Problém energeticky optimální jízdy vlaku / The problem of energy-efficient train control

The Diploma thesis deals with the problem of energy-efficient train control. It presents the basic survey of mathematical models used in the problem of energy-efficient train control, analysis of optimal driving regimes, determining optimal switching times between optimal driving regimes and timetabling of the train. The mathematical formulation of the problem is done using Newton's second law of motion and other known physical laws. To analyse optimal driving regimes and determine the switching times between optimal driving regimes, we apply tools of optimal control theory, particularly Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. The timetabling of the train is discussed from the numerical solution of the settled non-linear programming problem.

The thesis is about the programmatic exchange and confluence between production processes, public transportation and people. The proposed intervention would be developed to fit in with the City of Tshwane Spatial development framework and an industracity vision and framework for the location in Pretoria West, developed by the framework group. The new intervention will deal with both production process and public activity in the design of a train station and intermodal freight warehouse. The site location is in Pretoria West, a mixed use suburb with restricted industry, business, retail, flats and single residential areas. The site is the Pretoria West Power Station an intersect fir existing infrastructure and public transportation routes. The aim of the investigation is the integration of public functions with industrial functions in ways that contest monotonous urban environments, preserving the heritage of the site in the outcome. The research questions what can be done to facilitate the return of lost production, increase the interaction of people and processes and address the decaying historical fabric of the Pretoria West Power Station. The study examines the history of production and railway stations, uses descriptive survey methods, precedent studies and architectural and urban theory to inform the intervention. The aim of the design is to transform an industrial site into a vibrant integrated environment, introducing programmes that will attract people , but keep the industrial character intact. The character of the site will be conserved through the introduction of new light industries, keeping the memory of process. The design concept links into the idea of electrical input and output exchanges of a power station. It focuses on the exchanges of energy, physical and visual exchanges between heritage, people and products, service exchanges and exchanges in function between freight and passengers and in context - heritage and production. The design objectives are to extend the railway line as a suspended platform to provide access and exchange for freight and passengers and to depart from the introverted nature of the existing buildings to encourage public interaction with the history of the site and the production processes. The switching unit enables the operation of the train control system. The outline of the design is formed by a power switch operated with a microprocessor. In addition, for the increase in safety the switching unit contains a control processor, which is controlling the right function of a work microprocessor and the failure-free state of a power switch.

Considerations in the practical implementation of a travelling wave cochlear implant processor

Speech processing in the human cochlea introduces travelling waves on the basilar membrane. These travelling waves have largely been ignored in most processing strategies. This study implements a hydrodynamical model in a speech processing strategy in order to investigate the neural spike train patterns for a travelling wave processing strategy. In cochlear implants a trade-off remains between the simulation rate and the number of electrode channels. This trade-off was investigated in the proposed travelling wave strategy. Taking into consideration existing current spread and electrical stimulation models, predicted neural spike train responses have shown that stimulating fewer channels (six and four) at stimulation rates of 2 400 pps and 3 600 pps gives better approximations of predicted normal hearing responses for input frequencies of 200 Hz, 600 Hz and 1 kHz, compared to stimulating more channels at lower channel stimulation rates. The predicted neural spike train patterns suggest that these resulting neural patterns might contain both spatial and temporal information that could be extracted by the auditory system. For a frequency of 4 kHz the predicted neural patterns for a channel-number stimulation-rate configuration of 2 - 7 200 pps suggested that although there is no travelling wave delay information, the predicted neural patterns still contain temporal information. The predicted ISI histograms show peaks at the input tone period and multiples thereof, with clusters of spikes evident around the tone period in the predicted spatio-temporal neural spike train patterns. Similar peaks at the tone period were observed for calculated ISI histograms for predicted normal hearing neural patterns and measured neural responses. The predicted spatio-temporal neural patterns for the input frequency of 200 Hz show the travelling wave delay with clusters of spikes at the tone period. This travelling wave delay can also be seen from predicted normal hearing neural responses. The current spread, however, shows a significant distortion effect around the characteristic frequency place where the travelling wave delay increases rapidly. Spacing electrodes more closely results in an increase in this distortion, with the nerve fibre threshold decreasing in adjacent populations of nerve fibres, increasing the probability of firing. The current spread showed a more limited distortion effect on travelling wave delays when electrodes were spaced across the cochlea, at an electrode spacing of 6.08 mm. ISI histogram results also showed increased peaks around the tone period and multiples thereof. This thesis addresses how the travellers participate in the production of space during train travels. It is based on a study of intervjues made in December 2013 with six members of the Swedish parliament who all are frequent travellers on the high speed train between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Using Henri Lefebvres theory of the production of space and contemporary theories on spending time during train travel combined with theories of how space and time are bound together as a timespace. The conclusion is that traveller do participate in the production of the train space by activities taking place based on the special conditions of the trainspace during the journey. Activities that forms the idea of lived space on the train as one of three spaces based on Lefebvres model of the triad of space. The study also identify the need of further research on the train space as a space of its own as we spend more and more time in this space.

Developing Markov chain models for train delay evolution in winter climate

The traffic on Swedish railways is increasing and punctuality is of important matter for both passenger and freight trains. The problem of modeling train delay evolution is complex since conflicts between trains can occur and since a delay can have a wide variety of causes. Swedish railways faces in addition harsh winter climate. Studies of railways in Scandinavia have shown that harsh winter climate decreases the punctuality of trains. This thesis work investigates the possibilities of modeling train delay evolution as continuous time Markov processes and which specific modeling choices are preferable. It also further assesses the impact of a harsh winter climate on the delay evolution. The studied segments are Stockholm - Umeå and Luleå - Kiruna. Both over one winter season. It was found that a change in the time schedule, which in a way redefines the delay, allows for a better fit and better prediction capabilities. It reduced the MSE of the prediction by 50 %. As for the weather variables, four variables were included together with their week long moving averages. Low temperatures were found to increase the risk of a delay (Hazard ratio of 1.10) as well as to decrease the chance of recovering from a delay (Hazard ratio of 0.91). No other significant weather impacts were found.
