Water in Yeoville : considering fantasy and fragment in responsive urban placemaking

Roux, Marzanne January 2016 (has links)
Johannesburg's urban fabric is characterised by fragmentation. The natural landscape beyond and its remnants in the city are absorbed in a diffuse urban landscape. In the development of the public park in Yeoville, it is evident that an escalation in the population exacerbates urban expansion characterised by fragmentation and dissolution of the urban form. The scheme proposes the use water for leisure as a means to establish a relationship between the city's users and the natural environment. In the pursuit of responsive urban place making control is taken over the effect of fragmentation on urban development in the park and the fantastical nature as well as the use of water is considered in public urban spaces where it has largely been absent. An existing pool is the catalyst for the programme of swimming and recreation where unbounded fantasy transcends the user from the physical boundaries of the pools of water to become one with the natural environment. The proliferation of existing types of fragments fi nds expression in a series of courtyards that are spatial types of enclosure that offer retreat and seclusion from the context to meet the demands of the overburdened public space. The use and inherent nature of water informed the form and concept of water collection, storage, treatment and use for swimming and cleansing and is central to the narrative of navigation of the courts and pools. The value of the architecture as a contextual response lies in the exploration of the manifold relationships between the city user, urban fabric and the natural environment and urban as well as human scale at which the haptic experience unfolds. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

Portrait of a city : a narrative of discovery, creation and reflection

Swanepoel, Jade Lansley January 2016 (has links)
This study forms part of the discourse that critiques the current state of colonial museums in a post-colonial, post-apartheid city. The project focuses on a proposed urban vision for the precinct of Joubert Park in Johannesburg and responds to themes of memory, identity, reflection, art and public space. In the process, strategies are investigated to enhance identity in the area using the Johannesburg Art Gallery as a starting point. The gallery is integrated into the public realm, making it more accessible and transparent to its context by introducing pavilions and art installations to the park. These pavilions perform a variety of functions with the main design taking the form of a photographic urban archive. The pavilion archives the city and the people of the park by harnessing one of the current skill sets of the park photographers who are present on site. The project takes the form of a working camera using the principals of pinhole and wet plate photography to tangibly capture and display the happenings and changes of the site and the people who frequent it, over time. Once the pavilion has archived the desired changes in the city it will be dismantled and relocated to a new site to begin its life cycle once more. The movability of the structure acts as a critique on the static nature of buildings situated in cities that are always in flux. By introducing an architecture that allows and facilitates public activity while using people as the subjects for the creation of art by documenting a changing city, the scheme hopes to enhance the public realm by encouraging a collective identity to form. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

Aspects of the biology, population ecology and behaviour of the sable antelope, Hippotragus niger niger, (Harris, 1838) in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia

Grobler, Johannes Hendrik 10 May 2013 (has links)
The study set out to determine some of the bioecological relationships of the sable antelope Hippotragus niger niger (Harris, 1838) in the Rhodes Matopos National Park, Rhodesia. The vegetation of the area is divided into seven categories each of which is discussed. The population in the study area (approximately 200) had three major components as follows: the breeding groups, the bachelor male groups and territorial males. The structure of the breeding groups varied seasonally. Bachelor male groups of two to 12 consisted of younger males which had as yet not established territories. Territorial males fell into three classes depending on status:- class I: central territorial; class II: peripheral territorial and class III: outer territorial males, in relation to the breeding group home ranges. The population had a recruitment rate of 26 - 29 per cent fron young of the year and a calving percentage of 56 - 67 per cent, calculated towards the end of the year for 1971 and 1972. The male to fenale sex ratio was not significantly different from a l:l ratio for calves and yearlings but in adults the females outnumbered the males significantly. Breeding groups were found to have home ranges ranging in area from 240 ha to 280 ha though this did not apply in the strictest sense. The territories of territorial males were marked by branch breaking on shrubs and were equivalent to home ranges. The territories ranging from 25 ha to 40 ha in size were defended against other territorial males though bachelor males were tolerated. Social organisation of the ropulation wns based on intraspecific aggressiveness and intolerance and the dominance of one individual over another. Various dominance displays are discussed. Although difficult to determine exactly, the gestation period was about 270 days, the peak calving period being early February. The peak rut took place during May and June although fenales were mated at other times during the year. Measurements and mass are given for 47 young calves which were captured, marked and released for field studies. The sable were found to be selective grazers of nediun height grass showing preference for new growth. Sable appeared to be water dependent, drinking mostly from l3h00 to l4h00. Twenty-eight plant species were recorded as food plants, four of which were dicotyledonous. Seasonal use of different habitats was recorded. Mortality factors in the study area included predation, accidental deaths and illegal hunting, with possible mortality from parasite infestation and fighting. Management of the species involves management of the sable population itself and managenent of the habitat in which they live. Management inplications are discussed. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 1973. / Zoology and Entomology / unrestricted

