The Efficacy of Utilizing the Adaptive Behavior Inventory for Children for Educational Planning Purposes

Tiritilli, Wayne E. (Wayne Ernest) 05 1900 (has links)
The study investigated adaptive behavior, as measured by the Adaptive Behavior Inventory for Children (ABIC), in diagnosing mental retardation among elementary school age children who were referred for special education services. Specifically, the study attempted to determine whether or not those children diagnosed as not mentally retarded and denied special education services on the basis of the ABIC data were statistically different, on the variables of intellectual development, academic achievement, and classroom behavior, from those children who were diagnosed mentally retarded and accepted for special education services on the basis of the ABIC data. Further, the study investigated the relationship between adaptive behavior and the prediction of academic achievement in elementary school age children.

Homogeneous and heterogeneous ability grouping in the EFL classroom : A study of teachers' experience and views regarding homogeneous and heterogeneous ability groups / Homogen och heterogen nivågruppering i engelskundervisningen : En studie om lärares upplevelser och perspektiv angående homogena och heterogena nivågrupper

Fritsche, Maria January 2021 (has links)
In this qualitative case-study, EFL teachers’ experience and views regarding homogeneous and heterogeneous ability groups are investigated. Four EFL teachers working in the Introduction program in upper secondary school were interviewed through semi-structured questions. The interviews were held individually and conducted by the researcher. The questions focused on a teacher perspective as well as a student perspective and the teachers were also asked whether they preferred any of the two ability groups and possible reasons for this. The answers were quite similar and the teachers mentioned some common factors, such as time and efficiency, assignments, lectures, student interaction and learning progression. It was clear that the teachers found homogeneous ability groups easier to manage and this was also the group that three of them preferred working with. Additional reasons for this choice was the experience that this type of group was more beneficial for students and the teachers also felt more successful in their roles as teachers. Although one teacher mostly agreed with the others she was more in favour of heterogeneous ability groups, or a mix of both groups, because it allowed students to develop in their own pace and from their individual preferences and she also experienced more satisfaction in finding the right structure and strategies for each student.

Capacity building for curriculum differentiation in the teaching of foundation phase mathematics in Ngwaritsi Circuit, Limpopo Province

Marishane, Matseke Alinah 12 1900 (has links)
This study aims at examining capacity building for Foundation Phase Mathematics teachers in curriculum differentiation in Limpopo Province. Proceeding within the framework of inclusive education, it takes as its point of departure two issues which are collectively critical for learner performance in Mathematics, namely, teacher capacity and differentiated instruction. The study revolves around the view that for improved learner achievement in Mathematics, particularly in lower grades, instructional practices aimed at supporting learners should be differentiated; and, that for this to be possible, teachers should be equipped with the capacity needed to carry out curriculum differentiation. This view emerges from the convergence of three problems which constitute the motivation for conducting this study. The first problem is poor learner achievement in Mathematics in South Africa, which is a subject dominating the public media and scientific discourse. The second problem is a documented general lack among teachers of appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for modification and adaptation of curriculum to the differentiated needs of learners. The last problem is the changing curriculum policy context in which teachers work as represented by the current national curriculum policy taking place against the backdrop of the broader South African education transformation agenda, geared towards inclusion. Underlying these problems is the recognition of curriculum as constituting one of the barriers to inclusive education.Based on an assumption that poor performance of learners in the Foundation Phase Mathematics is due to teachers’ inability to differentiate curriculum and their lack of the necessary capacity, this study adopts a qualitative research design and follows a qualitative approach to examine the problem. Data was collected by means of interviews, observations and document analysis. Twelve Mathematics teachers from three purposively selected schools and one curriculumadvisor from one circuit participated in the study. Data were analysed by means ofBraun and Clarke’s method of thematic analysis. The results present the challenges that Foundation Phase Mathematics teachers face, which include inability to respond to learner diversity and inadequate training in curriculum differentiation. / Inclusive Education / M. Změna třídního klimatu po odchodu žáků na osmiletá gymnázia / The Change of Classroom Climate in Czech Elementary Schools with the Departure of Students into High-Track Schools

Holubová, Markéta January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation is to compare the psychosocial climate of the classes between the 5th and 6th grades of Czech elementary school. In the train of pupils' leaving into the high- tracked schools there are significant organizational changes in the classes of the 6th grade. This theme includes the phenomenon of the early tracking, when some pupils can leave the mainstream of education (elementary school) and start attending the high-tracked schools (multi-year gymnasium). The aim of our study is to contribute to the research, that with the departure of students into high-tracked schools the psychosocial climate in the classes of the 6th grade unequivocally exacerbates. We are also interested in which specific students are accepted into high-tracked schools, and whether they are effective classroom leaders and socio- metric stars. In our study, we also find out the classroom positions of students who are continuously educated in the 5th and 6th grades of the elementary schools and their classmates, who have come as new students into the classes of the 6th grade. In the theoretical section we introduce the foreign and domestic researches which were conducted on the association between tracking and classroom climate. The empirical part inquiries into a detailed analysis of quantitative research...
