Beyond the victim : the traumatic effects of violent crime: an educational psychological perspectiveStansfeld, Fiona Doris 11 1900 (has links)
Violent cnme is among the most prominent distinguishing
characteristics of South African society, it has a severely
traumatising effect on the populations concerned. Based on
research :findings and existing literature, this study explores
traumatic effects of violent crime on the most intimate associate
of the victim (the partner). Accordingly, this study deals with the
much-neglected topic of secondary trauma, by focusing on the
following aspects of or conditions associated with violent crime
and the secondary victim: cognitive, emotional and relational
effects the experience of trauma, loss, vulnerability, depression
and acute stress. It reveals that, depending on the severity of the
incident, its consequences for the partner of the victim may range
from post-traumatic stress to acute stress or secondary traumatic
stress.
From the similar results returned for primary and secondary
victims, it is apparent that in the future, both victim and supporter
should have their needs addressed with equal emphasis. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Specialisation in Guidance and Councelling)

Mental health outcomes and shared experiences of refugee and migrant women following exposure to xenophobic violence: a mixed methods studyWhite, Janine A. 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Disasters are global phenomena, often occurring without warning and with physical and psychological consequences among those affected. In May 2008, refugee and migrants living in South Africa were exposed to xenophobic violence, which may be described as a human caused disaster using the Shultz, Espinel et al. (2008) definition of disaster. Refugee and migrant women were particularly vulnerable during this time due to heightened risk for exposure to violence and pathology. During 2014, a mixed methods convergent study was conducted in Johannesburg to determine the presence of acute stress disorder symptoms (ASD), posttraumatic growth (PTG) and experiences of xenophobic violence among refugee and migrant women. One hundred and three refugee and migrant women completed a selfadministered questionnaire, while semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with a sub-set of 22 women. The quantitative results showed a positive, linear association between moderate ASD-total symptoms, as assessed by the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ) (Cardeña, Classen, Koopman, & Spiegel, 2014) and moderate
posttraumatic growth-total, assessed by the posttraumatic growth inventory (PTGI) (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). All ASD symptom subscales were predictors of posttraumatic growth. The qualitative results from both the SASRQ open-ended responses and semi-structured responses showed that refugee and migrant women were adversely affected by the xenophobic violence, with a prevailing fear that the xenophobic violence would re-occur. There was convergence in the quantitative findings and the qualitative findings for the pathological and adaptive outcomes. Policymakers must address xenophobic violence by working towards prevention of this type of violence. In instances where policies fail to address or prevent xenophobic violence, disaster programmes should consider xenophobic violence in disaster planning. Further to this, mental health intervention programmes should not only focus on alleviating ASD symptoms but also emphasise enhancing PTG. / Psychology / M.A. (SS (Psychology))

Proces směřování k optimálnímu superviznímu systému krizových interventů Policie České republiky / The process of moving towards an optimal supervision system of the crisis interveners of the Police of the Czech RepublicHanzlíčková, Lucie January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis called "The process of moving towards the optimal supervision system of crisis interventions of the Police of the Czech republic" is connected with the future deriving of the project within the structural fund of European Union. The aims of the project is to support, implement and move to optimal supervision for crisis interventions of the Police of the Czech Republic. The thesis is a first research step for initial ideas about supervision and its systematic implementation to individual regional directorates of the Police of the Czech Republic. The theoretical part is focused on the basic concepts in the field of crisis intervention and supervision. The main chapters are supplemented by topics with an overlap into the system of the Police of the Czech Republic. The empirical part was performed using an online questionnaire survey. The research sample was a set of police crisis interventions from all regions of the Czech Republic, where the crisis assistance is provided by the team of the crisis intervention. There are several aims in the diploma thesis. The main one is to map and to describe the current system of supervision of crisis interventions and to compare individual regions in the area of providing supervision. Another aim is to find out various psychosocial aspects such...

