No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivo total.pdf: 3180013 bytes, checksum: af9b75ccb5db9313b0156f70cef6f81d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-11-09 / In this study, we investigated scenes of joint attention that occurs between teachers and children and among children themselves in the language acquisition process in a day care center from a public early childhood institution, with the following objectives: to analyze the structure and functioning of these social interactions; to identify skills these children have, considering the use of language and its multimodality; to discuss the importance of these scenes in fostering this acquisitional process. During our investigations, we chose to do a qualitative research, a case study type, of a longitudinal character. Video recordings and their transcripts constituted the corpus investigation. Filming occurred within a year, with weekly, biweekly and monthly intervals, respectively, and was directed to spontaneous and planned situations found in the institution‟s pedagogical routine, observing the structure and functioning of these mentioned scenes. Sixteen children between 09-30 months old, six teachers and the researcher were the subjects involved. We sought for elements in studies of joint attention, represented by Tomasello (1995; 1983; 2003; 2005; 2009) and Bruner (1974, 1983), and language, trying to establish a dialogue with the following authors in an interactionist perspective: Vygotsky (1991; 2005); Bakhtin (1988; 2003); Bruner (1983); and Tomasello (2003). The hypotheses to the questions that guided the research report that: in the day care center, scenes of joint attention between adults and children, and among children themselves, are structured and driven by adult language; in the these scenes, there is the child‟s perception of the other's intention in Tomasellians molds; children identify insights and statements of significance in the scenes mentioned; social interactions of joint attention are important for language acquisition and use by children. Our data confirm these hypotheses, however suggests reworking the first one. Therefore, children participation in these scenes seems to be driven also by the intense and constant use of this interaction format in the institution‟s pedagogical routine, making children to become experienced in them. Among the evidence of this study we included: another type of joint attention, the quadratic interaction; two complex cognitive skills in the children who participate in these mentioned scenes, the redirected and collective/collaborative attention; and evidence which characterize that these same children recognize the other's intentions through language in its multimodal use. We concluded that social interactions of joint attention between teachers and children are constitutive of language, in its multimodal use, and are relevant in the acquisition process of this phenomenon, which seems to be driven not only by the adult as an interactive partner, but by children themselves. We hope that this study will contribute to the debate in the sciences dealing with language in social interactions, and as part of early childhood institutions.

Pereira, Jos? Everaldo 03 November 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T14:36:22Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 JoseEP.pdf: 1644269 bytes, checksum: 79b8ec25e3b491428bb42be521ebaf35 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-11-03 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / This paper presents a research realized with Physics, Chemistry and Biology teachers, and it aimed to evaluate: 1) the development level of those teachers regarding the abilities that make possible to teach high school students about how to measure in practical and experimental work; 2) the formatives necessities regarding those abilities; and 3) the order of priority for teacher?s formation regarding those abilities. The study is based on the activity theory, from A. N. Leontiev (1983), since we considerer the teacher?s formation a kind of activity for which the category necessity is source of motivation and in which is a necessary condition for professionality and for the professional development. A questionnaire with open and closed questions was applied to 116 teachers during three pedagogic workshops realized to dynamize the science laboratory. The instrument allowed us to obtain the personal and professional profile of the participants, as well as their development level, their formative necessities and their order of priority about the teaching of the abilities related to the work of testing measuring hypothesis, regarding: a) to operationalize variables of a hypothesis in experimental work; b) to measure in practical and experimental work; c) to estimate possible measuring mistakes and use proper procedures to minimize them; d) to estimate the validity of a measuring; and e) to estimate the confiability of a measuring. The research results indicated some limitations of the teachers about their development level in all the analyzed abilities. More than 90% of the teachers considered those deficiencies as necessities of the continuing formation. Most of them (about 54%) expressed immediate priority for formation in each one of the abilities. From a correlation, using the statistic chi-square test, between the development level and the formative necessities for the five abilities, the obtained results allow us to assure that, for all those teaching abilities, there is a strong correlation between the development level and the formative necessity. This situation is symptomatic of the importance of approaching more the science teaching and the teacher?s formation on practical and experimental work in high school as key-component of scientific education in basic education.

Essays on behavioral economics of confidence, creativity and education / Essais sur l'économie comportementale de la confiance, de la créativité et de l'éducation

Gazel Junior, Marco Antonio 28 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the growing economic literature on noncognitive skills that are critical for life success, specially for academic success. It comprises four essays based on behavioral and experimental economics approaches, with two main objectives. The first objective is to study two noncognitive skills, namely self-confidence and creativity. We aim at understanding the determinants of self-confidence, and the impact of creative potential on economic outcomes. The second objective is to study how school systems impact educational decisions, educational outcomes and intergenerational mobility, where noncognitive skills may play an important role, specially self-confidence and motivation. We observe an important impact of the noncognitive abilities on behavior and economic results, especially for the educational achievements. Taken all our evidences together, it seems fundamental that schools worry about the development of these noncognitive abilities - and not only of the cognitive abilities. Helping students to have better estimates of self-confidence, favoring the development of creative potential, and stimulating motivation and effort should be part of the education that pupils receive in schools ; promoting then better decisions, better outcomes and a more equitable society.

