Recapitalization of Amphibious Operation and Lift

Includes supplementary material. / CAPSTONE PROJECT REPORT / System Engineering and Analysis Cohort 18A and Temasek Defense Systems Institute / Approved for public release, distribution unlimited / The aging Whidbey Island and Harpers Ferry class ships, LSD-41 and 49 respectively, comprise just over one third of the amphibious navy. However, a solution to the capability gap created by the loss of these ships is needed to maintain the effectiveness of the amphibious fleet across a broad spectrum of mission areas. This research effort considers future ship designs and fleet architectures to meet the capability gaps left by the decommissioning of the LSD-41 and 49 class ships. With respect to lift capacity, performance capability, cost and a risk assessment, the analysis showed the LPD-17 or a LSD(X) approximately 30% larger than the existing classes to be acceptable replacement classes. This analysis also supports further research to determine the most robust fleet architecture apart from the current eleven LHA or LHD, eleven LPD and eleven LSD paradigm.

Sleight of Hand: Violence as Performance and the Spectacle of Absence in the Southern Cone

Barefoot, James Collin January 2015 (has links)
I explore the changing use of political violence by the new Latin American military regimes, specifically post-1976 Argentina with comparative analysis towards Augusto Pinochet’s Chile, as well as by those who protested military authoritarianism during the Dirty War and Operation Condor. These military dictatorships adopted aggressive anti-communist ideologies and displayed them through internal, covert violence. In this study, I adopt definitions of the 'spectacle of violence' and the 'spectacle of absence' that seek to explore the politics of diplomacy behind violent acts that have informed the processes of staging, or hiding, both the methods and outcome of inflicted violence. Geopolitics of the post-human rights legislation era and the Argentine military’s perception of a failed judicial system fostered the institutionalization of a new violent performance, the spectacle of absence, in opposition to the guerrillas' application of the public spectacle of violence. My analysis of violent spectacles within Argentina and their reception at home and abroad displays the various meanings transmitted and received through the medium of political violence as performance.

Aquaculture Development in the 21st Century: A Feasibility Study

VanderLugt, Kyle Richard January 2010 (has links)
Continued growth of the aquaculture industry is needed in the 21st century in response to increasing demand from inflated populations and declining wild fisheries capture. Meeting this demand will require bridging the gap between industrialized countries including the United States, and developing and least developed countries (e.g. Mexico, Uruguay, and Uganda). As the aquaculture industry becomes more globally interconnected, industrialized nations will likely be pressured to develop more sustainable practices which are natural resource conservative while developing countries will be pressured to increase production capacity and develop more intensive operations. Albeit with many inherent challenges, a globalized strategic plan is needed to bridge this gap. This dissertation identifies and discusses several of these inherent challenges. Firstly, potential business models are explored with the concept of how information technology can be utilized to integrate small-scale farms in multi-national agribusiness and also coordinate multi-national supply with global demand. Next, the economic impact of aquaculture development is explored. Economic multiplying models may be utilized to predict where aquaculture development will have the most significant and rapid economic impact on rural communities. Lastly, new systems of aquaculture technology are developed which are resource conservative and also have the potential to be scaled to meet industry needs. Re-circulating integrated agriculture-aquaculture (RIAA) systems combine fish and plant production whereby the nutrient rich aquaculture effluent is utilized to irrigate plants. The advantages and disadvantages of these experiments were discussed. While further research is needed to maximize the benefits of RIAA technology, the results demonstrate that these systems provide both economic and environmental benefits over traditional farming methods. Ultimately, this dissertation explores how novel technology can be implemented in strategic locations to provide a sustainable food supply capable of promoting economic growth through the distribution of seafood products to satisfy domestic and global demand.

Kvinnors upplevelse av livskvalitet efter CABG-operation

Kjellgren, AnnaCarin, Persson, Linn January 2008 (has links)

Pradinio ugdymo mokytojų bendradarbiavimo su mokinių tėvais organizavimas / Organization of co-operation primary education teachers with children parents

Baronienė, Vida 17 June 2004 (has links)
The pedagogical process is a kind of people activities without which society can not exist and develop. If we want the society to be not only educated but also up brought, the parents and teachers have to take part in this process together. Family and school are two institutes which are connected by the subject of upbringing – children. The purposes of upbringing these, two main institutes (family and school) have to be the same because the third “institute” (the yard and street) will be the winner. If we want to solve the problem connected with the upbringing of a child, the active co-operation between school and family is necessary. The efficient co-operation creates mutual reliance. So it is important to know the parent’s opinion about cooperation with the school, how the teachers of primary education organizes the work with the parents. This was the reason why the author wrote this work. The purpose of the work – to analyze the peculiarities of organizing the cooperation between the primary school teachers and the parents. 50 primary education teachers and 100 parents from 5 school took part in the questionnaire. Ten principals from the same schools were interviewed. To know the importance and significance of cooperation between the school and family, the law documents were analyzed, the scientific literature was studied and the questionnaires were used to know the opinion of the teachers, parents and headmasters. When the scientific literature was finished to analyze... [to full text]

Supply Chain Operation Modelling and Automation Using Untimed and Timed State Tree Structures

Izadian, Sina 28 November 2013 (has links)
We study the supervisory control of supply chain operation modelled by (timed) State Tree Structures (STS). We model each agent involved in a supply chain using holons. Three operational models, make-to-order, make-to-stock, and assemble-to-order are considered. A strong assumption on the original STS theory is weakened to allow events shared among agents to be located at different levels. A supervisor is synthesized for the example of a mattress supply chain with make-to-stock operation under certain specifications. Moreover, a new version of the Timed STS framework is developed to allow events to have an upper time bound i.e. deadline. With Timed STS framework, more specifications requiring time measurement can be modeled and a supervisory control is synthesized for the timed model of a supply chain. For a nonempty supervisory synthesis result, the maximum time for the inventory periodic review rate, and the minimum cycle time for customer order satisfaction are achieved.