Predictors of Major Depressive Disorder following Intensive Care of Chronically Critically Ill PatientsWintermann, Gloria-Beatrice, Rosendahl, Jenny, Weidner, Kerstin, Strauß, Bernhard, Petrowski, Katja 13 December 2018 (has links)
Objective. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common condition following treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Long-term data on MDD in chronically critically ill (CCI) patients are scarce. Hence, the primary aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency and predictors of MDD after intensive care of CCI patients. Materials and Methods. In a prospective cohort study, patients with long-term mechanical ventilation requirements () were assessed with respect to a diagnosis of MDD, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, three and six months after the transfer from acute ICU to post-acute ICU. Sociodemographic, psychological, and clinical risk factors with values ≤ 0.1 were identified in a univariate logistic regression analysis and entered in a multivariable logistic regression model. A mediator analysis was run using the bootstrapping method, testing the mediating effect of perceived helplessness during the ICU stay, between the recalled traumatic experience from the ICU and a post-ICU MDD. Results. 17.6% () of the patients showed a full- or subsyndromal MDD. Perceived helplessness, recalled experiences of a traumatic event from the ICU, symptoms of acute stress disorder, and the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after ICU could be identified as significant predictors of MDD. In a mediator analysis, perceived helplessness could be proved as a mediator. Conclusions. Every fifth CCI patient suffers from MDD up to six months after being discharged from ICU. Particularly, perceived helplessness during the ICU stay seems to mainly affect the long-term evolvement of MDD. CCI patients with symptoms of acute stress disorder/PTSD should also be screened for MDD.

Evaluating the multiple stressor intervention of the South-African Police Service as a trauma management toolVan den Heever, Coenraad Willem 21 August 2014 (has links)
This study examined the validity of the South African Police Service (SAPS) multiple stressor intervention. The multiple stressor was developed for members of their specialised units to address Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Unfortunately, the SAPS multiple stressor intervention lacks scientific evidence to support its possible effectiveness in addressing PTSD. In the current study a deployment and intervention group was compared which employed a pre- test post-test design. The Davidson Trauma Scale and the Revised Impact of Event Scale measured PTSD globally, but also the PTSD dimensions of Intrusion, Avoidance/Numbing, and Hyperarousal. The Wilcoxon signed rank test results indicated that the intervention and deployment was both effective in addressing PTSD although the intervention group revealed the greatest improvement in their overall PTSD scores. The intervention group made significant progress in dealing with all three PTSD symptoms while the deployment group made less progress with their Intrusion and Avoidance/Numbing symptoms, but made significant progress with their Hyperarousal symptoms. The Mann-Whitney u test revealed no significant differences between the post intervention test scores of the two groups, either globally or on the three PTSD dimensions. It appears that deployment was just as effective as the multiple stressor intervention in addressing PTSD. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Furcht und Zittern : eine Untersuchung zur Funktion der akuten Belastungsreaktionen von König Belshazzar in Daniel 5 / Fear and trembling : an investigation into the function of the acute stress reaction of King Belsazar in Daniel 5Neumann, Kai 02 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the narrative concerning King Belshazzar in Daniel 5. Dur-ing a banquet, a hand appears and writes a message on the wall. King Belshazzar’s reaction is one of horror. In the narrative we can find five physical reactions which can be identified as “acute stress reactions”. The question of this dissertation is, why does the author describe these “acute stress reactions” in such an explicit way?
Using the methodology of new literary criticism, it is shown that the five “acute stress reactions” of Belshazzar are a part of a rhetorical stylistic device to denunciate the King.
A broader look at the Book of Daniel shows that although the compressed nature of Belshazzar’s reaction is quite unique, it exists within a wider context which contains many similar “acute stress reactions”. A comprehensive examination of the whole Old Testament canon shows that many books contain descriptions of “acute stress reac-tions”, but none are comparable to the Book of Daniel. It can also be shown that the “acute stress reactions” as such were culturally acceptable but can be used by the author to create a polemic effect.
This dissertation shows that the use of “acute stress reactions” could be employed for various functions according to the intentions of the Old Testament authors. They can be used to characterize a given protagonist and thereby direct the sympathies of the reader. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / M. Th. (Old Testament)
