Souvislost čichových aktivit a čichových schopností a všímavosti vůči pachům u šestiletých dětí / The relation of odor exposure, olfactory abilities, and odour awareness for six year olds children.

Vojtušová Mrzílková, Radka January 2018 (has links)
A great degree of interindividual variability has been established in measures of psychophysical olfactory performance and odor awareness in both children and adults. Previous studies have suggested the possibility that one of the factors that might contribute to this variability might be the degree of odor exposure in everyday contexts. In the present study, we hypothesized that children exposed to a greater variety of odors on a more frequent basis would exhibit higher odor identification and odor awareness scores. We have found an effect of odor exposure on the children's olfactory knowledge as reflected in their reports of olfactory behavior, but not olfactory abilities. In so doing, we replicated some of the previous findings in the literature of female over male advantage in the olfactory domain. Namely, we report that girls showed a more profound understanding of their olfactory environment and a greater degree of olfaction-oriented behavior, which was not accounted for by a gender difference in verbal fluency. Nevertheless, girls did not outperform boys on either of the measures of olfactory performance. Semi-longitudinal and longitudinal studies in verbally proficient children, employing both self- and parental reports of children's odor exposure and repeated olfactory testing, might...

Čichové vnímání u první epizody schizofrenie a akutních a přechodných psychotických poruch / Olfactory Perception in First-Episode Schizophrenia and Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorders

Hofmannová, Zdena January 2019 (has links)
Research suggests that olfactory perception of patients with schizophrenia differs from healthy people. In the context of previously conducted research, the present thesis addresses the differences in the abilities of identification and discrimination of odours and assessment of perceived odour qualities (pleasantness, familiarity, intensity, edibility) between patients with schizophrenia or acute and transient psychotic disorders and healthy volunteers, taking into account gender differences; in addition, the differences in the relationship between identification of odours and evaluation of the perceived qualities of odours between patients and healthy persons were explored as well as relationship between the severity of negative symptoms and olfactory perception. In line with other studies, deficits were found in patients in identification and discrimination of odours and in the assessment of odour familiarity compared to healthy subjects, with no gender differences. There were no differences in the relationship between the identification of odours and assessment of the perceived qualities of odours between patients and volunteers, and association of olfactory abilities and the assessment of perceived qualities of odours with the severity of negative symptoms was found only for identification of...

Analýza problematických míst při zvládání matematiky u žáků s poruchou autistického spektra (a jejich vztah ke kognitivnímu zpracovávání žáků) / Analysis of Solving Math Problems in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (and its relation to cognitive processing of students)

Sotáková, Hana January 2019 (has links)
The dissertation thesis addresses the topic of mathematical tasks processing in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and problematic points of their solution. The aim of this work is to delineate methods that ASD students use to approach these tasks and solve them. We focus primarily on whether it is possible to identify different procedures than those used by typically developing students, and whether these procedures show specifics corresponding to distinct cognitive processes. In the theoretical part we provide a theoretical background for the study. Firstly, we create a frame to understand the complexity of autism, furthermore we deal with psychological theories examining the topic, and describe specifics of development of ASD students during their adolescence. Thereafter, we reflect on studies addressing mathematical skills of ASD students. Mathematics is considered as their great strength, however is not sufficiently scrutinized, as highlighted by various international studies (for example Oswald et al., 2016). The empiric part is based on qualitative methodology and pursues comparisons of mathematical tasks processing between six ASD students and typically developing peers. We strive to document differences and common points in solutions as well as to analyze cognitive processes of...

