Student and Family Perspectives on Gifted and Advanced Academics Participation for African American High School Students

Zeske, Karen Marie 08 1900 (has links)
Many students and their families do not understand the impact of students’ involvement in gifted or advanced academics educational programs and their potentially positive effects and challenges. Nationally African American students are underrepresented in gifted and advanced academics courses in high schools; however, African American students and families often do not advocate for their inclusion in these educational pathways. A survey of literature supporting this study of voices of African American families concerning gifted and advanced academics participation focused on (1) the historical underpinnings for equity and excellence for African American and for gifted and advanced academics learners, (2) how the lack of an agreed upon definition of gifted and advanced academics by the professional field might contribute to the problem, and (3) how African American parents made educational decisions for and with their children, especially concerning college. Employing semi-structured interviews and a focus group, this qualitative case study examined how four students from each of three groups, gifted and talented, advanced academics, and neither, and a representative group of their parents perceived these programs and their children’s involvement in them within the framework provided by a single school district. African American families in this study asked for a partnership to support their children in building resiliency to choose and remain in gifted and advanced academics programs. Students reported that they could access more rigorous coursework if they were supported by mentoring peers, in addition to informed family and educators. The matching intonations and word choices of the children and parents suggested academic success pathways as students carried the voices of their families with them.

Mobilisation collective des professionnels et représentations sociales de la performance organisationnelle : le cas des enseignants-chercheurs dans les universités françaises / Professional’s collective mobilization and social representations of the organizational performance : the case of French university’s academics

Zeller, Christelle 07 December 2015 (has links)
In fact, the authors have divided opinions about the compatibility between the professional commitment and the organizational commitment. This thesis seeks to understand the professional’s collective mobilization to their organization performance by asking the social representation of the organizational performance. Our study of quantitative and exploratory nature question the academics of the French University who are facing, since previous years, significant reforms which implemented a management approach based on the performance. Therefore, the managerial logics took a place beside the prevailing professional logics. The results reveal that the academics defined the performance of the university as being the scientific publications and the student’s integration into the workplace. In the face of this representation widely shared about the performance of the university, two opposing groups: the first one, the majority group, is favourable to the concept of the performance, and the second one, in the minority, is unfavourable. From then on, four different profiles of collective mobilization emerge from the results, thus, revealing different identity hybridizations. So, the academics’ professional identity evolves. They identify more to their institution and integrate its needs. However, the emerging results stress, on one hand, that these four mobilization profiles are, more and less, supported by a strong Public Service Motivation. On the other hand, the most mobilized profiles need a high organizational support

Lutas simbólicas e doxa: jornalistas e acadêmicos no caso da \'lista dos improdutivos\' da USP / Symbolic struggles and \'doxa\': journalists and academics in the lista dos improdutivos affair

Chiaramonte, Aline Rodrigues 27 November 2015 (has links)
The interface amongst two distinct fields of symbolical production is the subject of this research. Using as a heuristic resource the lista dos improdutivos affair, a controversy raised by the publication of a list on the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo (list that was elaborated by the rectory of University of São Paulo) correlating names of professors who supposedly had not published any work during the years of 1985 to 1986, the aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between academics and journalists regarding the struggle for the imposition of a principles of classification related to the brazilian society organization. The interaction between the agents and groups that give shape to this event allow the researcher to access socio-historical realities, working as open windows to the social structures, revealing relations of power, fields of positions and their rules. Accordingly, the study of this moment of interaction focused on the trajectory of the agents involved on it enable to comprehend their attitudes, conceptions and the mobilized resources on the conflict that had been instituted. Therefore, in the misleading guise of describing the problems of the university, the positions adopted by the involved parts in this matter reveal their points of view about the process of modernization on the institutions and the State. In these terms, the relations of the journalism and the university are studied as a competitive approach, in so far that a group of journalists of the Folha de S. Paulo, owners of a specific set of skills, look forward on spreading the idea of the necessity of institutional modernization, simultaneously as a elite of academics, who hold the symbolic resources to impose their way of thinking, show themselves as favor to the idea of building this doxa. Regardless they are not all alike, these conceptions are found in the same records, contributing for the creation of a representation of the State and the society, which was gradually being naturalized and realized at the end of 1980s.

