twentieth century he presented bountiful poetic productions with an innovative style that suit the ongoing developments of his time. The study focuses on the presence of textual concepts in Al-Bayyātī’s poems, and his ability to use and exploit these notions on the one hand and to achieve the element of textuality in his poems on the other hand. This reveals his deep, rich, profound and diverse poetic experience that merged heritage and modernity.

Discours, intertextualite et altérité dans "Pourquoi as-tu laissé le cheval à sa solitude ?" de Mahmoud Darwich / Discourse, intertextuality and otherness in "Why did you leave the horse alone" of Mahmoud Darwich

Amayra, Mahmoud 03 July 2019 (has links)
This study focuses on the analysis of identity discourse of Darwich’s collection : Why did you leave the horse alone? in order to know the nature of relationship that the me of Darwich maintains with the me of the Other. In other words, our collection looks like a “dialogue” where the me of Darwich and the me of the Other plunge into an argumentative discourse. To answer our question about the relationship between the two parts of dialogue, we have firstly chosen a theoretical approach: the presentation of the emblematic figure of Darwich perceived as one, having a personal, cultural, social and national identity, different from the identity of the other one. Secondly, through a practical point of view, the type of relationship between the two sides has been shown through the analysis of the corpus consisting of six groups.