Beirut Waterfront Park / Beirut Stadspark

Svensson, Staffan January 2014 (has links)
Beirut Down Town is growing and a whole region is facing a transformation. On the N empty landfill next to the Marina I propose an urban park that can reflect Beirut's pulse and life. It is an urban structure in different levels that hovers over the city and overlooking the Mediterranean sea . The Park connects to the already existing seaside promenade a 6 km programmed walk full of activities, the Waterfront Park is designed to reflect the daily life on this seaside walk and meet the ambition of Vibrant City center.

Opera i Stockholm, galärvarvet

Jarlhäll, Emma January 2011 (has links)

Occurrence of blood-borne tick-transmitted parasites in tsessebe (Damaliscus lunatus lunatus) antelope in Vaalbos National Park, Northern Cape Province

Brothers, P.S. (Peter Stanley) 13 July 2009 (has links)
Blood was collected from 71 tsessebe antelope and ticks from 12 of these animals, in the Vaalbos National Park. The samples were collected when the animals were relocated to a new park as a result of the deproclamation of Vaalbos National Park. DNA was extracted from the blood samples and the V4 hypervariable region of the 18S rRNA gene of any piroplasm parasites present was amplified by PCR. The RLB hybridisation technique was used to identify piroplasm parasites. Theileria spp. were identified and full-length 18S rRNA genes were amplified, cloned and sequenced. The results indicated the presence of novel Theileria spp. phylogenetically very closely related to both Theileria sp. (sable) and Theileria separate. The ticks collected were all Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, which has been shown to be capable of acting as a vector for Theileria spp. All animals appeared to be in good health at the time of sampling and after relocation. It is thus possible that, as with several other wildlife species, the Theileria spp. identified here do not cause disease under normal circumstances and that a situation of endemic stability exists. Once the host is under any form of stress, however, overt clinical disease may well become evident. The significance of these Theileria spp. should not be underestimated, and care should be taken not to transmit the organisms into new areas. More research will need to be conducted to determine the exact clinical significance of these findings and the role of Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi as a potential vector for these Theileria spp. Copyright / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Veterinary Tropical Diseases / unrestricted

Interpreter Attributes and Their Impact on Visitor Outcomes in National Park Service Interpretive Programs

McLean, Kevin Daniel 15 March 2013 (has links)
By revealing deeper meanings and connecting the visitor to the resource, interpretation strives to accomplish a number of goals. Interpretation can increase knowledge of a program\'s topic, change the visitor's attitude toward something, change future behaviors, and increase appreciation for a place and its resources. While literature exists professing best practices for interpretation, little empirical support is present in the research literature to validate these practices' individual links to desired outcomes. This study empirically identifies attributes of the interpreter that statistically linked to visitor outcomes. We tracked 31 interpreter attributes and 10 intended outcomes of interpreters in 376 live interpretive programs in 24 units of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and conducted visitor surveys immediately following the programs. This research addresses the following question: Which interpreter attributes most consistently lead to desired outcomes? Our research shows that the interpreter attributes most consistently associated with positive visitor outcomes were the interpreter's apparent degree of confidence and expression authentic emotion. The results can be used to inform interpretive training throughout the National Park Service. / Master of Science

An Urban Park Design for a Neighborhood Environment in Logan, Utah

Mayor-Reed, Carol 01 May 1977 (has links)
My continued professional and personal interest in the functions and design of public parks influenced me to generate a project theses that explores various aspects of a park's development. My intent is summarized as follows: 1. investigation of social and physical aspects of public spaces in the urban environment 2. generation of a realistic project program based on the needs and desires of the specific user groups for a case study park site 3. application of a design methodology to the case study park site 4. development of a site design that meets program requirements 5. production of the working drawings necessary for the park's implementation to further investigate construction techniques This project thesis has little value as a contribution of significant information to the landscape architectural design profession. However, it served as a viable approach for specific and thorough investigation of public spaces and an application of a park in an urban situation.