For this purpose three diverse and complementary articles were developed with specific methodologies through which deepens relevant aspects of the proposed discussion. The aim of the first article was to perform a meta-analysis in order to understand the relation between IMA with variables, proxies of innovation, and their impacts in the countries of destination, origin, and destination and origin simultaneously of the researchers. After the elaboration of a rigorous research protocol from 36 articles selected in 15 top journals of the Scopus and ISI Web of Science databases, 20 variables were identified, including five of them, with positive, negative or null impacts for the countries. The study brings contributions to the academy insofar as IMA generates innovation through the development of research networks, the increase of publications with better quality, the increase of citations, and the generation of partnerships between universities, industries and laboratories that can improve education and science. Knowing the types of innovation that IMA generates enables governments that wish to invest in scientific, technological, economic and social development to choose the best measures of attraction and retention of brains. For industry, technological catch-up and highly skilled labour (HSL), means enhancing competitiveness and capacity building, growth of research and development (R&D), creating new products, patent filing, increased investments and expansion of internationalization. The objective of the second research was to investigate which of the following factors is most important in the academics mobility decision: the impact of the science, technology and innovation (ST&I) infrastructure, or the quality of life in the host country. Were considered journals of scientific prestige and research and development (R&D) institutions as proxies for ST&I and the human development index (HDI) as a proxy for quality of life. These data came from several databases. The results of a multiple linear regression show that, although the ST&I infrastructure takes precedence over quality of life, both are influential factors in academics mobility decisions. The results offer guidance for academics in their decisions regarding mobility, as well as offering guidance for government policy-makers with regard to national investments to address brain drain and brain gain. The third study aimed to investigate the relation between patent filing, proxy for innovation, with IMA, education and applied research. For this purpose, primary databases at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), and secondary databases of the Lattes Platform, Linkedin and Foundation for Research Support of the State of São Paulo (FAPESP) were carried out. The first two Brazilian universities according to the INPI (2014) patent ranking were the University of São Paulo (USP), with a universe of 282 inventors who filed 78 patents followed by the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) with a universe of 190 inventors who filed 60 patents. The results show a positive relation between the number of patents deposited with education, participation in IMA programs and applied research.

Academic Preparation in Cleft Palate for Speech-Language Pathologists: Is the ICF-CY (Who, 2007) Alive and Well?

Graham, Mary Briggs, Palmer, Jackie, Louw, Brenda 07 April 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this project is to determine inclusion of the ICF-CY in Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) training curricula for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs). Survey research was conducted with CLP course instructors across the nation. Results describe the application of the ICF-CY in CLP courses at the graduate level. Recommendations for including the ICF-CY framework are made. Cleft Lip and Palate, one of the most prevalent birth defects in the US, affects 7,090 infants per year with an incidence of approximately 1 in 600 births (Center for Disease Control, 2006). SLPs require skills and competencies in assessing and treating CLP, however the academic and clinical preparation of SLPs regarding CLP remains a topic of concern. Training issues in CLP have been researched since the 1960’s (Vallino et al., 2008). Sharp and O’Gara (2014) suggested discussing training programs regarding the core learning outcomes for entry-level preparation in resonance disorders. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) (WHO, 2007) provides an important, holistic framework for children with CLP. The ICF-CY’s interrelated components emphasize the factors influencing the activities and participation of children with CLP. Despite research recommending incorporation of the ICF-CY into SLP training curricula, the inclusion of the ICF-CY in CLP courses has not been explored to date as far as could be determined. The current study aimed to survey CLP graduate course instructors to describe the content of curricula and to determine the extent to which the ICF-CY is being included and applied in teaching assessment and intervention of CLP. A 35-item questionnaire was constructed to obtain information regarding academic and clinical training in the area of CLP in US graduate programs. Survey questions targeted demographic information regarding the program, course, and instructor. Survey questions also examined the inclusion of the ICF-CY framework into course content regarding assessment and intervention. The survey was administered via an online academic survey tool. The survey was distributed to the department chairs of ASHA accredited SLP graduate programs to be completed by training programs’ faculty who teach the CLP (or related) course. 61 fully completed surveys were eligible 2016 Appalachian Student Research Forum Page 101 for analysis. An item-by-item analysis was performed to describe survey results. Results showed only 23% of respondents reported teaching a course exclusively related to CLP, which confirms concerns related to Vallino et al. (2008) and other researchers. The ICF-CY does not yet appear to be fully integrated into CLP coursework and in response to the question posed by the researchers, does not appear to be alive and well in US CLP curricula. A case is made for the ICF-CY framework to be incorporated into CLP curricula to provide future SLPs a holistic perspective of children with CLP and to extend their thinking about the impact of speech impairment associated with CLP. Including the ICF-CY framework in training will facilitate collaborative inter-professional care of children with CLP. Finally, the inclusion of the ICF components and their interaction into ASHA’s most recent draft of the Scope of Practice in SpeechLanguage Pathology emphasizes the necessity of ICF inclusion in course curriculum to support provision of high-quality services.

