The research aims to present the story of the Greek hero, Orestes, his transformations and different representations through the history of literature. This trajectory, begins in antiquity with the trilogy Oresteia, 458 BC, composed by the works Agamemnon, Eumenides and Coéforas of the Greek tragic author, Aeschylus; it passes in 1667 through the work Andromaque by Jean Racine – that even ruled by the classical doctrine, gives the characters a new force that inspires the racinian pieces of work -; and it ends with a new interpretation by the light of existentialist philosophy, with the piece of work The Flies written by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre in the twentieth century. The goal of this research was to improve the knowledge of the Greek and French literature; comprising the classic crib where did the tragic story of Orestes, the changes that suffered under the influence of French authors, and their various interpretations during the course of history.

Jack Richardson's theory of historical evolution in The Prodigal

Arns, Célia Maria 31 May 2010 (has links)

'The flower of suffering' : a study of Aeschylus' Oresteia in the light of Presocratic ideas

Scapin, Nuria January 2016 (has links)
My PhD thesis, The Flower of Suffering, offers a philosophical evaluation of Aeschylus' Oresteia in light of Presocratic ideas. By examining several aspects of the tragic trilogy in relation to some of Aeschylus' near-contemporary thinkers, it aims to unravel the overarching theological ideas and the metaphysical and epistemological assumptions underpinning the Oresteia's dramatic narrative. My aim is to bring to relief those aspects of the Oresteia which I believe will benefit from a comparison with some ideas, or modes of thought, which circulated among the Presocratic philosophers. I will explore how reading some of this tragedy's themes in relation to Presocratic debates about theology and cosmic justice may affect and enhance our understanding of the theological ‘tension' and metaphysical assumptions in Aeschylus' work. In particular, it is my contention that Aeschylus' explicit theology, which has been often misinterpreted as a form of theodicy where the justice of heaven is praised and a faith in the rule of the gods is encouraged, is presented in these terms only to create a stronger collision with the painful reality dramatized from a human perspective. By setting these premises, it is my intention to confer on Greek tragedy a prominent position in the history of early Greek philosophical thought. If the exclusion of Presocratic material from debates about tragedy runs the risk of obscuring a thorough understanding of the broader cultural backdrop against which tragedy was born, the opposite is also true. Greek tragedy represents, in its own dramatic language, a fundamental contribution to early philosophical speculation about the divine, human attitudes towards it, indeed, the human place in relation to the cosmic forces which govern the universe.

Comparative perspectives on Persian interactions with Greek sanctuaries during the Greco-Persian Wars

Oppen, Simone Antonia January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation considers Aeschylus’ Persae and portions of Herodotus’ Histories as attempts to shape memories of the Greco-Persian Wars by invocation of material evidence at very different moments in the fifth century BCE. Given the literary and archaeological nature of our surviving Greek evidence, this consideration is a necessary part of the larger project towards which I work: a history of Persian interactions with Greek sanctuaries during the Greco-Persian Wars. Greek archaeological evidence offers one set of comparative perspectives on these interactions. I attempt to place Aeschylus and Herodotus in dialogue with this evidence in chapters two and three. Herodotus, unlike Aeschylus, depicts respectful Achaemenid behavior at Greek sanctuaries during the Greco-Persian Wars. To contextualize this depiction, I examine earlier sources from the western Achaemenid Empire in chapter four. In so doing, I build on methodology demonstrated in the introductory chapter to consider a second set of comparative perspectives. Close reading of Herodotus in parallel to these sources provides a basis for fully examining types of behavior which have often been explained away in previous scholarship on the historian. Notably, Herodotus’ depiction, unlike our surviving earlier sources from the western Achaemenid Empire, often considers how such behavior relates to more violent aspects of conquest, and as such provides a contrast to these surviving earlier sources. I suggest that this contrast—Herodotus’ depiction of both sacrilege and respectful behavior—can be understood in his historical moment. And yet this suggestion is but a beginning.

Καλογεροπούλου, Ελένη 19 April 2010 (has links)
