This Ph.D. dissertation consists of a several points of investigations, with three main areas of inquiry being especially pertinent. The first is a brief review of the presence of Afro-descendent artists in the history of art in Brazil with the intention of both remembering and revealing people of this category. Moreover, I address how the visual arts produced by Afro-descendents were observed, registered, and documented over two decades by researchers, critics, and historians. The second inquiry proposes a reflection over the exportation and adoption of the term “afro-brazilian” from the United States of America to Brazil in the field of visual studies. The adoption of the terminology “afro-brazilian” has resulted in the categorization of work produced by Brazilians artists of afro-descent into a group based on a shared afro-descendent identity. Furthermore, “afro-brazilian” has been further used for the purposes of labeling thematic research, concepts, aesthetics and/or poetics surrounding the questions related to the history of the afro-descent population. Lastly, the third seeks to present and analyze the production of Brazilian and United States afro-descendent artists who demonstrate interest in creating works which visualize and dialogue with circumstances of the African diaspora or, simply, with their African roots. The presentation and analysis of these works were completed chronologically, with particular attention placed on observing the biographies, themes, and research interests of the selected artists. In this way, I have comprised a body of afro-descendent artists who, due to their related interests and artistic practice, construct an art genre of afro-Brazilians, afro-Americans, or even, African diasporic artists.

Lipski, John M. 25 September 2017 (has links)
-- The present work offers an ethnolinguistic study of three Afro-Paraguayan communities: Emboscada (founded in the 18th century by free blacks), and Camba Cua and Laurelty (founded in the 19th century byfree black soldiers who arrived with the Uruguayan general José Gervasio Artigas). The data confirm the existence of linguistic structures that link Afro-Paraguayans with other Afro-descendent communities, such as the Chota Valley (Ecuador), the Yungas (Bolivia), Sama-Las Yaras (Peru), Chocó (Colombia), and Helvécia (Brazil). Among the principal traits are invariant plurals with a single plural marker (las persona, los militar), verbs invariant for person and number, and lack of feminine gender concord (loh mujere, algún comida).

Discrimination, Social Exclusion and Vulnerability of the Garífuna Women in Guatemala; An Exploratory Study on Underlying Causes

Mulongoy, Melissa 21 January 2013 (has links)
The Garífuna are the smallest ethnic minority group in Guatemala, living primarily in the city of Livingston (known as Labuga, Wadimalu in Garífuna) located along the Caribbean coastline. Their unique history, ethnicity and culture has allowed them to preserve their way of life for centuries on the one hand but has also separated them from mainstream Guatemalan society on the other hand. The afro-descendent Garífuna community forms a small part of the overall indigenous group in Guatemala alongside the Maya and the Xinca groups; however unlike the larger indigenous groups and the remaining non-indigenous population, the Garífuna are ignored and are not included in the groups in need of development assistance for education, health, employment and security. The exclusion is even more pronounced for Garífuna women. This study was conducted to understand the reasons for the discrimination, socio-economic exclusion and vulnerability of Garífuna women within the Guatemalan society, what is currently being done to address the challenges and barriers Garífuna women are facing, and what further changes need to take place to bring about a transformation in their situation.

It was based on the whole institution named prison. The present research seeks to investigate the religion in two penitentiaries of the paulista metropolitan area. Taking into account the declarations of incarcerated women, it intends to investigate how afro-descendent women (imprisoned), choose certain religions. The dissertation theoretically verified and the situation of the afro-descendent women was confirmed in the field of study. Regarding religions in this context, the study discusses what religion means to these women, how they opt, practice and participate in one on the provided carcerary space, and what the meaning of the chosen religion is in prison s daily life.

The present work proposes a historical and social view on the life and work of the poet north rio grandense Auta de Souza (1876-1901). It seeks new insights into her critical fortune and the discussions surrounding the Afro-descendant poet and her rise as a professional writer in the nineteenth century. The research is justified by the necessity of insertion of the poetry of Rio Grande do Norte in the academic and literary circles in the attempt of a revision of the canon with regard to the poets who remain on the sidelines. In order to walk the way of construction of the research, bibliographical sources were used that arose at the time when she was still alive and those that are made today. It was tried to show the excellence of her unique book Horto, published with the endorsement of Olavo Bilac. It is intended to bring some lights on the eighteenthcentury poet identified with a poetry spiritual and melancholy. For that, the studies of the theorists Frantz Fanon and Edouard Glissant were important for the knowledge of the racial and whitening issues that involve the poet. On the other hand, the theory of Maurice Blanchot and his studies on death brought a better understanding of death in its several aspects, the main theme of Horto's poetry.

Carvalho, Ana Paula Comin de January 2008 (has links)
This work has as its subject the social acknowledgment of the difference in Brazil related to afro-descendent population. The problematization of such question is made from the analysis of the public policies of land regularization of quilombolas territories and the patrimonialization of cultural goods related to this social segment, aiming to understand how works the acknowledgment of afro-descendents difference in these social processes and to think about the participation of anthropologists in these situations. This way, we aim to explore the subtleties of this phenomenon, its impacts over the groups that are its objects and the reactions it causes on the public realm. The research universe in this work is composed by the territorial acknowledgment processes in the lasting community at quilombo Família Silva, in Porto Alegre, and the cultural acknowledgment of Cerro dos Porongos, in Pinheiro Machado, both counties at Rio Grande do Sul State. The comparative analysis of the processes leads us to believe that the culture is still the place par excellence reserved to the subject of afro-descendent population in our country, what means to say, the espace of difference.
