Authorities and Conflicts in Kazuo Ishiguro¡¦s An Artist of the Floating WorldDong, Wen-lin 24 July 2012 (has links)
Adopting historical perspectives, this thesis explores domestic, aesthetic, and cultural conflicts in modern Japan surrounding Masuji Ono, the protagonist in Kazuo Ishiguro¡¦s An Artist of the Floating World, as he looks back on his past. His memory narrative reveals his transformation from an iconoclastic young artist to a militarist propagandist in pre-war time, and finally to an old man who comes to terms with the loss of his prestige through none too reliable remembrances. Reading Ono¡¦s narrative in cross reference to historical texts, I argue that his transformation is in step with Japan¡¦s shift from a thriving nation to a militarist empire, and ultimately to a defeated nation subject to the Occupation after World War II and subsequent social changes. These changes are induced by democratization and disarmament engineered by the American army, which drastically undermine Japanese values, including the apotheosis of the Emperor, patriarchy, and social hierarchy. Forced to redefine themselves in the midst of the drastic social transformation, the Japanese harbor mixed feelings toward the emperor, regarding him as a guardian of the nation and a traitor. This ambivalence is profoundly felt by Ono, whose fall parallels the emperor¡¦s, since his authority as a father and a painting master is interrogated by the younger generation, most notably his daughter. In particular, his interaction with his grandson, who is brought up with American values, registers the Japanese attitudes toward the American, considering the occupier as both a welcomed authority and an alien monster. By examining three prominent authority figures in the novel¡Xfather, master, and monster¡Xthis thesis uncovers Ishiguro¡¦s agenda for negotiating an interface between history and personal memory.

Art, Crime, and the Image of the CityKaliner, Matthew Erik 25 February 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the symbolic structure of the metropolis, probing how neutral spaces may be imbued with meaning to become places, and tracing the processes through which the image of the city can come to be - and carry real consequences. The centrality of the image of the city to a broad array of urban research is established by injecting the question of image into two different research areas: crime and real estate in Washington, DC and the spatial structure of grassroots visual art production in Boston, Massachusetts. By pursuing such widely diverging areas of research, I seek to show the essential linkage between art and crime as they related to the image of the city and general urban processes of definition, distinction, and change. And yet, the research pursued here offers a mixed appraisal of strategies that pin urban prospects to image and image manipulation, from the great crime decline of the past two decades to the rise of the creative economy and application of urban branding campaigns. Across the analyses, I highlight tension between expectations of change and the essentially conservative forces of image. Far from rebranding the city, culture is shown to play a key role in locking in inequalities, undermining revitalization efforts, and generally explaining the reproduction and persistence of place over time, following the logic of the "looking glass neighborhood." Thus, culture is not nearly the tool to revalorize, relabel, and transform place so well depicted in studies nor do the buzz of cultural events shape markets and communities as effectively in "offcenter" cities. Place is not fixed for good, and can be "re-accomplished," albeit through decades-long demographic, cultural, and political processes. / Sociology

Įvaizdžio kūrimas, kaip sudėtinė būsimųjų šukuosenų dizainerių, profesinio rengimo dalis / The creation of image as a part of compound future designers of hairstyle and professional trainingČirvinskienė, Inga 24 September 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The theme of the works is chosen not accidentally. Integration and globalization to nowadays artist of image dictate individual requests. Adapting to the Island: the Architectural Reuse of a once active British Naval Facility for BermudaCastro, Jonathan 22 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the possibilities of adaptively reusing an existing site to provide new services and work spaces for the local artistic community within a once heavily used Brit- ish naval ship building and repair station, but now a major centre of tourist activity on the island of Bermuda. This thesis examines how a courtyard and two large stone storehous- es can be refurbished and made useful again rather than torn down. There exists a strong national bias to maintain and preserve the heritage of the place. By understanding both the site’s inherent value, varying levels of design can be proposed that not only transform the site but also bring forward a new sense of place. The adaptive reuse design and the program chosen is a synthetic response to the inherent cultural and historic values of the place, providing spaces that meet needs of the present artist and artisan communities of the Dockyard.

Song for the planet : educator perceptions of an environmental school music programLarder, Elnora 17 January 2011 (has links)
This study examines educators’ perceptions of the environmental impact of Holly
Ar[n]tzen’s Artist Response musicians’ program for schools. In this case study, Ar[n]tzen and
five educators were interviewed about their perceptions of the program’s impact on
students at five B.C. elementary schools. The researcher’s “observational narratives”
also convey experiential examples of the program in action. Educators perceive that the
program provides students and their families with a memorable, nature-focused musical
experience that also enhances their understanding of, and concern for, the environment.
Based on the six participants’ interviews, the researcher argues that programs like this
offer role models for children, enhance community, provide opportunities for crosscurricular
learning, and involve multiple intelligences. The study concludes that, despite
obstacles, the program engages emotions, raises awareness that enhances students’
decision-making skills, and influences the adults in their lives. Participants also perceived
the need for a formal environmental curriculum to be integrated into elementary schools.

GERRIT DOU’S VIOLIN PLAYER: MUSIC AND PAINTING IN THE ARTIST’S STUDIO IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY DUTCH GENRE PAINTINGFinkel, JANA 26 September 2008 (has links)
This study is an examination of Gerrit Dou’s Violin Player (1653, Liechtenstein, Vaduz Castle, Princely Collection). The painting is a visual testimony to Dou’s manual skills and trompe l’oeil manner of painting in his own innovative fijnschilder painting style. The composition incorporates and reinvents devices from a variety of sources from portraiture, genre painting, and emblem literature, such as the arched niche window framing the violinist. The work demonstrates the connection between music and painting in the relationship between the violinist and the background setting of an artist’s workshop. Through an iconographic analysis of works depicting the artist in the studio by Dou and his contemporaries the correlation between music playing and painting becomes evident. In this context, this relationship acts as an important device in fashioning the painter’s image as an elevated and scholarly artist and brings to light the power of music as a mode of inspiration for the painter in the studio. Additionally, tobacco smoking, which appears in many seventeenth-century Dutch self-portraits, in the context of the studio, was also perceived as an inspirational tool for the artist, thus contrasting with smoking in genre scenes of the lower classes as a symbol of waste and idleness. The work, similarly to other Dutch seventeenth-century paintings, is not a realistic representation but a cleverly constructed image that acts as an allegorical master deception for the amusement and entertainment of an educated, upper-class clientele. / Thesis (Master, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2008-09-24 23:56:10.869

Art, culture, and urban revitalization: a case study of The Edge Artist VillageBesner, Barbara 07 April 2010 (has links)
This research explores culture-led regeneration; specifically, how and why small, community-based culture-led regeneration projects potentially affect their respective communities. Methodology is founded on an in-depth case study of The Edge Artist Village in Winnipeg, supported by a literature review, quantitative research examining property values, and archival research. The practicum shows that The Edge Artist Village has had a tremendous impact on the community of North Main Street. While various stakeholders interpreted The Edge‘s impact in different ways, perceptions of safety in the community have improved, and long vacant buildings in the neighbourhood are finding new tenants. This study makes recommendations as to how planners can potentially play a role in encouraging culture-led regeneration projects such as The Edge Artist Village, and suggests ways in which private developers and municipal government can collaborate more effectively to support their communities.