Investigation of causes of foaming in industrial waste water treatment and effects of substances in industrial waste water treatment

Maleka, Mamohau Julia 06 1900 (has links)
M-Tech: Chemistry (Vaal University of Technology) / ABSTRACT The research was aimed to study the causes of excessive foaming in a waste water treatment plant. Although the activated sludge process has been adopted to treat this industrial waste water , lots of problems were experienced by the inhibitory effects of toxic compounds that are found in industrial effluents and the foaming stability that was very high. Industrial waste water treatment using sludge processes was found to be more challenging than the normal municipal waste water treatment although the principle is the same; the foaming tendencies were found to be more in industrial waste water. In this study the composition of influents to the waste water treatment plant and operating parameter’s effects on foaming tendencies were examined. The foaming potential in the plant was found to be chemically related due to high contamination of compounds such as phenols, which played a major role in formation of stable foam. It was recommended that there must be pretreatment of the incoming influents to minimize their impact to waste water treatment.

Psychological Distress Among High-Risk Youths First-Year in Collegiate Sport

Jenkins, Cassidy Janay 01 January 2019 (has links)
It is well documented that students from low socioeconomic backgrounds face a significant degree of deficiencies in college opportunity. Previous researchers have shown an estimated 1 in 5 student athletes given the opportunity to compete at the college level come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and encounter more adjustment issues than other students because of the psychological barriers they face. Using Pearlin's theory of psychological distress and Selye's GAS as the foundation, this study explored the extent to which the difference between the perceived time needed and actual time spent in both sports and academic commitment predict psychological distress in first-year high-risk student athletes. Data were collected from 132 first-year high-risk student athletes via an online survey. The survey included Health & Human Service SES questionnaire, Sport and Academic Commitment Questionnaire, and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Multiple regression analysis revealed that sports commitment differences and academic differences were shown not to predict psychological distress. However, the results consistently showed the student athlete has time discrepancies with sport and academics and on average has moderate to severe psychological distress levels. The results are key to continuing the conversation of student athletes' psychological distress levels and establishing better interventions that specifically address the challenges of being a high-risk student athlete. If specific interventions target high-risk student athletes' mental health, they can be better served and more prepared to make the most of the college experience.

All världens kompetens - hur tas den tillvara?

Tipmanoworn, Pamela January 2019 (has links)
An increasingly international labor market for academics within higher education also means a higher recruiting across national borders. This qualitative study has aimed to get knowledge about employed international academics experiences of competence transfer at a higher educational institution in Sweden and where the study's questions focus on how their competence was expected to be and has been utilized. The study was conducted through a qualitative study in which international academics were interviewed about their experiences. The data of the study has been analyzed from a socio-cultural perspective and two research questions were developed to specify the aim. The first question deals with how skills expects to be utilized at their new workplace. The second question deals with how competence has been utilized after beginning their new work, as well as experienced difficulties and opportunities in these processes. The results show there were expectations of the competence to be utilized in the same way as in previous similar work. There were also expectations that the competence would be utilized based on future tasks. The results show that skills are experienced to be utilized in their new work through communication, discussions, meetings and cooperation. The study's most prominent result is that deeper relationships with colleagues are perceived as promotion for competence transfer. The language and physical space are themes which are perceived to constrain or enable the exploitation of skills.