Dynamic assessment i svenskspråkig kontext : En explorativ studie av sex-sjuåringars narrativa utveckling

Kristoffersson, Louise January 2011 (has links)
ABSTRACT In standardized tests, culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) children usually perform at similar level as children with language impairment (LI), largely due to the fact that most standardized assessment tools have been developed on the basis of a monolingual population with mainstream backgrounds. As an alternative to standardized tests, a dynamic assessment approach has been advocated to assess the language abilities of CLD children. Dynamic assessment is considered to reduce test bias, since it measures the child's learning potential (i.e. modifiability) instead of the child's static performance on a certain task at one point in time. The aim of the present study was to explore if dynamic assessment was as successful in a Swedish context as it has been in American contexts. The study had a test-teach-retest design with every session conducted individually. Five typically developing monolingual Swedish children, aged six to seven, were asked to tell two stories on the basis of two comparable picture sequences. In between, a teaching session, that consisted of a mediated learning experience (MLE), was conducted. During the MLE session, a certain aspect of storytelling, chosen from the analysis of the test narrative, was targeted and 5 trained. After the MLE session, the child's modifiability was measured using five-point scales for teaching effort and student responsiveness. The test and retest results were then compared. The DA results indicated that three of the children were typically developing and that two of the children, contrary to fact, had some kind of language learning disability. The material used was found to have limitations in its narrow rating criteria and complicated scripts for the MLE sessions. The conclusions were that (a) the assessment was influenced by the examiner's subjective rating and therefore unable to show the children's true narrative abilities, (b) that the MLE material was not fully suited for younger school aged children and (c) not suitable in the Swedish context. Further studies have to be made with a larger number of children, including CLD children, to be able to tell whether dynamic assessment is a suitable method in Swedish contexts or not. A special DA material for Swedish assessments would then be useful.

Legrain, Laure 18 December 2010 (has links)

Swanepoel, Geertje 08 October 2004 (has links)
A hospitalisation experience is serious for every toddler, and implies physical and emotional trauma of one kind or another. The reaction of the toddler in terms of this trauma in effect is a normal reaction to an unnatural situation, through which he tries to be in control of himself and his unknown environment. His lack of experience, incomplete cognitive reasoning, and lack of insight cause anxiety and stress for the toddler. Misbehaviour because of account of his anxiety and fear which the form part of the toddlers attempts to control and get hold of this unknown situation. The research is primarily aimed at how the therapist, parents and hospital personnel can prepare, assess and support the toddler, in terms of handling the hospitalisation process. Seeing that there is normally no one to blame for the toddlers admission to hospital, the child directs his anger and anxiety at himself, resulting in inner conflict and intense feelings of guilt. The research project aims to focus on preparation of the pre-primary toddler for hospitalisation, by using playtherapeutic intervention, in order to lessen the fear and anxiety of the experience. This goal was achieved by a literature study, an empirical study with the aid of application of a preparatory intervention program, as well as an assessment and an evaluation of the program, in order to make recommendations, regarding the research. Optimal care, and preparation of sick toddlers for admission in hospital, includes more than satisfying the child’s physical needs. It also asks for gratification of the toddler’s psychosocial needs. Support and preparation of both the child and his/her parents form an integral component of the sanitary care process. Therapeutic activities with the child that is going to hospital, can, according to the goals of the research study, be instrumental in reducing fear, promote self-esteem, become acquainted with the medical setting and procedures, as well as providing in the toddlers physical, emotional, psychological and psychosocial needs. A complete and refined play therapeutic preparation program was developed and evaluated through the findings of the empirical and literature study. The process of intervention research was followed in the empirical study, where data was obtained with the aid of a purposive sample, of 20 hospitalised toddler respondents. Creswell’s dominant-less-dominant model was utilised. A dominant quantitative approach was being followed, through witch data was assembled by a self developed structured observation instrument, as a post-test for both the experimental as well as the comparative group. The less dominant, but equally important qualitative approach, that consisted of 9 playtherapeutic sessions with experimental group, field notes and interviews with parents, enrich and verified the quantitative data. According to the integration of the quantitative and qualitative findings, the conclusion can be made that the preparatory playtherapeutic program had a positive impact on the way fear and the toddlers handled anxiety during hospitalisation, with less misbehaviour. The findings show that the developed preparatory playtherapeutic program can be implemented with great success and confidence, with toddlers that are going to be hospitalised. It is recommended that further research can be done on development and evaluation of preparation programmes for toddlers from less fortunate communities. Seeing that individual sessions may due to financial difficulties be less tenable, group sessions and community work can be recommended to reach larger groups of children, as well as creating community awareness for the needs of toddlers, related to hospitalisation. / Thesis (DPhil (Play Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work / unrestricted