Knoetze, Johannalie Susanna 30 October 2007 (has links)
Emotions and its effect on the individual’s general functioning are a key concept of humanity. The modern child is confronted with all kinds of emotional developmental tasks with direct influence on his ultimate figuration to adulthood. Emotion is an internal experience in contrast to the fact that various reactions are displayed externally as a result thereof. Children’s behavior demonstrates that which are experienced internally. It might also be a way to conceal especially those emotions. Emotional awareness manifests through demonstration or concealing of inner feelings. The child’s external reactions to inner feelings must be based on knowledge of what is being experienced. Behavior is mostly a reaction to ignorance of the inner experience which might manifest in anxiety attacks, anger and emotional episodes. Empowerment of the child to recognize and experience emotions enables him to gain insight of emotions as a natural part of human nature. This causes him to develop the ability to express emotion in a socially acceptable manner. The process of emotional awareness alerts the child to the fact those specific emotions results in specific bodily experiences. Emotional awareness is an indication of the child’s knowledge of emotions and its impact in emotional, physical and psychological reactions. It provides an explanation for anxieties and fears which enables the child to own these feelings and take control of it. The middle childhood phase is the period that follows the achievement of a mass of developmental skills like the mastery of language, control over bodily functions and cognitive abilities. These abilities are refined in this phase. Emotional awareness and especially concepts of self and the purpose of individuals in the systems that surrounds him evolves. Considerable part of the child’s day during this phase, is spent at school. Emotional wellbeing can thus efficiently be recognized and addressed by the educational system. The educator’s knowledge of emotional awareness will ensure meaningful emotional development of learners. Results obtained from questionaires completed by educators in primary education indicates a need for understanding of problem behavior in children. The need for education on emotional awareness and techniques for development of emotional awareness in learners is also expressed. The focus of this study is thus on the concept of educators regarding the emotional awareness of learners; the role of emotional awareness in the child’s development and the educators knowledge regarding development of emotional skills and promotion of emotional awareness. / Dissertation (MSD (Play Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Social Work and Criminology / MSD / unrestricted

Zahradníčková, Lucie January 2020 (has links)
The following master's thesis deals with the issue of media literacy in relation to elderly population. The theoretical basis of this work contains of the theory of media literacy and media education, which is regarded to as a tool for cultivating media literacy. In addition to media education, the work also presents other ways to acquire media competencies, which are so needed in today's information society. After the introduction of theoretical approaches to media literacy, there is also a description of selected methods applied to determine the level of media literacy. The next part includes a description of media literacy in relation to senior citizens who form a very specific group in this area. As part of my own research survey, the level of media literacy in a group of 12 senior citizens is mapped on the basis of a proposed tool for determining the level of media literacy, which is based on the presented theoretical approaches. Qualitative research includes a detailed analysis of data, which were collected through interviews with the target group and which were supplemented by practical exercises. Media literacy research focuses on the area of knowledge, abilities and skills, and patterns of media use. According to the collected and analyzed data, a description of all respondents is...

Faktory přispívající k interindividuálním rozdílům v čichových schopnostech a všímavosti vůči pachům / Factors contributing to interindividual differences in olfactory abilities and odour awareness

Nováková, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
The main body of the thesis deals with selected factors underlying the considerable variability in human olfactory abilities and some odour awareness-related measures, addressed in samples ranging in age from middle childhood to young adulthood. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part (Chapter 1), first presents the major advances and developments that brought about something of a renaissance of scientific interest in the human sense of smell, including the recent proliferation of psychophysical studies, both basic research and clinical. Next, an outline of olfactory psychophysical measures and related olfactory abilities that are of relevance to the studies presented in this thesis is provided. Subsequently, the selected factors contributing to interindividual differences in olfactory abilities, that have been addressed by this thesis, are reviewed, namely the effect of sex (or gender), which is approached from a developmental perspective, childhood gender nonconformity, and personality. Finally, intraindividual fluctuations in olfactory performance are also mentioned in brief. Next, the focus shifts to odour awareness by first introducing the various approaches that can be adopted to get closer to the real-life context as opposed to laboratory setting (where most olfactory studies continue to be...

Barou-Dagues, Marie 08 1900 (has links)
Choosing a mate is an important decision for an animal. Because this decision significantly affects an individual’s reproductive success, it must base its choice according to different traits that reflect the quality of potential mates. Recently, a particular attention has been given to cognitive traits in mate choice context. Indeed, the ability to perceive, integrate, memorize and use the information available in the environment allows individuals to act properly when facing a problem and to adjust their behaviours accordingly. Given that females could benefit from choosing males capable of responding to environmental changes, those with good cognitive abilities should have privileged access to females in mate choice contexts. Some evidence supports this idea by revealing positive relationships between males’ cognitive abilities and their mating and reproductive success as well as female mating preference for male cognitive abilities. However, these results stay contrasted, particularly in non-human animals for which the importance of mate choice in the evolution of cognition is still not clearly defined. The objective of my PhD was to explore the role of mate choice in the evolution of male and female cognition by combining an observational approach using a monogamous bird species and a theoretical approach using an agent-based model. Specifically, by running laboratory experiments on zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), I tested whether females demonstrated a mate preference for males able to adjust their foraging behaviour following an environmental change. Then, I investigated whether females, depending on their own cognitive abilities, demonstrated a mate preference for better performers in four different psychometric tests. I finally explored the relative role of natural and sexual selection by simulating the evolution of cognition under different environmental scenarios. The results of this PhD project revealed that zebra finch females preferred males exhibiting greater behavioural plasticity in their foraging tactic use as well as males performing better in several cognitive tasks. However, females’ preference for cognitive abilities was not unanimous but depended on females’ own abilities to perform in these tasks. At the evolutionary scale, intersexual selection through mate choice changed the evolutive patterns observed under natural selection alone. In fact, intersexual selection promoted good cognitive abilities under most favourable environments but maintained cognitive diversity under the harsher ones. Taken together, these results suggest that mate choice plays an important role in the evolution and maintenance of cognitive diversity within populations. Nevertheless, the evolutive consequences of mate choice on individual cognitive abilities should depend on i) the adaptive value of mating with a male with better performance, and thus, on the cognitive ability considered, ii) the female characteristics and iii) the local environment during mate choice.

