Pevnostní návrh ostruhy letadla / Strength design of the aircraft spur

Profota, Martin January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis deals with computational stress-strain analysis of the tailskid of airplane L410 NG with main focus firstly the check current design of the tailskid and then the design another design solution with the able to absorb as much as possible the deformation energy. Solution of this problem is performed using computational modeling utilizing numerical simulation of quasi-static and crash deformation load of the tailskid with using explicit Finite Element Method (FEM) in program ABAQUS v6.14. After the introduction with problem situation and tailskid assembly introductory part is devoted to the research study of various designs of the tailskid for different types of airplanes. There follows these theoretical general principles of thin-walled structures and buckling of them. Before the creating of the computational model itself, the explicit form of the Finite Element Method is better described. The conclusion of this thesis deals with the mutual comparison of the most advantageous design variants of the tailskid and the selection of the most suitable one of them for the airplane L410 NG.

INTEGRATION OF CONTROL SYSTEMS INTO INTERLOCKING MATERIALS

Ethan West Guenther (13163403) 28 July 2022 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>Architectured materials offer engineers more options for choosing materials with their desired properties. Segmenting materials to create topological interlocking materials (TIMs) creates materials, which can deform in greater amounts without failure and absorb more strain energy. Previous research on TIMs has shown that the stiffness and reaction force of these materials can be directly controlled by controlling the boundary forces offered by the frame which constrains these materials.</p> <p>The research presented in this paper investigated a TIM made into a 1-Dimension beam like structure called a lintel. This research investigated not only the mechanics of this structure, but also developed a method of directly controlling the reaction force at a given displacement using shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. These wires would actuate the boundary pieces used to constrain the system. These actuation wires coupled with force sensors imbedded into the lintel allowed a feedback control loop to be established, which would control the reaction force. The reaction force was then controlled to create a smart structure which could optimize the strain energy absorption under the constraint of a maximum allowable load, similar to cellular solids used in packaging and padding materials.</p> <p>To develop this smart structure, four separate investigations occurred. The first was finite element analysis (FEA) performed to model the loading response of the lintel. This experiment demonstrated that the Mises Truss Model was effective at modelling the lintel. The second was an experimental validation of the FEA model performed in the first investigation. This experiment validated the Mises Truss Model for the lintel. The third investigation simulated the active lintel using computational software and the model of the lintel established in the first two investigations. This experiment demonstrated computationally the ability of SMA wires to control the reaction force as desired in an idealized case. The fourth and final investigation experimentally validated the ability to create and active lintel and created a functioning prototype. This demonstrated experimentally the ability of the active lintel to control reaction force as desired.</p> <p>This project has demonstrated the viability to create smart structures using segmented materials, which in the future may be used in a variety of applications including robotics and adaptive structures in harsh environments. </p>

Investigating the Need for Drainage Layers in Flexible Pavements

Masoud Seyed Mohammad Ghavami (6531011) 10 June 2019 (has links)
<p>Moisture can significantly affect flexible pavement performance. As such, it is crucial to remove moisture as quickly as possible from the pavements, mainly to avoid allowing moisture into the pavement subgrade. In the 1990s the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) adopted an asphalt pavement drainage system consisting of an open-graded asphalt drainage layer connected to edge drains and collector pipes to remove moisture from the pavement system.</p> <p>Over the intervening two decades, asphalt pavement materials and designs have dramatically changed in Indiana, and the effectiveness of the pavements drainage system may have changed. Additionally, there are challenges involved in producing and placing open-graded asphalt drainage layers. They can potentially increase costs, and they tend to have lower strength than traditional dense-graded asphalt pavement layers. </p> <p>Given the potential difficulties, the overall objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the INDOT’s current flexible pavement drainage systems given the changes to pavement cross-sections and materials that have occurred since the open-graded drainage layer was adopted. Additionally, the effectiveness of the filter layer and edge drains were examined.</p><p><br>Laboratory experiments were performed to obtain the hydraulic properties of field-produced asphalt mixture specimens meeting INDOT’s current specifications. The results were used in finite element modeling of moisture flow through pavement sections. Modeling was also performed to investigate the rutting performance of the drainage layers under various traffic loads and subgrade moisture conditions in combination with typical Indiana subgrade soils. The modeling results were used to develop a design tool that can assist the pavement designer in more accurately assessing the need for pavement drainage systems in flexible pavements.<br></p>

Alós Moya, José 21 December 2019 (has links)
[EN] To date, the fire action has been left aside in the bridge design despite this action has been widely considered in other structures such as building and tunnels. This regulatory vacuum, combined with the great economic and social impact of bridge collapses in recent times as a result of fires, has led to a rapid increase in the number of studies related to fire engineering in the field of bridges. Although the action of fire is not entirely unknown in the field of structures, there are a number of singularities that prevent the direct transposition of recommendations or simplified fire models from such fields. In this context, the study started by using a real fire which occurred in the state of Alabama in 2002 and led to the demolition of the 37-meter main span of a composite concrete and steel bridge to introduce and validate a methodology that numerically addresses the problem by uncoupling the problem in three different models: fire model, thermal model and mechanical model. Once the validation was accomplished at a general level, it was discovered that, although the geometrical data were quite adjusted to reality, the definition of the fire had involved a large number of hypotheses. That is why carrying out an experimental campaign to record the power of the fire, the gas and steel temperatures and the vertical deflections of a bridge built ad-hoc on the campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València became a priority. This 6-meter single span experimental bridge was subjected to fire loads of up to 1.3 MW. Through the use of the information recorded during the experimental campaign, the fire model, the thermal model and the mechanical model were validated. Moreover, the importance of wind in the action of fire, the magnitude of spatial thermal gradients and the urgency of developing simplified procedures which allow the consideration of fire as an action in the field of bridges were also highlighted. Last but not least, the validation of the different models allowed the author to include useful guidelines in order to define future experimental campaigns with more powerful fires and longer span bridges. / Alós Moya, J. Vliv nastavení a konfigurace rovnačky na výsledky simulace kosoúhlého rovnání / Influence of setting and configuration of straightening machine on results of simulation of cross-roll straightening

Ščerba, Bořek January 2020 (has links)
Analytical methods or implicit finite element method (FEM) with beam elements to model straightened bar were used to analyze straightening process in multi-staggered cross-roll straighteners up to now. These are effective but require certain simplifications. Aim of this thesis is to create an explicit FEM model allowing usage of solid elements for circular bar without disproportional increase of computational time. This may lead to deeper understanding of the straightening process. The model is to be verified using straightening tables and then used to quantify influence of rollers configuration on results of the straightening process.