Amyotte, Katharine 05 1900 (has links)
1. Les cités domestique, civique, industrielle, de l’opinion, inspirée et marchande / Industrial designers work in a multitude of sectors wherein understanding consumer and their choices is fundamental. This means that understanding why industrial designers’ choices as professionals allows them to be on the lookout for personal biases that can influence the value of the project. Professional ethics may involve moral components that affect the designer as much as their product and that are no longer linked to the aesthetics of the object alone. There are values attached to that object. In this study our interest is to understand the industrial designer’s way of practicing in these diverse sectors, especially when the sector is that of sexuality and sexual health. While in constant search of innovation, the field of sexual health involves issues that arise in terms of taboos, cultural diversity, beliefs and personal backgrounds. Being human, the designer is confronted with states of moral conscience in this field. This study questions the moral commitment of a design professional grappling with issues that present strong moral implications. We explore the industrial designers’ intentions and justifications and their personal implication vis-à-vis such subjects. This study proceeds as an exploratory study, with data collection that included 4 narratives extrapolated from a design charrette with four teams, and a total of eleven participants. Exploratory analysis of the justifying discourse of designers is supported by The Six cities2 model proposed by Boltanski and Thévenot (1991) in the book “De la justification” and focuses on social competences in terms of justification of decision-making. The overarching hypothesis is that the work of the designer will be justified mainly by an “industrial city” perspective, supported by the principle of efficiency, a quality specific to industrial design product development. The analysis revealed emergent themes and issues of relevance to this model and the principles explored. This study proposes that the designer has a role to play in the consideration of topics with a strong moral implication. The designers’ discourse develops according to the constraints encountered and the type of project being developed. In addition, the design project can be impacted by professional’s comfort with such a difficult topic or even their personal preferences, and. ultimately understanding the motivating aspects of their choices during the project is of value in future products and the training received by designers.

Individual rhythmic abilities and temporal predictability : an electrophysiological approach

Kadi, Melissa 04 1900 (has links)
It is known that rhythmic abilities vary widely in the general population. However, our understanding of the link between these variations at the behavioral level and their underlying brain electrophysiological patterns is uncertain. The aim of the present work was to investigate the electrophysiological correlates of individual differences in rhythmic abilities (i.e., perceptual, sensorimotor). Participants (n=43) performed two tasks of rhythmic abilities (beat alignment test and paced tapping) from the Battery for the Assessment of Auditory Sensorimotor and Rhythmic abilities (BAASTA, Dalla Bella et al., 2017). Moreover, the brain activity (EEG) of these participants was recorded while they performed a temporal predictability task. This task consisted in an oddball paradigm where standard (i.e., irrelevant tones) and deviant (i.e., relevant tones) sinusoidal tones were presented in isochronous (i.e., regular) and temporally random (i.e., irregular) sequences. Results indicated that individual differences in rhythmic abilities are reflected in electrophysiological markers of temporal predictability. Across all participants, improved sensorimotor abilities were associated with smaller amplitudes of the P50 auditory evoked potential to standard tones, suggesting increased inhibition of irrelevant stimuli. Moreover, the amplitude of the N100 component serve as a potential marker of the ability to process stimuli deviance. Indeed, individuals with good rhythm abilities have less negative amplitudes of N100 for deviant tones presented in the isochronous sequence, suggesting enhanced discrimination of deviant tones. Altogether, these findings add to our understanding of the processes underlying individual differences in rhythmic abilities.
